2010 Round 13 Wrapup pt2

Posted on 28 June 2010 by

What a boring weekend, I am so not in favour of these split weekends where we only have two games a weekend, ohthat is right Adelaide and Melbourne played didn’t they?

Jack Steven had a blistering third quarter with three goals that set his team alight.

St Kilda defeated Geelong by 24 points

When was the last time Geelong went a half of a quarter without kicking a goal? Well the answer is 2001…

Geelongs forward line looked flimsy as Mooney and jPod floundered in the wet and besides Varcoe looking dangerous in the second the rest of the forward line struggled with Johnson more worried about wrestling with Steven Baker.

Jack Steven on the other hand came alive and with Schneider (who kicked 4 goals), Milne and Riewoldt who looks ready to come back soon and the forward line is starting to look dangerous.

This game however was all about the midfield battle which saw Ling go to Hayes who almost took the game away from the Cats in the Grand Final last year. While Selwood was brilliant with 34 disposals and 12 clearances the difference was the St Kilda players who played their part while some of the Cats players struggled.

Collingwood defeated Sydney by 25 points

Another reason why there should be more than just the three games on the split round with two of this weekends games being duds, this was the first.

The first quarter was tight after some more inaccurate goal kicking from Collingwood and it saw Paul Roos loosing his cool for one of the first times in public. The second would have done nothing better for his cool as he sat on the bench as Collingwood kicked four goals (and another bucket load of behinds) and opened up a handy 25 point lead at half time.

The second half was neither here or there and Sydney managed to keep in touch with Collingwood. Bradshaw was a late withdraw which put the attention on Goodes to be their main key forward target and not for the first time he failed with 0 goals and only managing 8 kicks and 3 marks. Kirk, Kennedy, McVeigh and Mattner all got plenty of the ball but apart from O’Keefe they struggled to kick a goal.

Chris Dawes continues to shine this year as he kicked three and his body work was good to watch. For the Magpies, the usual suspects of Swan, Didak, Thomas and Pendlebury all had plenty of the ball. Davis continues to flounder after his breakout year in 2009 and surely he must be struggling to keep his spot in the best 22.

Adelaide by Melbourne by 44 points

Melbourne had a chance to make the finals? Seriously give me a break…

A win is a win and it may be the win that will keep them away from the Wooden Spoon and may even save Craig looking for a new job. Adelaide had a great start to the game with four goals while the Dees could only manage one. Adelaide had good three quarters but Craig would not be happy with Melbourne getting back into the game with a five goal to one third quarter. Bad boys Vince and Jaensch had good games back after club imposed suspensions while Tippett kicked four for the winners.

Melbourne really struggled for the first half and where lucky not to loose by more to a higher quality opponent. Bate and Green continue to be the only descent forwards for Demons and they are really struggling to kick a winning score.

Round 13 pt2 Talking points

  1. Will Steven Baker or Johnson get suspended for one of their whack-a-thons?
    • Shouldn’t Steven Johnson be awarded something for whacking Steven Baker in the face?
  2. What did you do on the weekend with no football?
    • To be honest it was a quiet weekend with me only getting through a game and a half with the games apart from Friday night being of a poor standard.
  3. Is the St Kilda win a good thing for the AFL season?
    • Totally good for the competition, shows Geelong aint bullet point as they now battle out of form and injured players. Loosing Steven Johnson will be a big loss.
  4. Do you agree with Geelongs captain Ling with the umpires picking on him for holding onto his opponents?
    • Is he on drugs? Its taggers like him that clog the game up, not the umpires who pick on him for holding his opponents at stoppages and contests.
