AFL/ Australian Football jargon explained pt1

Australian football has so many different words and expressions to explain the facets of the game. Below are a selected number of footy jargon words. If some are missed, add them in the comments.

When the ball has gone to the ground after a contest and a player picks them up off the ground. Example: Second video on How to Ruck.

Screemer

A great mark which usually consists of the player taking the mark being on the shoulders of someone. Example: Left image.

Closeline

When someone has given you a big bump front on and you almost have your head ripped off.

Holding the ball

When someone is tackled and the umpire deems they have had enough time to dispose of the ball.

Hailing a Taxi

When you believe the person is holding the ball you put up your hand to ask the umpire.

Disposal

An legal way of getting rid of the ball either by a kick or a handball. An illegal disposal will mean you get a free kick against you.

Fixture

Schedule of games which usually consists of home and away games.

Percentage

Is the difference between your total FOR score divided by your total AGAINST score and then multiplied by 100. Example: FOR 367 / 229 * 100 = 160.26.

White Line Fever

When you cross the boundary line onto the ground, all the opposition are enemies and none are mates.

Meet Jermayn

Web designer by trade and joint owner and creator of Kick2Kick. Played football for Chapman Valley football club for ~10 injured years up in Geraldton & had the pleasure of playing in their Grand Final win in 2001.
