Yellow and Red Cards

Posted on 29 March 2008 by

In every other leagues besides the AFL you can be given a yellow and red card if the umpire deems it necessary. Every league has different reasons why a card will be given out but basically if your carrying on and are a disturbance to the game, it is in the best interest for you to be given one.

You can be given a card if

  • You are reported by an umpire
  • continually argue or abuse an umpire
  • fighting and rough play

Consequences of receiving a card

A yellow card is the first offense and usually means you spend time off the field and are replaced by a team mate. However if you do something to warrant another card, you will be given a red card which means you cannot play the game and you have a date with the tribunal. The team cannot replace you for a period of time as well.

As you can see receiving a card yellow or red can really disrupt and penalise the team. If you play honest and clean, you will not need to worry about this rule.

Red and Yellow cards is quite a contentious issue. What are peoples opinion on them? I have myself never received one but I do know that it really hurts the team of who receives a card.

I tend to think however that it only causes the rift between players and umpires.
