Ok, we are getting two new teams but what will the fixtures look like when they come in? Kick2Kick brings some ideas forward and what are yours?

Ok we know that the bosses at the AFL want the two new teams in West Sydney and the Gold Coast and they have sorted the draft consessions starting from next years draft but what about the fixtures?

Recently Andrew Demetriou briefly mentioned adding extra rounds to the season, while I would love football all year round. I do not think it is possible for the well being of the players.

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/do-we-want-more-afl-teams"title="Do we REALLY want more AFL teams" >In an earlier post about the new teams it was briefly mentioned…

One good outcome of adding two new teams could be an even draw with every team playing each other once with half at home and half away and then next year they swap. So if Collingwood plays Fremantle at the MCG, next year they will play at Subiaco. This would mean instead of 22 rounds, you would have 17 rounds and the possibility of a proper State of Origin series.

The different writers at Kick2Kick has discussed these ideas, let us and others know what you would change or how you would set up the fixtures.

Kick2Kick 18 team fixtures suggestion

You would have every team play each other once which would account for 17 rounds and then you would have the <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tag/rivalry-round-2008/"title="More on the Rival Rounds" >Rival Round teams play a second time.

State of Origin carnival suggestion

Seeing Buddy play in the WA Jumper would be more appealing than a white jumper

This leaves four weeks left for a<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tag/split-round/"title="More on a Split Round" > split round and a <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tag/state-of-origin/"title="more on State Of Origin" >State of Origin series. I would break the states into two categories with an A and B and the bottom team of A gets delegated and the winner of B gets relegation into A.

A to start off with would be the traditional Football states of WA, SA, Vic and Tasmania and B would be Qld, NSW and NT. Which is similar as the under age carnivals. As time goes on with overseas players etc you could add an international or All Stars team to B.

imo this will be as even as you could ever get it without the players being too pushed to play too many games a year and you would get certain favoured clubs having to play out of Victoria for once.

Variables and other options

If you struggle to get enough players for the State of Origin series you could well get the state leagues to help top up the sides. However in looking at this years <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/hall-of-fame-match"title="more on the 08 Hall of Fame match" >Hall of Fame match, I am sure it would not be a problem.

Other options for the fixtures could be:

Split the 18 teams into two leagues (or divisions) and then after playing each other twice (home and away) and then extend the final series to include the top sides to play off.

Or Keep it as the same but instead have a team play 5 teams twice instead of currently playing 7 teams twice

Conclusion and your suggestions

Adding teams on face value will confuse the fixtures so I think we would need to do something that will simplify them. Please if you want to add further thoughts and ideas to our suggestions or even your own, please do below.

Collingwood defeated Port Adelaide by 31 points

Collingwood’s Travis Cloke is looking like he is hitting some good form which is much needed as he holds the key to Collingwoods final chances.

Port Adelaide on the other hand, what has happened? Like we have mentioned before they are the most disappointing team and now you can add the worst coached team. At the end of the first and second quarters Port had the run of the game and were down about 10 points and with 2-3 minutes left, they wind the clock down

Collingwoods run home: Sydney and Fremantle (away).

Adelaide defeated Essendon by 56 points

Adelaide has answered their goal kicking worries with some good games in Gill, Dangerfield and Moran etc. Goals win games, its amazing that Neil Craig and others forget this important detail. All of a sudden Adelaide are now a chance to scrap into the top four.

Essendon while have been flogged probably more this year than before with Sheedy as coach, I do prefer Knights as he has more ideas, a better game plan and more cut throat with his list unlike Sheedy who played favourites (Bradley, Johncock, Johnson x2 and Johns).

Adelaides run home: St Kilda (away) and Bulldogs.

Melbourne defeated West Coast by 34 points

In answer to our question last week, <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/will-west-coast-tank-and-will-you-run-on-the-ground"title="Would West Coast tank?" >would West Coast tank, the answer is yes they <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tanking-afl-style"title="Tanking AFL style explained" >tanked. While their forward line failed to function I do not think besides a quick good forward pocket (like Phil Matera) it needs much attention, they just need some pace and games into their young midfield (Voss will help hear).

Melbourne has a few stars in the making in Morton, Sylvia, Garland and Buckley which is the future of their club and if they pick up Watts (in the National Draft) to go alongside Newton, Wonaeamirri and Rivers they will have the forward line to build into a force.

