It started early this year with clubs already doing deals and talking to other clubs/ players before the trade ‘meat market’ week starts officially on October 5th 2009. Some have tipped that the 2009 trade week will be a big week with up to 20 trades taking place.

Shaun Burgoyne looks likely to be going to Hawthorn via the 09 Trade Week
This is because the Gold Coast has already picked the best 17 year olds, this years draft is thin past pick 20 and seeing next year the Gold Coast has the best picks. Clubs will look at current players to fix the holes in their playing list, so expect a lot of #20 – #40 picks to be swapped.
We will list every club with the players being talked about and what likely club they will go to and what their cost will be. If you have heard different or we have left off a player, please add them in the comments section below.
The Clubs and the Players Rumoured to be traded
We will not be including silly rumours that have been thrown up that wont happen. ie: Brian Lake who will stay with the Dogs. On October 5th, we will daily update the Kick2Kick 2009 Trade Week post with the updates on trades and rumours.
Adelaide Crows
Do not expect them to be take place in any trades.
Brisbane Lions
Brisbane will most likely get a few players to their club (Lovett, Staker & Raines) and may use some current list members like these below to get them.
- Bradd Dalziell – Looks likely to be returning to WA, WCE will use Brent Saker for him while Fremantle may have to use a draft pick for him.
- Jamie Charman – Brisbane have a few ruckman (Clark & Leunberger) and he could used as bait for draft picks.
Carlton Blues
Are looking for defenders and another forward option and have already looked to have traded pick 11 for Brock McLean from Melbourne.
- Brendon Fevola – I doubt he will be moved on, you just do not give up 90+ goals a year Coleman medalist’s.
- Andrew Walker – Just signed a new contract and will only be used if needed to be.
- Brad Fisher – Has the ability to be the mid sized forward that some clubs need ie: St Kilda
Collingwood Magpies
Have not been big traders since Malthouse has been at the helm and I doubt it will change this year.
Essendon Bombers
Expect to use these players as choices for getting more draft picks as coach Knights looks to build from the ground up.
- Andrew Lovett – Looks likely to go to Brisbane but expect Sydney to also be interested.
- Leroy Jetta – Was over looked in the final by Quinn and may go home, ie to West Coast.
Fremantle Dockers
The Tarrant talk wont happen and expect the Dockers to get rid of a few passengers for 3rd round + picks. The only player they will be interested in would be Bradd Dalziell.

Bradd Dalziell a ball magnet looks likely to be returning home either to Fremantle or West Coast
- Marcus Drum – Has been a flop of a number 10 draft pick and expect a pick between 30-40 to be swapped for him. Could go to Carlton, Geelong or Hawthorn.
- Brett Peake – Needs a new environment but wont expect much for him in return.
Geelong Cats
Chance to offload a few fringe players for draft picks and relive salary cap pressure.
- Mark Blake – Blake, Mumford and West are both out of contract and Blake‘s rants and lack of mobility may be tiring a few at the Cattery.
- Kane Tenace – Expect him to be traded for a 30-40 pick and go down the Brent Prismall path.
- Ryan Gamble – Behind Johnson & Chapman and has the ability to get interest from clubs after a mid sized X-factor forward.
- Matthew Stokes – Getting some interest from West Coast and out of contract.
Hawthorn Hawks
Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson are likely names to be at the Hawks next year, so expect the Hawks to off load quite a few high draft picks and the following players to get some picks back.
- Mitchell Thorp – Number 6 is an unlucky pick with several pick 6′s not performing (him, Dowler & Bradley). Will not get anything below a #30 pick for him.
- Mark Williams – Has talent and a native of WA, Eagles are after a quality mid sized forward.
- Josh Kennedy – Famous name but wants more game time that may see him at Sydney for a 30 odd pick.
- Ben McGlynn – Had his best year to date but could be the player that they give to Port plus #9 for Burgoyne.
Melbourne Demons
Will be happy if they can swap McLean for pick 11 (4 in the first 20), will see them build up on more young talent.
- Brock McLean – Almost a done deal, think it will be a win – win in favour of Melbourne imo.
North Melbourne Kangaroos
The Roos do not want to get rid of Gibson and will offer him up for a pick between 20-30 and maybe a player. Besides Gibson do not expect much from the Roos as their playing list is slim.
- Daniel Harris - An in tight and under player but Swallow‘s break out year may seem him at a new club
- Corey Jones – Was in favour with stand in coach Crocker, if not could be at St Kilda for a low pick.
- Josh Gibson – No Scarlett but a handy defender that could help the Hawks. Expect #25 for him.
Port Adelaide
Will likely bait a few players for trade picks as they look to clean out the player list but expect only a few to get interest, these are:
- Shaun Burgoyne - Will likely go to Hawthorn for pick 9 and a player.
- Brett Ebert - Mid sized forward who can kick goals and could be of interest to several clubs.
Richmond Tigers
Richmond have no depth in their list and anyone that may get interest will only get picks above 40 and with a slim draft may not be worth the hassle.
- Jordan McMahon – Talk is that St Kilda are interested but I cannot see why.
- Shane Tuck – Again more talk that clubs are interested but wont get more than a #40 pick for him.
- Nathan Brown – Sydney and maybe maybe St Kilda who are looking for extra forward options.
- Andrew Raines – Brisbane have offered their 3rd pick for him.
St Kilda Saints
I do not expect the Saints to be big players, may look at a N Brown or McKinley as a third mid sized forward option and could do with some pace.
- Luke Ball – Has been asked to take a pay cut (which is fair enough) and will only be traded if he asks for it. Unlikely to go.
- Matt Maguire - Stranded on 99 games and only 23, will be worth a 20-30 pick. Reportedly is interested in Essendon or Hawthorn.
Sydney Swans
Will trade Hall to the Dogs but unlikely to go for Fevola as all the talk is currently. Also looking at Seaby for a 20-35 pick and Josh Kennedy. Will keep their first round pick though.
- Barry Hall – Will try and get a draft pick or two and a bit player from the Dogs for him.
West Coast Eagles
Have a few players ‘wanting out’, Seaby is a definite along with Spangher most likely but the rest will only be given if the right deal is made. The Eagles need pacey fast midfielders and forwards and could look at Leroy Jetta, Mark Williams, Stokes or a Stack from the Dogs.
- Ashley Hansen – Would not give him up for anything less than a #30 pick.
- Brent Staker – Looks likely to be a straight swap for Dalziell but see the Eagles try and get a pick as well for Staker.
- Mark Seaby – One of the ‘done deals already’ with a reported 3 year contract with Sydney. Expect nothing less than a #30 pick.
- Matt Spangher – Had a breakout second half of the 09 season which will inflate his price, will only be traded for a top 20-30 pick, like Staker.
Western Bulldogs
Will get Hall but must please Sydney who will allow him to go but will want more than a pick higher than #30.
- Andreas Everitt – Carlton interested but with their pick 9 already swapped, think he will stay at the Dogs.
- Cameron Wight - Could be one of the players swapped to keep Sydney happy.
- Brennan Stack - The Eagles want a quick clazy forward.

