Sorry about the delay in getting the wrapup up, over the weekend we ran into a few issues with holidays, sickness & the website down for a period of time.

Ryder v Kreuzer battle in the back was one of the highlights & Ryder won the battle of the young ruckmen

Ryder v Kreuzer battle in the back was one of the highlights & Ryder won the battle of the young ruckmen

Essendon defeated Carlton by 69 points

This promised to be a classic game and with both teams wanting to stay in the top 8 along with 80 odd thousand fans turning up. For the first half while nothing spectacular it was close but that did not last as Essendon kicked 16 of the last 18 goals of the match to storm away.

Carlton would be worried, we all know about their “They know We Are Coming” slogan for the start of the year but the question remains, where are they going? Carlton seem to loose these important 8 point games and that would worry every Blues fan.

Collingwood defeated Fremante by 84 points

Pavlichs injury in the first half really hurt the Dockers and without him, they would always struggle and after sticking close for 3 quarters Collingwood kicked 10 goals in the final quarter. It was a dirty day for the Dockers with debutants Clarke & Ballantyne quite and several sore bodies and niggling injuries.

The 84 point win would be a nice percentage booster for the Pies along with Medhurst coming back and Cloke finding form with 3 goals.

Adelaide defeated Sydney by 16 points

Sydney came out of the blocks very quick and dominated the clearances and played their game style while Adelaide where bottled up and could not score freely. However the 3rd quarter was a different story as they where then able to play their free scoring game plan to be even after being 25 points down.

Hall in his 250th game had yet another brain snap and was reported for another strike to Bocks head. Surely its time to get rid of him..

Brisbane defeated Melbourne by 55 points

Melbourne like Richmond where held goaless for 2 quarters while the Lions midfield dominated and supplied the Lions forward line with sublime disposal and Brown, Bradshaw & Polkinghorne all benefited from it.

Apart from Slyvia, Davey & Morton Melbourne had no winners around the ground. Again Watts was kept quite and his form would continue to worry the Demons coaches.

The Hawks where soft and for them to get back into the top 8 they need to toughen up

The Hawks where soft and for them to get back into the top 8 they need to toughen up.

West Coast defeated Hawthorn by 20 points

This game will be remembered for Nit Nat’s 2nd games fourth quarter where after a quite first 3 quarters he basically won the game for the Eagles as the Hawks tried to keep in the game.

There where many promising signs for the Eagles as they tackled hard, protected each other and even with the Hawks getting a few soft free kicks and gifted two goals by the interchange and rushed behind rules.

The Hawks will be worried as they just cannot seem to get back into gear even with an almost ful strength side to choose from.

Bulldogs defeated North Melbourne by 22 points

North where always with a chance as they had the inspiration of a new coach in Crocker and if they kicked straight, they well could have. They had 3 more shots at goals but with a 3 goal 5 behind 3rd quarter they just could not put the Dogs under enough pressure.

Dog coach Eade was not happy with his sides performance but a wins a win and to keep up with St Kilda & Geelong they need to win as many games as possible. Even when not playing well.

Geelong defeated Port Adelaide by 34 points

Gary Ablett (36 possessions), Paul Chapman (33) and Joel Corey (34) were the chief architects through the middle as Geelong set up a match-winning lead at three-quarter time before easing up.

That margin flattered the visitors who trailed by 63 points at three-quarter time before adding the first four goals of a final term in which the Geelong players’ heads appeared elsewhere. That will worry coach Thomson as they have their hardest match coming next.

St Kilda defeated Richmond by 56 points

St Kilda where held goaless for the first quarter and Richmond played a very good game plan with backing up eachother, good kicking and some good forward line play by Riewoldt. However after the first quarter St Kilda woke up and Richmond went back to their Wallace’s days with poor kicking and where held scoreless until the last quarter.

Hudghtons new injury will be a worry for the Saints going into the Geelong match

Hudghtons new injury will be a worry for the Saints going into the Geelong match

While St Kilda won by nearly 10 goals it was far from an excellent win and they would want to play more consistent against Geelong in round 14.

Top 8 After Round 13

  1. St Kilda
  2. Geelong
  3. Western Bulldogs
  4. Collingwood
  5. Brisbane
  6. Adelaide
  7. Essendon
  8. Carlton

Round 13 Talking Points

Please give us your thoughts in the comments section below or add your own round 12 talking points. The questions will asked in bold and my response will be un-bold under them.

Your input and comments help us make Kick2Kick a better website..

  1. Are Carlton the biggest disapointment of the year or would Richmond still keep that title?
    • I think Richmond still is but Carlton could not be far behind especially if on their current form they only just scrap into the top 8.
  2. How much will Freo stuggle if Pavlich cannot get fit?
    • Pavlich imo is one of the reasons why Sandilands is getting more of a notice and thats due to Pavlich able to provide muscle to win clearances. No concidence that Collingwood dominated the midfield after his injury.
  3. What is the problem with Hawthorn? Is it a case of toughness, turnovers or the fact the players are not working hard enough?
    • Personally when your smashed and out muscled by the young Eagles it is a worry and I have already talked about their lack of hard work. Think Hodge is wrong when he says its due to their turnovers (they where rated number 1 up to round 13 in effective disposals).
  4. Is it time Hodge plays in the midfield instead of the backline?
    • Yes he had to play their in the Grand Final but the midfield needs a spark and Hodge needs to provide that. He was recruited as a midfielder and needs to stop playing free in the backline.
  5. How impressed where you with Nit Nats last quarter?
    • For a second game in his AFL career it was good, he will only improve in consistency as time goes on.
  6. Both Geelong and St Kilda had indifferent games, is this a worry or are they just saving themselves for the round 14 match?
    • Think not much of a worry but lets just hope the over hyped game does not become a flop.
  7. Will Barry Hall get suspended and is it time Sydney takes a stand against his ill disclipine?
    • I just cannot understand how they got rid of Davis yet they continually keep Hall on the list.
