On the weekend while staying at a hotel for Valetine’s day I was watching the NBA Three Point competition on Foxtel and while I am no fan of Basketball, it was thrilling and exciting watching these guys throw ball after ball at the ring to see who is the best.
It got me thinking on why could we not see this idea transformed into the AFL?
The competition could either be held on Grand Final day instead or alongside the half time 100m sprint. Personally the sprint is a bit over rated and a non event. It would be good to see something interesting and this to me would be exciting.
How the Competition Would be Ran
- Five stations with 5 balls on each station
- The stations would be:
- Two sides next to goal posts
- Two at a 45 degree angle 40m out
- One directly in front 40m out
- Like the NAB three point competition, you would have a time limit of around 5 minutes (more if needed).
I would like to watch players like Llyod, Fev, Anthony, Aker and other crack shots have a go at this.
What the Australian Basketball do with their three point competition which could be included in the AFL goal kicking competition is to allow non-AFL players a chance to defeat AFL players. I know off one guy who defeated NBL players at the three point and won himself $10,000.
Your input & Ideas
What do you think? Would you like to see the AFL do this? If so give us your thoughts etc and if you have better ideas or other rules, suggestions please add them in the comments or if you are a twitter fan, add them using the #aflfooty hash tag.

Interesting concept. 40m is too close. AT LEAST 50m. There aren’t many players in 2009 who can’t have a decent crack from 50m. Of the current players, I’d back Fevola to win this (from 50+).

Yes maybe you are right that 50m would be better for the 45 degree angle and directly in front shot. What about the boundary shot? I reckon at least 20m…
As much as I like the idea of a West vs East/ State of Origin etc, I think these games are gone. No one cares enough about State pride anymore, it died with Teddy Whitten snr.
Think an extravaganza that show cases all the skills is a great idea (what I was getting at with original post). A similar handball competition to the Nines Sunday Football Show could also work. Also a Dacos kick along the ground for goals would be another that could be fun.
Any other ideas?

whether you like basketball or not, the nba do a lot of things right. i have thought for a while that the AFL should hold a mid year weekend long celebration of our great game. what better way for the competition to break into the northern states then by holding an extravaganza that show cases all skills involved in footy. the goal kicking is a great one, you could even have a high flying marking competition similar to the NBA’s slam dunk comp. i like the 100 m sprint and perhaps even a celebrity match, followed by the Grand Finale an East v West match compulsory to all available players.

in our current format we do not have a match that puts the best 22 against the next best 22. i don’t care how they do it i would just like to see the best 44 players in the country go head to head. every other sport has the best vs the best, i would like to see it in our sport too..

State of Origin died as a viable concept when the national competition began using a national draft to recruit players. When the VFL raped the SANFL and WAFL for their best players, the Croweaters and Sandgropers had good reason to want to kick a Vic. State of Origin was dead before Ted was (no disrespect to Ted’s enthusiastic promotion).
Much harder to thread one from 50 on the boundary than to bend one through from the behind post — far greater margin for error.

Sorry Deano but I do not think we will ever see a proper State Of Origin series again, imo the Hall of Fame was a flop and the Big V (and other jumpers) just does not hold anything to anyone now. They even renamed the TJ Whitten medal last year…
So you think if we were still using the zones etc we would likely have State of Origin? I like the National Draft and if it means the end of Origin, so be it. Only a few (like Deano) actually miss it.
I agree its harder but I like the idea of showing off the snap and banana kicks and on the boundary 50m out is to close of the 45 degree kicks..

Forget state of origin, as i said i do not care what form it is in i just want to see the best 44 players on the same park. it frustrates me that we do not get to see the highest quality of football. every other team sport has a higher level of play except ours. what about a match that sees the public vote similar to the NBA all star concept, full forward with the highest votes plays on the full back with the highest votes etc, tell me you blokes wouldn’t pay to see, frankin v scarlett, judd v ablett, s.johnson v morris, cooney v bartel, fevola v rutten, the possibilities are endless. there would be no tagging, no flooding, no jumper pride, just 44 blokes putting their reputations on the line as the best at what they do. i don’t miss state of origin, i just miss that next level of football…

Do not get me wrong Deano, I would love to see these match ups and the best verses the best but at the moment there simply is not enough time for extra matches. The only way I see it is if we do something similar as the Rugby where you have the players playing for several competitions.
- Super 14s teams = 16 AFL clubs: play 15 rounds (play once each)
- Tri Nations = Best vs the Best: best 44 players playing against each other.
With having 22 round, plus split rounds, nab pre season comps you cannot fit in a State of origin or a best vs the best game. Something has to give…

scrap the nab cup, no one gives a toss about it anyway, including coaches. play the all star game mid year and have the week off for all teams the week after that. would like to see a first and second year players vs third and fourth year players match too.

I do not think anyone would disagree with you hear deano except the AFL which unfortunately are the ones that count.
