Not many of us saw this including all the so called AFL experts
In looking at the big AFL news today it was Nathan Buckley accepting the Collingwood assistant coaching position for the next two years and then taking over as coach with Malthouse becoming the club’s director of coaching in 2012.
Some saw this happening when he went cold on the North job but most including the “AFL Experts” & “Couch Experts” thought otherwise.
The biggest so called experts including “the biggest news breaker in AFL” Craig Hutchinson & “AFLs first lady” Caroline Wilson all got this wrong, you look through the old footage on the “AFL Footy Show” & “Football Classified” (which I enjoy watching both) they all was adamant that Nathan Buckley would not accept the Collingwood job & Malthouse would not want to tutor his replacement, continuously looking over his shoulder.
Guess this goes to show that as far as experts go, they know nothing…
and let me take this time to say that we at Kick2Kick are far from experts as well. We are just die hard football fans who have played, watched and screemed at the tv & umpires countless times, hence making us “couch experts“.
Note: It is far to say that the Channel Nine shows where not the only payed AFL experts who got it wrong.

While this is a big story, i think that on the east coast of australia and especially in queensland the story that has shocked both the afl and nrl world came to a head today
RUGBY LEAGUE STAR KARMICHAEL HUNT LEAVES NRL AND SIGNS WITH AFL CLUB GOLD COAST.
all i can say is…wow! for anyone who knows anything about rugby league or is a supporter of, Hunt is possibly one of the best league players going around at the moment, he is state of origin winner, and has played for australia many times. this is shocking and amazing at the same time. is the beginning of a major coup? could this be possibly the most interesting plot point in the football code rivalry in australia…if this is a one off then no more will come of this, but will this open the door to more nrl players leaving for australias favorite game? personally im excited to see hunt pull on an AFL jumper and play the greatest game in australia.

I do think your onto something Mike!
This article is more a humouress look at how us AFL & Couch experts really do not know a thing. Guess it also shows that these same people did not know about this major switch from Rugby to AFL.
In looking at the articles etc, He has had a history in the game and he is not the first player to switch (Ray Smith, who played 104 matches (77 with Essendon from 1971-75 and 27 with Melbourne from 1975-76)) or even the first recent rugby player to think about it. A few years ago there was another in the Australian team who actually trained with Port Adelaide in the off season.
I do think we will see more of this especially with the pay and national coverage differences.

Mike, maybe an article/ insight from a rugby state what this means…
July 29th, 2009 at 9:50 am
well the 3 articles i read also state that players like greg inglis, billy slater and israel folau have been tipped to be big targets by the afl as well…(and again for anyone who follows rugby legaue, these three players are arguably the best in the nrl in their position) below is the link from the nrl website
http://www.nrl.com/newsviews/latestnews/newsarticle/tabid/10874/newsid/56061/karmichael-hunt-to-leave-broncos-nrl/default.aspx
i think it will be an interesting time with the nrl being hit by scandal after scandal and the interest in the game starting to fade somewhat. its no doubt that afl is fast becoming more popular in queensland, and i beleive with the addition of west sydney, its very likely we could see a few more afl teams from north of victoria within the next 20 years

It’s worth remembering that the likes of Sheahan, Wilson and Hutchison actually get paid to present opinions on these matters, even if they’re based on the flimsiest of evidence.
It’s more newsworthy when they get something right! And we give them oxygen by commenting!

I like it when they and us get it wrong, shows that we know nothing and we can still be surprised (like the NRL Hunt story).
