2009 All-Australian Sneak Peak – What you think?

Posted on 15 June 2009 by

Looked into my RSS feed this morning and was surprised to see a sneak peak of the All Australian team so far this year. No list of 40 players but rather a full list of 22 players.

From the article hosted on Foxsports they listed a few interesting points & along with my own:

  • Eddie’s whine in 2007 was given fore thought with 3 players in the 22 (and two others in the 40)
  • Pavlich & Buddy missing.
  • Taggers in St Kildas Jones, Ling & A Selwood included in the 40.
  • Sandilands preffered as first choice ruckman over Cox.
  • Tarrent & Prestigiacomo included down back in the starting 22.
  • Roili the only Hawks player (but is currently injured and will probably miss out now).
  • No players from Port, Adelaide & or Brisbane in the starting 22.
  • Koschitzke at full forward with only 27 goals with Fevola, Brown, Bradshaw, Roughead, Tredrea & Buddy having kicked more than him.
  • Aker in the forward pocket in possibly his last year of senior AFL.
  • Sam Fisher at CHB? Does he even play there for his own side?

The All Australian Team from round 12

B: Simon Prestigiacomo (Collingwood), Matthew Scarlet (Geelong), Chris Tarrant (Fremantle)
HB: Corey Enright (Geelong), Sam Fisher (St Kilda), Brendon Goodard (St Kilda)
C: Adam Goodes (Sydney), Joel Selwood (Geelong), Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)
HF: Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn), Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda), Steve Johnson (Geelong)
F: Jason Akermanis (Western Bulldogs), Justin Koschitzke (St Kilda), Paul Chapman (Geelong)
Foll: Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle), Chris Judd (Carlton), Gary Ablett Jnr (Geelong)
I/C: Dean Cox (West Coast), Leigh Montagna (St Kilda), Leon Davis (Collingwood), Adam Selwood (West Coast)

So what do you think?

So in looking at the team above, St Kilda have 5 players in the 22, Geelong have 6. Collingwood have three & West Coast have two along with Fremantle.

Do you think Swan the leading disposal gatherer in the AFL not being in the 22 is a harsh call? And what about Pavlich? Is his selfish football finally catching up with him?

Interesting not seeing any Brisbane players in the list even with them currently in the top four and having Brown & Brenean both having steller consistent years.

Is Cox lucky to be in the starting 22 along with A Selwood? Or did the youtube DreamTeam video help give the selectors sympothany when they picked Joel?

Let us know your thoughts, about who got in and was lucky and who missed out.

No way Prestigiacomo should be there. Cox and A. Selwood also lucky. I’d put Jolly or Ryder in over Cox on current form, and if there’s not a better defensive midfielder in the competition than Adam Selwood then I’m a pocket watch.

Sad to see a complete absence of Tigers but I can’t see anyone even challenging for a spot in the 40 at the moment. Perhaps Daniel Jackson as a tagger but that’s a stretch even for someone as one-eyed as me.

    Jermayn Reply:

Agree that Presti is lucky, think we got in due to his stingy defensive pressure. Something like 11 goals by his opponents, which is pretty impressive, however I do agree with AussieRulesBlog that Lake would have been a good choice.

@Geoff – I think Jackson has had a better year than A Selwood (as much as I like him), think his disposals are more damanging and he is better at restricting his oposite player.

As much as Jollys year has been good, I still think Cox has been better. Hear are their stats for the year.
    Goals: Jolly (12) Cox (8)
Hit Outs: Cox (332) Jolly (329)
    Marks: Cox (71) Jolly (45)
    Tackles: Jolly (33) Cox (22)
    Disposals: Cox (273) Jolly (135)
    Inside 50m: Cox (36) Jolly (24)
    Clearances: Cox (47) Jolly (26)

Personally I think Aker as a forward pocket is a big surprise. Surely Motlop, LeCras, Higgins have had better years..

  2. aussierulesblog Says:

Hmmm. I guess it depends what you want from footy whether Presti gets a guernsey. For me, he’s too negative. I’d prefer Lake and he’s having a pretty reasonable year. Other than that, not too many quibbles with the starting 18 (not a “starting” 22, Jermayn). Jolly for Cox and Cross for Selwood for me on the bench.

The Swan non-selection (in this list at least) falls into the same category as Presti in a way — what you think footy is about. Pure numbers of possessions isn’t critical in my view, but how you use them is. There are better users of the ball than Swan. EOS.

I wouldn’t have thought that Brown is having a stellar year. Good perhaps. I think you’ll have been the first, Jermayn, to put the words Brennan and consistent in the same sentence with a positive spin!

No Bombers either, but that’s hardly a surprise. I think Ryder has done a very good job to pinch hit, but certainly not AA quality in my view.

To be honest i think this is stupid. Fox sports “claim” that a viable source gave this to them…why would the afl release information like this? and do you guys actually beleive that this would be the all australian team if it were picked tomorrow…

i think its rubbish and Fox are just trying to get some publicity.
some of those guys should not be there, and there a guys who definately should be who aren’t. dont pay too much attention to this i reckon

  4. Jermayn Says:

If you read the article it was the Herald who originally got the team and Fox copied what their source said (and then I wrote it down hear).