Brennan Stack WTF, kicked 4 goals in his second AFL game- don’t trade him please.

To be honest , I do not think he will get traded but he is someone the Eagles may be looking at along with others in Stokes, Williams etc.

i think you will find that either everitt or eagleton will be moved on, given everitt has 10 years ahead of him i would be disappointed if eagleton played on and halted andrejs’ progression for another year, he has been a terrific servant but i think it is time for the bald eagle to hang up the boots, agree with bob, stack isn’t going anywhere and i think either wight or skipper(maybe both) will be used in the Hall trade…
Interesting to see that a lot of the blokes that were talked about last year, robbo, hall, hansen, staker, seaby etc, are up for trade this year. i honestly don’t know why teams hang on to these guys so long. the dogs would have given up maybe a 2nd round pick for hansen last year, now he is one year older has hardly played this year and i wouldn’t offer up a fifth rounder for him. as was written earlier in the year, teams really need to smarten up their trading, if the player won’t be there for your next tilt at a flag, move them on…

Some good points Deano, think from an Eagles pov, Hansen was held onto as they were unsure if Kennedy would take that next step up and take over the CHF position that the Eagles can build a side around. Also M Brown showed enough playing forward and back after a knee reconstruction along with Wilkes, Spangher and Macenzie down back which have moved ahead of Staker and Hansen.
I doubt the Eagles will do a straight swap Dalziell for Staker, see them push for a draft pick as well. Maybe Eagles: Staker and 4th round for Brisbane: Dalziell and 3rd round. Also Port Adelaide have shown some interest in Hansen…
Is Stack out of contract? and isnt Skipper and Wight already delisted?
October 4th, 2009 at 11:39 am
they have been told that if they can’t be found new homes then they will be delisted, not sure about Stacks contract situation but i would assume that he would be a required player and i doubt the eagles would be willing to offer up much for a bloke who has played a handful of games but given his potential the dogs would want at least a 2nd rounder…don’t think it will happen.
interesting to see jolly wants back to melbourne and i also read today that spangher and nicoski are close to signing deals with the eagles, i would have thought both would be moved on??
October 5th, 2009 at 8:34 am
I think there is more chance the Eagles will go after Stokes with a draft pick they get from Sydney or Brisbane for Staker and Seaby…
Jolly has been linked to go back to Melbourne for the last few years, think he just wants a contract extension
No one would trade for Nicoski and the Eagles will need him now seeing Wirra has retired.
