Although only 12 teams played this weekend it was probably one of the most intense round of games we have seen this weekend with comebacks, tight games, big hits by players, stingrays and trams, and the first official interchange stuff up by St Kilda.
Hawthorn defeated West Coast by 57 points

John Worsfold is happy with a 60 point loss? Now that is unacceptable imo! Yes the Hawks are probably a 10 goal better side but should you be happy? No way! It is good to see someone in the Eagles camp who has put the club on notice. Expect Seaby, Staker, Graham, Rosa and a few others on the trade table. Question is would your club want any of them? Staker to Sydney?
Hawks while they would be happy to be in the top 3 with only two losses, they would not be happy with several injuries concerns with Crawford, Dew and Lewis and not to mention Buddy who is looking likely he will lose the plot sooner than later.
Carlton defeated Richmond by 30 points
Richmond drew a line in the sand for this game and then forgot to step over the line and fell asleep and allowed Carlton to out run them in the second half. What makes this win even more magnificent for Carlton was that Judd did not play and they still managed to win. They are fit and full of confidence and they remain a smoky for the top eight with Kangaroos and Brisbane playing shaky football.

Every football fan’s thoughts are with Graham Polak at the moment, who is from the same town as I originally came from, while he recovers from his coma.
St Kilda defeated Kangaroos by 25 points
West Coast was the first team to be docked by the new interchange rule however St Kilda had the first ‘correct’ interchange offense on the weekend and it almost could have been the biggest news of the weekend when the goal put Kangaroos back in front. However what is not normally associated with St Kilda they showed grit and determination and managed to win the game.
Bulldogs defeated Port Adelaide by 54 points
Aker pulled the handstand out again after being told to keep it to himself. Bulldogs are officially on the top of the ladder for 7 days until next weekend when Geelong play. At the moment everything is going the Bulldogs way and lets hope for their sake that the fingers of Griffen and Welsh will recover after a week off. What is even better for the Bulldogs is that their skipper Johnson is hitting some form after a poor start of the year.

The one highlight for Port Adelaide was Rodan’s rushed point of the year when he snapped beautifully a kick through the goals from the pocket. However after starting to celebrate, he realised that he was in the back pocket and not the forward pocket
Melbourne defeated Brisbane by 1point
Brisbane has kissed their top 6 chances goodbye after a poor run of form with a poor game against Bulldogs a few weeks ago and a poor loss against cellar dwellers Melbourne who are now challenging West Coast for the number one draft pick in the National Draft.
Brisbane while has the best key position player in Jonathon Brown is a lot like Buddy Franklin in the fact that they miss easy shots for goal. Gary Ablett, Dunstell, Lockett and Carey etc did not miss and for Brown and Buddy to be mentioned in the same breathe, they need to kick goals and not points.
Essendon defeated Fremantle by 4 points
Again the same thing applied to Pavlich, while he kicked 6 goals including 3 in the last quarter, it should have been 4 with his miss when the scores were drawn. Essendon and Fremantle both played brave with key injuries to several players (Hayden, Fletcher, Crowley etc) but Essendons pace of Jedda, Lovett etc was the difference along with the fact that Essendon are only carrying Pevrill while Fremantle were carrying several players in Dunn, Carr and Bell on the weekend.

A couple of things…first off i dont think staker will get traded from the Eagles, in my view he has had a good year. compared to last year he has really stepped up the anti, and although of late he’s been a bit down he’s much improved and the Eagles would be silly to trade him.
HOW GOOD ARE THE DOGGIES?!?!?! on top of the ladder at the moment, and nobody expected them to be where they are this year after a shocker last year.
interesting to note that Port Adelaide beat the Dogs in hard ball gets/contested possessions, yet the dogs still blew them out of the water…it shows to me that they are not limited to one game style and can adapt if need me…the sign of a true premiership contender.
also even though i still think Malthouse is a complaining baby…i do think that the idea of having two players on standby to come into the game to replace a damaged player is a good idea. the pace of the game is far faster than it was twenty, even ten years ago and i do think the interchange needs to be assessed. i think a 6 man bench or the idea i just mentioned would be ideal. because the people losing out are the teams. Freo had one player on the bench for a half of footy…now the thing that worries me, is that with 19 players forced to do a 22 man workload, it increases the risk of further and worse injuries

Extra people on the bench on stand by? If this is the case you would get ‘fake’ injuries just so they can play a fresh player.
scenerio one: Starts to rain so a tall player ‘fakes’ an injury so you can play a smaller guy.
scenerio two: Have one ruckman in reserve and then once he plays his heart out. You swap him so he will be able to provide some good ruck work in the final quarter.
It just has too much gray areas for my likeing. Leave it as it is imo

I agree with you on the extended bench and injures. Thats why I say that if we bring in an extended bench, it has to be open for any use not just injures.

It will also only fasten the game and imo AFL does not need to be any faster…

Yeah, too some degree. I suggested changing it to 3 on the bench and 3 emergencies. Personally leave it as is, but if you do change it, don’t have the injury part.

The problem is that no matter how many you add on the interchange bench or how many you have in ‘reserve’ you will still have the same problem. The fact that injuries happen…
I do not see how having ‘reserves’ yet keeping it fair (not just for injuries) changes the problem? The interchange bench used to be none then one, two and then four, these changes were brought in for the same exact problem and guess what? The problem is still hear. Adding ‘reserves’ will not solve the problem.

Yeah to a degree but the game evolves and now if you are 22 vs 20 in the first half, it give the 22 a huge advantage!

BUT it does not mean that they will ALWAYS win.
Hawthorn were down several players against the Eagles but still won by 60 points. The weekend before Essendon were down a player from 10 minutes into the 1st quarter and yet still won by 30 points.

Very true but it doesn’t help either.
