Carlton defeated West Coast by 41 points
This game was never going to be a contest as Carlton looks for a top 8 spot while the Eagles look to rebuild & it showed. Eagles have a bad habit of playing clubs and teams into form and after a goaless 60 minutes last week, Carlton got a quick start and opened up a 3 goal lead 5 minutes in.
Judd & Fev looked in better form this week and the inclusions of Garlet, Fisher & Houlihan all were important but the test is if they can continue to improve as Waite is out for the year.
LeCras continued to show his class and the Eagles looked ok in patches but they really need some pace in the midfield to help break the game open.

Jared Brennan & Clarke while back up ruckman won the Ruck contests against the Roos
Brisbane defeated Kangaroos by 18 points
Two games in two weeks at the Dome for the Lions and although they only defeated the Roos, they have won quite a lot of fans. What is the best thing was that Brisbane kicked 15 goals yet only 3 goals was from Brown and Bradshaw. Down the other end the Roos struggled with again Hale playing rubbish football with 6 possesions for the whole game. Warren looked good and I think he has a future.
Hooper & Proud two young players that Lions has stuck with showed why and if they can continue to show pace and forward pressure, the risk will pay off. The Roos have 4 hard games ahead of him and I don not expect them to win many more this year.
Bulldogs defeated Sydney by 40 points
13 unanswered goals in the first half saw the Dogs put the Que in the rack for an easy win. Sydney did out score them in the last half with 10 goals to 6 goals but the game was over.
When Aker, Griffen & Gilbee are quite Higgins, Cooney & Giansiracusa step up along with Welsh’s best game of the year (4 goals). Hall was good with 6 along with Goodes (30 possesions & 2 goals) but again it was the old players who lifted. Where are the young guns?
Richmond defeated Fremantle by 3 points
This was an enjoyable game to watch not due to the skills or the work effort but rather the effort both teams showed. Richmond’s 8 goals to 3 3rd quarter helped them set up a lead which they managed to hold onto. Delido, Cousins & Polo where their best.

Trent Cotchin & Ben Cousins finally get something to sing about
No one can fault Schammer’s desire to play the game but his two poor kicks in the last quarter did not helped and what is the go with Harveys poor coaching by keeping Sandilands up forward when he was so diminate in the ruck contests? No wonder Freo are struggling…
St Kilda defeated Melbourne by 37 points
Again Melbourne tried hard but they simply lack the quality with their young players making crucial skill errors at important times. In the first half they sticked to the Saints and then in the second half they only scored 2 behinds.
While St Kilda won, a few worries in that Gardiner will be missing for a few weeks after his silly elbow to Jarmars head and Riewoldts almost comical goal kicking exploits. Maybe he was showing the Gold Coast that they are not missing out..
Adelaide defeated Hawthorn by 27 points
This was one of those 8 point games that Adelaide needed to win to keep their top 8 chances alive and for the Hawks, if they won they could sneak into the top 4. Adelaide restricted the Hawks to just four majors in the first half and generated 12 of their own (on way to highest score of year).
The Hawks on the back of Rioli (four goals), Sewell (31 disposals), Lewis (31) and Muston (26) managed to get back into the game with a 4 goal to 0 goals 3rd quarter but it was all over.
For the Crows Scott Thompson (38 disposals), David Mackay (26) and Michael Doughty (25 and two goals) were all instrumental in the midfield. Along with Walker (five goals) & Knights (four goals) & Bock and Rutten beating Franklin and Roughead.
Geelong defeated Essendon by 54 points
This game was a real test for the Bombers who where going to test themselves against the Cats. It looked promising early with Corey missing his first game in 50 odd matches & kicking the first goal in under a minute. However even with Harley doing a hammy and Talyor struggling with an ankle, it was a canter for the Cats.
In defense to Essendon, they where 80 odd points behind in the 3rd quarter yet unlike many other teams they stuck to their game and managed to out score the Cats in the last quarter. S Johnson & Mooney (10 between them) & J Selwood (37, 2 goals) & Ablett (30, 2 goals) where brilliant.
Collingwood vs Port Power by 38 points
Malthouse has coached his team brilliantly the last few weeks and he is one true survivor. He had brought his side from a bottom 8 spot to knocking on the top 4 from major injury worries & an almost black out through the Port game. This was another 8 point game and it was again Port who through in different form choked, yet again.
Swan continues to prove me wrong about his quality as a player with 48 possessions as his team kicked 11 goals to 4 in the second half to run away from the Power who never really had any real targets up forward with D Motlop & C Cornes injured.

