2008 Round 3 AFL Wrapup

Posted on 07 April 2008 by

What a rival weekend it was! It was a flash back to yesteryear with high scoring and big hits in the games which is what all fans want to see.

Cox, Jedda and Bassett are the big name injuries which will hurt their teams chances this year.Western Bulldogs defeated St Kilda by 38 points

At quarter time it looked all over but Bulldogs has surprised everyone (including me) and now sit third undefeated. The Adelaide imports have added a real edge in the ruck and up forward which was their weakness.

St Kilda were disappointing, they looked awesome for a quarter with their three big dinosaurs up forward. Last week people were suggesting that their forward line is too top heavy, after watching the game, I agree! So whats the solution? Either drop Gehrig or move Riewoldt down back to strengthen up their weakness – the backline.

Hawthorn defeated Kangaroos by 16 points

Kangaroos were good for half a game but against these new Hawks, you cannot play half a game. Hawks are looking ominous and imo are the only team that could challenge Geelong this year. Hawks do need to be careful of their discipline with suspensions as that can really de-rail any team.

Fremantle defeated West Coast by 14 points

Power forwards win games, perfect example is Mathew Palvichs in the 2nd quarter when he kicked three consecutive goals and Fremantle won by that margin. Fremantle have injected youth (Schammer and Palmer) and dumped the old farts and they out runned the Eagles.

West Coast are officially rebuilding now especially with their key players all playing poorly. Big worry is Dean Coxs foot injury as he is easily the one shinning light.

Sydney defeated Brisbane by 17 points

Sydney have a huge advantage over Brisbane and its all mental. Bradshaw kicking 5 goals would be a shinning light for Brisbane to help Brown kick a winning score but apart from that Brisbane have been disappointing so far.

Sydney tipped to struggle are flying by being fourth at the end of round 3 with a great percentage (141.20%).

Mathew Kreuzer had a big debut dominating the ruckEssendon defeated Carlton by 16 points

40 odd goals being scored is a rarity in the modern game of spare men and flooding. Mathew Kreuzer looked great for his first game, he dominated the ruck and Carlton are looking a lot better but still have no wins.

Essendon like last year have found ways to win the close games which is important. It is good to Mathew Lloyd kicking goals after bad injury luck.

Geelong defeated Melbourne by 30 points

Many tipped Geelong to win by 100+ points but Melbourne surprised by getting within a kick to the premiers in the 3rd quarter. Still however their lack of skill and bad decisions meant they gave the game away. Tom Hawkins looked good and I think the Cats actually gained with Nathan Ablett walking.

Collingwood defeated Richmond by 44 points

Richmond are back! They were terrible against Collingwood and im sure that its good to see that somethings do NOT change in the AFL.

Adelaide defeated Port Adelaide by 6 points

Bam, Smack! All of it was fair but boy it was great to see them smashing up each other. Adelaide won a great game but will their injuries hurt them in the up and coming weeks. Port Adelaide are probably the most disappointing so far this year, winless and second last on the ladder.