Even though their are some players that have question marks on them (Presti, Fisher, Kosi, Cox, Tarrent, Aker & A Selwood) they have all had good years so far, so the list would not be too far off.

  5. SunCity_Royal Says:

ok the herald sun, i stand corrected, but seriously, “they forgot to clean the whiteboard” and someone wrote it down, and gave it to the media? that sounds stupid in itself to be honest.
i think of the players you just named, kosi and fisher probably deserve to be there, aker im not sure, selwood and tarrant i dont think so, neither should presti, cox probably
but i reckon a few players should have been picked above the forementioned.
again i question the integretiy of this source and i think its not to be taken too seriously…

  6. SunCity_Royal Says:

and i also think people have severly underestimated daniel giansiracusa and dale morris this year…they have both been playing extrememly well, but because they’re not really flashy players they dont get noticed…

  7. deano Says:

adam selwood over Swan and Boyd, i think not…

    Jermayn Reply:

    Boyd??? Who is that?? :P

  8. Uncy Herb Says:

Cox on the bench? What a lot of crap. He’s been average at best and is there because someone remembers what he ‘was’ like. Ryder and Jolly are a better performing ruckmen than Cox at the moment.

Sure, Cox is getting a lot of taps, and a lot of possessions. But Kosi is picked at FF not because he has the best stats, but because (hopefully) the selectors think he’s a better player despite the fact he’s kicked fewer goals.

Cox has has the second most amount of taps, and a load more possessions than any other ruckman. But he’s also had far more uncontested possessions than any other ruck. His UP to CP ratio is about 3:2. Sandilands is about 2:3, while Ryder and Jolly are at 3:4 and 9:8 respectively. The stats suggest that Cox is picking up a lot of ‘cheap’ stats around the ground. But even though he’s picking up more cheap disposals than any other ruckman, his effective disposal % is the fourth worst out of the top 25 ruckmen in the AFL.

Another stat I find interesting for ruckmen also one-percenters. Cox’s 1%’ers: 16 for the year so far. Ryder has 30 – almost double, and Jolly also has more with 19.

If this was a ‘real’ team, there is no doubt in my mind I’d want Sandilands and Ryder as my one-two rucking team. If you’ve got someone on the ground for 25%-50% of the time who is not a massive unit, then Ryder is a much better pinch-hit ruckman than Cox is right now.

    Jermayn Reply:

Some good stats there Uncy Herb!
I think the issue with any All Australian team, is that you choose the best for the position. ie: you choose the best performing full forward (which is not not Kosi) & you pick the best two performing ruckmen over the course of the year and to me the best four in no order are: Jolly, Cox, McIntosh & Sandilands.

The reason I would leave Paddy out (I am a fan of his) is because he has not played the majority of the season in the ruck. By the end of the year, yes you would most likely include him but at the moment, personally I would not.

Also on while the subject. What are the stats that we should look at for a Ruckmen? Contested vs Uncontested? Ruck taps? Clearances (team or individual)? Marks? Goals? Effective taps?

  9. craig eyles Says:

What the hell would FoxSports know?? Should just stick to the rugby league.
Kosi at full forward is the biggest joke of them all.

  10. aussierulesblog Says:

What are the stats that we should look at for a Ruckmen?

There have to be two categories: Ruck; and Around-the-ground.

In the ruck, a successful ruckman has to be creating opportunities for his team. If he’s getting his hand to the ball, but the opposition ‘read’ him and take it away, he’s not doing his job. If he gets his hand to the ball, but his ‘tap’ consists of dropping the ball on someone’s chest in the middle of a roiling pack, he’s not doing his job — Ryder does this a lot.

Also in the ruck, and I’m not sure how you measure this, you want your ruckman to make space for the midfielders to operate in, as well as create clearances of his own.

Around the ground, marks, effective kicks/handballs (ie, not into trouble).

Now, everyone’s extolling Sandilands’ virtues. At his height and bulk, he should have midfielders taking weeks off with bruised chests, but I rarely see this when I watch Freo (not often). Perhaps it’s a quality midfield that makes a ruckman look good?
    .-= aussierulesblog´s last blog ..Please explain! =-.

  11. Jermayn Says:

I think your right that a good midfield helps out the ruckmen. Look at the Hawks and Geelong last year, apart from Ottens (at times) the other 3 ruckman suck but with the dominate midfield they where able to get away with it.

Sandilands has ‘improved’ alot this year with the emergence of Halseby, Palmer (before injured) and Pavlich playing midfield who can actually ‘rove’ the ball to effective use. Think this is also why Cox does not seem as dominate as the WCE midfield is rebuilding at the moment.

@Josh – if you read the original article, it was a suppose ‘sneak peak’ of the All Australian team. I agree that the team has limitations and hopefully will not be the real team.

As we agree that the team is not a true reflection, we have published an article where we can add our own team and then next week, we will publish ours.

I have edited your swearing but kept the same point your trying to make.
    Thanks for your comment.

Most “contraversial” to Pie supporters is the rumour Swan didn’t make the “cut” from a squad of 40 in the All-Australian midfield.
Gotta be honest, I couldn’t fit him into my Finals DreamTeam.

Well he did only get chosen in the forward line and not the midfield where he plays his football.