Round Ten Talking Points

Ben gives the bird & has been asked to explain. He will loose a few sympathetic fans from that action.
Please give us your thoughts in the comments section below or add your own round 10 talking points. The questions will asked in bold and my response will be un-bolded under them.
Your input and comments help us make Kick2Kick a better website..
- What is your view of Cousins ‘Birdy’ sign at the TV?
- Yes he should be given a please explain but I think this is a perfect opportunity for Richmond to take a stand on their culture issues and suspend him for a week. It would set a nice standard.
- Could Riewoldt be as good as Carey if he could kick a ball straight?
- Yes he could. A premiership will also help but his kicking at goals is imo stopping him becoming a real star. His kicking against Melbourne was beyond a joke.
- Coach Wallace retiring as coach after the Friday night game, is it the right call?
- Personally Yes I think so (Read my thoughts). Although quitting after the Freo win could have meant he could go up to Broome. Nice place to retire too.
- Do you think the Magpies medical staff are kicking themselves after saying no to trade Stevie Johnson due to his ankle?
- Yes and I guess clubs just do not like taking risks at trade and drafts. The reason why Joel Selwood was over looked due to his knee issues that year.
- How will the injuries to Bellchambers, Harley, Williams, White, Headland, Milne & Corey effect their teams?
- Corey is abig loose along with Harley as they add so much structure to Geelong. However I think Bellchambers could be the biggest lost with Hille already out along with Laycock needing more time off with his foot. Bet they wished you could have a “mid season draft”.
- Apart from Geelong & ST Kilda would this be one of the most even years yet with 9 teams within 4 points within each other?
- Yes but I think most of these 9 teams have no chance, including the Dogs…

So one question…
The tigers finally win a game, and wallace quits? forgive me if im mistaken (im not sure if he quit before or after the win)
Everyone rated the tigers this year. I didnt, when asked the headline after round 12 i replied Wallace sacked! now people can argue that he “quit” and in a way he did. but the Tigers still wanted him gone. I knew the moment the tigers hired him 5 years ago that he would not be a good match for the club. cast your minds back to 2002. Wallace ended a career with the bulldogs and failed to win a premiership. he had the team to do it, but it couldn’t be acheived, and when they started to struggle he LEFT them in their time of need. Wallace is an old school, outdated coach who is no Leigh Matthews or Kevin Sheedy. Richmond is better off without him, and so is the AFL. lets hope he STAYS away this time!!!

Jermayn, I haven’t seen the game on TV, but the Cats stopped to a walk after ¾-time — not because they were tired or bored, they just didn’t need to do any more. If they play like this in September, no-one will get close.
Cousins furore is, again, hyperventilating over nothing.
Carey is so far ahead of Riewoldt, it’s just not funny. Like, lightyears!!!
Agree on the Bellchambers effect. The best backup now will be Cale Hooker who has been playing really well in defence. Bombers will still give a yelp, but I’m expecting they’ll miss the eight by some margin now.

Does it not bring complacency into a team when the club just packs up after 3/4 time? Is this not what happened with them last year?
But do you not agree that if he could kick straight, it would make him more of a star? You almost do not mind Riewoldt having a shot at goal because he is less than a 50% chance of missing. All that hard work he does is just ruined…
Problem with Hooker playing ruck is that like you said he has played very well down back. Fletcher is due back soon but I am sure Knights would rather Hooker played back. Hurley is also out yet again which is not a good sign. Essendon sure pick the injury prone big men!

Yes, complacency is a potential issue. I didn’t feel they were complacent on Sunday. There was a real hunger for the contest while it was hot, and a desire to make a statement to the competition. I don’t see them making the same mistake(s) in September as last year. It’ll take a very, very good team at the absolute best on the day to beat the Cats.
On Riewoldt, frankly I don’t rate him as more than a good athlete. He has odd games where he looks like a footballer, but more where he doesn’t. Same for Koschitzke. Carey, on the other hand, was almost the complete footballer, and without doubt the best I’ve seen in my time, daylight second.
The Windy Hill injury curse rolls on. If the Bombers ever get their notionally best 22 on the park together for an extended period, they could go places.

Agree that Carey was the ‘complete footballer’ – no argument there! But I think Riewoldt is more than just an athlete…

“Yes but I think most of these 9 teams have no chance, including the Dogs…”
It’s funny how you dangle the Dogs out there almost like bait on a hook, well I ain’t biting Mr. One thing I will say though is that I think it is absolutely RIDICULOUS to write off any teams at the halfway point of the season. It’s like all you halfwits out there who think that Gary Ablett should be given the Brownlow now, so much can happen in one week let alone half a season.

Cousins is a bit silly for giving the birdy to the fans that thought he was great in Perth. Alot of them thought that he was still great until he pulled the birdy… the only thing I think he should be pulling – is ‘himself into line’. Hes not doing much for winning fans at the moment other than new richmond fans