Brisbane defeated Bulldogs by 11 points

Eade would be a worried man at the moment, while they have had a great season to end up 3rd they have struggled lately to stop key forwards having an impact, most experts (me included) has labbeled their forward line the problem, I am begining to see that <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/round-19-2008-wrapup#comment-1048"title="Bulldogs also need to fix their defense" >their defense also needs attention. This is a worry as they will play Hawthorn and Geelong who have a star studded attack.

Brisbane would be happy with that win and not just because they are still in the race for the finals but the fact that Ryan Hooper kicked 3 goals and it was NOT just the twin B’s that kicked their goals. If you want to be successful in finals you need a spread of goal kickers (Why Carlton will not make the finals).

Bulldogs run home: Essendon and Adelaide (away).
Brisbanes run home: Carlton and Sydney (away).

Geelong defeated Sydney by 39 points

Geelong look good at the moment especially with a number of stars about to return and with Hawks and the Dogs struggling for form, I cannot seem to see who will challenge them? Kangaroos maybe?

Sydney are just making up the numbers, Goodes injury worries is not good. Although Sydney cannot afford to ‘bottom out’ for marketing reasons, they really need to as it will be the only way they can build again for another premiership.

Geelongs run home: Kangaroos and West Coast.
Sydneys run home: Collingwood (away) and Brisbane.

The win bowled over even the Tiger players

Richmond defeated Hawthorn by 29 points

Wow upset of the round with Richmond defeating Hawks, thing that gets me is that the Tigers can have good wins like this but then play poorly against Adelaide the week before. They need at fix this problem before they will be treated with any respect.

Wallace is right that they are a bit too Buddy focused but when you have kicked 90 odd goals in 20 games, I can understand why. Think their achilles heal is their defense, while goals win premierships you need a decent defense that can actually stop them especially when your forwards miss-fire.

Hawthorns run home: West Coast (away) and Carlton.

Kangaroos defeated Carlton by 51 points

According to news reports Kerr is looking likely to become a Blue, I would rather chase another forward to help Fevola as he cannot kick them alone to play finals. He had 6 goals but they continuously struggle to get anyone else to kick a bag. I rate Waite but he always seems to play loose in defense.

Kangaroos have now won 6 games in a row and now face Geelong in round 21. They were also one of the last three teams to defeat them. Fully deserve fourth spot and are still the most under rated team.

Kangaroos run home: Geelong (away) and Port.

St Kilda defeated Fremantle by 43 points

St Kilda hold onto 8th spot by four points over Brisbane and while Saints have had some good wins in the last month (Freo away and Hawthorn) they are still too inconsistent with losses against West Coast and Collingwood.

Kiwi born Campbell looks promising for Fremantle with 5 goals in two games. Maybe they should have saved a lot by playing him instead of waste of space Tarrent.

St Kildas run home: Adelaide and Essendon.

With only three games to go the pressure is on some of the finals hopefuls to win, and will tanking become obvious?

There’s only three games remaining and the pressure is on the finals contenders leading into September. A top four finish is still on the cards for a couple of teams providing they continue to win. Will the Eagles tank? And will the Kangaroos make it 6 in a row and move into 4th position.

Port Adelaide vs Collingwood

The Power have had a pathetic season and have disappointed their fans all around the country. I think this game should be moved to Melbourne as it’s likely that no one but Collingwood supporters will show up. Collingwood need to win this game in Adelaide to get some confidence back in the team after a horrid two or so weeks with their president and club being embarrassed by some silly little boys with alcohol. It’s a wonder their noses haven’t grown with all the lying they’ve been doing

Collingwood win

Essendon vs Adelaide

Essendon shot themselves in the foot last week when they were unable to beat the lowly Eagles in Perth. Granted the Eagles played well, but the Bombers are too young to be as confident as they are. another year or so and they might, i say might be ready for the finals.

Adelaide have crossed to Dangerfield, literally with the young 18 year old debuting straight from the under 18s competition. It sounds like the crows may be complaining that they’ve had some key injuries this year and have to decided to combat that with some players who’ve never set foot on an AFL game before. I see the logic…not. They have emerged as pretenders and without Porplyzia they will struggle to win. But i think they will anyways.

Adelaide in a close one

Melbourne vs West Coast

Who will get smacked with the big fat wooden spoon? Personally i would LOVE to see the Eagles win it for the first time, but I don’t think they’re going to. too much pride. But Melbourne could give it away seeing <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/will-west-coast-tank-and-will-you-run-on-the-ground"title="Will the Eagles tank?" >as the talk is that the Eagles may be tanking. Personally i don’t think they are because if they were, they wouldn’t of <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/round-19-2008-wrapup"title="Round 19 wrap up" >beaten the Bombers last week. They seemed desperate to win and that desperation will cause an upset win. yes you heard it, the Eagles are underdogs. But they’re no dumb mutts and they will defeat the demons.

