AFL 2008 round 16 wrapup

Posted on 21 July 2008 by Jermayn

At the start of this round I would thought I would have been talking about the Geelong v Bulldogs game but that was a flop with the Dogs disapointing but rather all the talk is the Saints and the so  called ‘underarm’ tactics of Joel Bowden rushing behinds to waste time.

Kangaroos defeated Collingwood by 18 points

What was good about this game was that while B Harvey stared for the Roos, so did their younger lesser types like Pratt, Thomas, Campbell and Wells playing the best game I have seen him play. If they want to play finals these young players need to grow up and play like this every week.

Collingwood are they the real deal? They beat top four teams like Geelong and Sydney and then loose to Carlton and the Roos twice. Heath Shaw would be close to be either dropped or switched away from the backline, would be worth to see if he can play rather than just picking up easy possessions.

Geelong defeated Bulldogs by 61 points

What a flop of a game this was, all week the Dogs were talked up especially with the injuries of Ablett and Ling and then the Geelong side warmed up and out scored the Dogs by 10 goals in the 2nd half. The news gets better with 3rd teir players picking up the slack with Stokes, Gambel and Varcoo all playing good footy and Ling and Ablett may be back this week.

IMO it brings up the question I have raised and asked all year about the Dogs about their lack of tall forwards and when final type pressure is on can they kick a winning score? I stand by my point that they will NOT win a Grand Final until they answer this problem.

Richmond defeated Essendon by 4 points

Did Bowden bring the game into disrupt? NO he did NOT, get a life, what a silly comment. Bowden has his knockers but one thing can be said of him. He knows the rules and that fact won his team Richmond the game. Where the rules needs to be changed is beyond the point. He would have still done it if it was changed to 3 points.

Brisbane defeated West Coast by 46 points

West Coast has played Brisbane back into some form after some bad looses to Essendon and Melbourne. Brisbane will always remain a threat with twin towers up forward in Bradshaw and Brown who will become fitter. Their midfield has heaps of foot soilders in Harding, Delziel (awesome first game) etc.

The Eagles are playing really bad with no confidence, no game plan and no leadership. Cox imo should become a co-captain with Glass and they need to stop playing dead weights like Braun, Fletcher, Staker etc.

St Kilda defeated Hawthorn by 30 points

WOW! 30 odd points down at half time and turn it on to outscore them by 10 goals. Maybe the last few weeks will quite the knockers as their coach has really turned this club into a team which is something I have NEVER NEVER seen before.

Hawks have some problems with injuries and niggles on star players and then there is their backline. Yes their forward line is awesome but the attention needs to be put on their leaky backline. They will not get far into the finals as Croad and co are not key realible defenders.

Sydney defeated Carlton by 2 points

Carlton while will not make the finals this year is a team to watch (if they can keep Fev - but no more of that) with their heap of first round draft picks players (Walker, Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Kruzer etc) improving and playing good footy.

Fevs contract saga has left a sour taste in everyones mouth including Fev.

Sydney is the luckiest team this year with some ‘get out of goal’ wins over Carlton, West Coast, Draw with the Roos etc which is the reason why they are now a game and a half from 5th spot. I hope they do not bring Hall back into the side with injuries to O’Loughlin and Barry.

Port Adelaide defeated Adelaide by 12 points

Port won the bragging rights and Adelaide now has the oppurtunity to think about next year after dropping out of the eight for the first time this year. Neil Craig will really earn his money now to try and keep the team into finals contention but will loose more ground to teams like Richmond and Carlton which is probably beneficial so they can get a good kid in this years draft.

Fremantle defeated Melbourne by 46 points

Yawn! This twilight stuff does not work especially in WA. Fremantle woke up after quarter time and then easily defeated Melbourne.  Freo has found another future player in O’Brian and Schammer might have saved his career. I wonder how Warnock felt playing against his future club? and did Melbourne give up after half time so they could get the number one draft pick? Naitanui would be worth it!
