I do not know about you but I love wet football and to many including me the Port, Richmond game was a classic. Alot of the bottom four struggling sides tried hard but the classier side ended up winning.

Fremantle are showing more than at the start of the year but still a little way from a top 8 side

Fremantle are showing more promise than at the start of the year but still a little way from a top 8 side

Again sorry about the delay in getting this wrap up published. My computer again is in hostipal and i am on a hired laptop.

Hawthorn defeated Fremantle by 22 points

Fremantle where riding high after 3 wins and many tipped them to defeat a Hawthorn team that was injury ridden and had many question marks on them. Like for the last 15 odd years Fremantle again chocked on the big stage and performed a weak effort. Not even a “put on your superman cap & be proud wharfies” chant by Pav could get them over the line.

Buddy was the difference and while he was probably beaten by reborned Tarrent, he ended up kicking 4 goals where no other key forward could get more than 2. Freo had their chances but simple posters and goal misses ended that.

Bulldogs defeated Melbourne by 7 points

The Demons are coming and after a few good efforts against West Coast & Geelong where they have actually lead at various times, they lead for over 1/2 of the game against the Dogs. It was the brilliance of Aker who helped the Dogs over come their demons.

The Bulldogs are 5 wins and 3 losses yet are still playing fairly average footy. The injury to Murphy will hurt them but hopefully Hille, Aker  & Johnson can lift to cover him missing.

Geelong defeated Kangaroos by 70 points

Skilled Stadium must be the last real home ground for any club (including Subi, AAMI etc) as most teams seam to give up on the bus ride over to the game. The Roos left out a host of players who I bet would have played in any other game.

The result? A quick 5 goals lead before the Roos even got a goal after some early misses by Hale who simply must lift. One stat which is simply amazing and should be a blue print for other sides is that 13 of their 18 goals came from the corridor. Why do clubs play around the boundary?

Kennedy & Lynch look promising with their best games of the year

Sydney defeated West Coast by 5 points

Another close game between these two rivals, even without Kerr & Hunter. The Eagles where always with a chance. Sydney had a 2-3 goal lead for most of the game but the Eagles always stayed within touch.

The Eagles even managed to snatch the lead with 6 minutes to go until a few silly skill errors saw the Eagles give back the lead. Promising signs for both sides as Hall found form (5 goals) and Kennedy & Cockie continued to show promise.

Brisbane defeated Adelaide by 36 points

While they are 5-3, I am sure Voss is far than happy with again giving the opposition a lead (Adelaide, Richmond & Geelong) and it took a 3 goal flurry in the last 5 minutes of the 2nd term for them to get back into the game.

Bradshaw then kicked 4 in the 3rd quarter and it was all over as Adelaide continue to lack a real goal kicker. The turning point of the game was when Goodwin on purpose slowed the game down late in the 2nd quarter and they stuffed it up.

Port Adelaide defeated Richmond by 3 points

Ahhh wet weather football, its a pleasure to watch and imo it brings out the best in footballers. Tredrea & Nahas shinned & a great last quarter with heroic play and game saving goals & marks made this a game to remember.

Again Port kicked 18 behinds and while they did not loss this game, surely they will need a few extra hours in front of goals this week.

Carlton defeated Collingwood by 51 points

Yes Collingwood had injuries but 3 goals in 3 quarters of football is a joke. Its not like they had any chances, as up to half time Carlton only had 2 more scoring chances than them. Malthouse wont be happy…

To me this was a poor game with both teams playing boring and uninspired football. Betts 4 goals & Waite 3 goals filled the gap as Fev again failed to fire. If he is injured, surely he must be rested.

Murphy & the Blues came back into form & easily defeated a effortless Collingwood

St Kilda defeated Essendon by 19 points

Besides a 5 to 2 goal first quarter this game was even with that early 3 goal lead being the winning margin. Essendon had guts and surely they could be a smoky for finals this year, while again they have the win, then lose pattern, this weekend had more heart than their last losses.

St Kilda did enough to win & the continued form of Kosi & Riewoldt up forward (7 goals between them) makes them look very dangerous.

Round Eight Talking Points

Please give us your thoughts in the comments section below or add your own round 8 talking points. The questions will asked in bold and my response will be un-bolded under them.

  1. Has the dome ruined wet weather football?
    • Yes, Footballers do not know how to play the wet game anymore. Teams like Essendon & St Kilda suffer more as they play more at the Dome.
  2. Running the clock down. Adelaide & West Coast both did it and lost the game. Is it the young side or is it the Football Gods teaching us to play exciting football?
    • If only it was the case that football Gods could do that. While its a smart tactic if used properly otherwise its just looks dumb if you stuff it up.
  3. Does the 5 wins – 3 losses flatter the Lions & Bulldogs?
    • Yes, none of the teams have done much to say they are top 4 sides but the sign of a good side is that they win even when not playing well.
  4. Why do teams ‘roll over’ and play dead (rest players etc) when play certain teams at certain venues (ie: Geelong at Skilled
    • Coach Laidley said that Rawlings would have played if playing in a final etc. I think giving a player a week off can help keep them fresh (especially senior players) but is it a good trend?

This year is surely an interesting one.

Carlton have not delivered like expected, Collingwood are rubbish, the Bulldogs have slipped once again, the Hawks are playing average, and Richmond needed alot more than Ben Cousins to save them.

    Heres what should happen,

Fevola should be rested for Carlton. he has the ability to reall inspire Carlton when he plays well…when he doesn’t he also has the ability to damage them.
Wallace should be sacked! and the Tigers need a cleanout. drop the over rated players and bleed young fresh talent. and get back to basics…their skills are rubbish and need work
The Bulldogs need to bring one or two of their recruited forwards into their team. to fill the void left by Murphy and to at least add some marking and goal kicking power up forward, without it they may struggle yet again.
Malthouse to be sacked! he is dead weight. Collingwood are a nothing team playing on nothing but pride. Rocca should go as well.

on the subject of the round…one thing i find very interesting…is that more often than not, two teams who aren’t doing the greatest and probably won’t have much of a finals impact, can produce a stellar game. The Eagles and Swans produced yet another spectacle for fans. however don’t get too confident…i doubt either team will really have any chance at all of a grand final. good game, but not a revival

One other very touchy subject in sport atm, is again referees/umpires. honestly they are damaging the game. both AFL and NRL.
An NRL commentator pointed out a very intersesting point a few weeks ago, there is a difference in knowing the rules of the game, and understanding how the game works. so many poor decisons are made just because umpires do not understand aspects of the game. only players and ex-players really truly understand football and it frustrates every fan to know that umpires are so blind, oblivious and really just plain stupid.

I wonder just how much Fevs injury concerns are really bothering him…

Agree that the Dogs need to start playing their young forwards, they will develop quicker playing the regular season than VFL and the Pre Season. Poor coaching by Eade imo, trying to save his job…

I totally agree about this, the thing is though no ex-player wants to become an umpire. Interesting that Cricket and other sports have a higher success rate of ex-players umpiring. Maybe its got something to do with the respect shown…

    Thanks SunCity_Royal..