West Coast win

Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs

Can the twin towers withstand the Bulldog terrorists? Welcome home Akermanis, im sure all the fans are so happy to see you. um i think not, he might want to start a vending machine company with all the food and drink he’ll get thrown at him. Brisbane and the Bulldogs have both been struggling somewhat in recent times. Brisbane have the ammo up front but the Dogs have the cattle.

Bulldogs to win

Sydney vs Geelong

The Swans are needing a win if they want to stay in the top four, but I think that the reigning premiers will hunt the big white birds and tear their feathers out. Sydney are not the team they used to be and will probably have little impact on the finals.

Geelong are continuing to show why they will more than likely go back to back this year. they are unstoppable and so in sync with each other I swear they all have telepathic abilities. They are more than likely going to win this affair which may just be the preview of the Cats first final, unless the Kangaroos have something to do with it.

Geelong comfortably

Richmond vs Hawthorn

Richmond are a flop. Terry Wallace needs to go, otherwise they will not win a premiership. He couldn’t do it with the dogs, he WILL NOT do it with the Tigers. wouldn’t it just be so ironic if they finished ninth? They had an ok season but once again showed everyone why they are not a finals contender.

Chance Bateman resigned this week with the Hawks and will be a key player to help Buddy get his 100th goal

Hawthorn are sitting pretty in 2nd spot and big bad Buddy might just kick a bag to move past <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tag/100th-goal/"title="100 goals ina season" >one hundred goals. If he does will security be able to hold back all the crazed fans who just want a piece of Buddy Magic? We’ll see. Hawthorn are cruising along and after the Bulldogs fall from grace it seems they may be the only team to successfully challenge the might of Geelong in the Grand Final.

Hawthorn easily

Carlton vs North Melbourne

Carlton need a bit of luck and some hard fought victories if they want to make the eight. Starting here with the in form Kangaroos. Fevola and Judd need to fire up the troops if they want to overcome one of the most underrated but most improved teams in the league.

The Kangaroos just need to keep playing the way they are to ensure a top four finish and a real crack come September time. They have a tough task this week but i think the shinboners have what it takes to make it 6 in a row and come bounding into the finals

Kangaroos win

Fremantle vs St Kilda

Fremantle are the most unpredictable team in the world, and are facing the yo-yo-ing saints in Perth this week. Can they finish the season on a high and damage St Kilda’s chances of a finals berth or will they slip back into the background and have another disappointing year?

St Kilda must win otherwise they will be under serious threat from Carlton and Brisbane. Can they put their on and off field troubles behind them and snatch a win to stay in the finals? Unfortunately I think the Dockers might just pip them in Perth

Dockers win

Two big AFL issues that will have HUGE consequences. Will the Eagles tank against Melbourne in round 20 and will the fans run on the ground to celebrate the 100th goal?

Will the West Coast Eagles Tank?

This weekend West Coast Eagles who are 15th (with 4 wins for the season) are playing 16th side in Melbourne. The big question is now should they try and <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tanking-afl-style"title="Tanking AFL style explained" >win or loose (tank) and get a bonus draft pick?

A fan would probably hope for a close honourable lose BUT from a pure football point of view you would hope for a win as it will <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/is-2008-the-year-of-tanking"title="Is 2008 the year to tank" >douse the tanking issue after Carlton famousily tanked last year to get an extra draft pick and used it pick up a star in the trade market.

Personally I hate the rule but a lose will mean the Eagles get an extra pick in the top 20 (as I doubt they will win against Hawthorn and Geelong) and a chance to pick up a future star or use it for the trade (meat) market with Kerr reportly wanting out. This will help them rise to the finals quicker before the <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/do-we-want-more-afl-teams"title="Do we REALLY want more AFL teams?" >two new teams come into the competition.

What do you think will happen?

The running on the ground situation for 100th goal

The second interesting situation is would you run on the ground when Buddy Franklin and Brendon Fevola kick their hundredth goal? Personally I would and from past experience no amount of fines, security guards and plans to whisk them off would stop the fans do a timeless tradition.

Mathew Lloyd did not have a problem then and now about fans running on the ground

The AFL has imo ruined the tradition of having a kick on the ground after the game and now they want to ruin this one?

The last time a player has kicked 100 or more goals in a season is 2004 when the G-train did it. This season has seen the return of the key forwards with Lloyd back in form, Buddy and Franklin potentially reaching 100 goals and emergence of others like Roughead, Bradshaw, Pavlich and Brown.

Interesting is that Mathew Llyod a full forward who has been there done that, would like to see it happen and ex-Swans player Ryan Fitzgerald (now channel 10 funny man) himself injured and sitting in the stands when Lockett kicked his 100th run out and congratulated him with the fans.

It will be interesting as in two weeks time Buddy plays West Coast in Perth and although Buddy is a WA boy, I am sure he would get more reaction from the fans in round 20 or 22 when he plays in Melbourne. He needs 9 goals, which he could be a chance against Richmond.

Fevola needs 16 more and they play against North Melbourne (Telstra Dome), Brisbane Lions (Gabba) and then Hawthorn (Telstra Dome). Would it not be a perfect situation to see them both kick their 100th goal in their round 22 match against each others teams.

One week closer to the finals and the race for the top 8 is now down to 10 teams as Richmond and Essendon lost big games and can now look forward to next year along with so many others.

Geelong defeated Melbourne by 116 points

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tag/150-years/"title="More on the 150 years celebration" >The Football game is 150 years and this was suppose to be a celebration but with the AFL officials rather going to the boring Olympics this game turned into a major flop. Demons did not score at all in the first quarter, although their one highlight was Paul Johnsons goal.

Geelong run home: Sydney (away), Kangaroos and West Coast

Crawford get a win for his 300th game, congrats.

Carlton defeated Port Adelaide by 66 points

Carlton kept their final 8 chances alive with a demolition of Port Adelaide who is too worried about recruiting Didak next year and have put their cue back in the rack.

What was best about this win for Carlton was that they had more than 10 individual goal kickers and not just relying on Fev. Walker kicked 3 and could be a handy inclusion come the push for the final 8 as they have a tough run home to play two top 4 sides in Kangaroos and Hawthorn.

Carltons run home: Kangaroos, Brisbane (away) & Hawthorn.

Hawthorn defeated Brisbane by 69 points

Brisbane really needs to pull their finger out, if Brown and Bradshaw do not fire, neither do they. J Brown is an awesome player but if he wants a 5 year deal and be the premier big man of the competition, he needs to kick bags of goals week in - week out. Brisbane has another tough run home with 3 games against other top 8 wannabe sides.

Hawthorn looks like they will grab 2nd spot of the Bulldogs but that really is not important as they will play each other and although Hawks look the only team to challenge Geelong, Bulldogs would fancy themselves against the Hawks.

Hawthorns run home: Richmond, West Coast (away) & Carlton.
Brisbanes run home: Bulldogs, Carlton & Sydney (away).

Collingwood defeated St Kilda by 14 points

We learnt two things this week:

Collingwood does have a <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/the-worst-culture-afl-football-clubs"title="AFL teams who have a culture problem" >culture problem and <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/double-standards-by-the-afl-2"title="Double standards by the AFL" >not just their drinking but also the fact that they can only get up when they are the underdogs or struggling. Why they wont win a Grand Final under Malthouse.

St Kilda had us fooled by defeating Hawthorn a few weeks ago, they really do suck. They sucked and lost against teams they should have won in West Coast and Collingwood and only won due to Port tanking last week.

Collingwoods run home: Port (away), Sydney & Fremantle (away).
St Kilda’s run home: Fremantle (away), Adelaide & Essendon.

Sydney defeated Fremantle by 4 points

Lets get this right. Sydney won but only because Fremantle handed them the game. Yes Goodes kicked 8 and I think he would be a good key position player in the mold of Pavlich but with Freo 16 odd points up in the last quarter and <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/afls-simplest-skill"title="More on missing easy shots on goal" >missing two shots one 20m out by serial-misser/ chocker Pavlich and a post hit in the goal square, Freo lost and Sydney hold onto 4th spot with percentage over the Kangaroos.

Sydneys run home: Geelong, Collingwood (away) & Brisbane.

Kangaroos defeated Bulldogs by 20 points

Bulldogs while are in no danger of loosing 3rd spot need to be careful as you need to be in form come finals time and they are not. They have struggled in the last few weeks and at the moment will loose in straight sets to be knocked out of the finals. I have said it again and will say it again, they need a key forward to help provide a 2nd game plan of kicking it long when under pressure.

Kangaroos are the most under rated team in the competition. Last year they finished 4th and this year they look to be around the same, just out of the top 4 on percentage. B Harvey the little cheaky knipper also looks to get under the Gary Ablett Brownlow band wagon and may just pinch it.

McLeod also got a win for his 300th game, congrats.

Kangaroos run home: Carlton, Geelong (away) & Port.
Bulldogs run home: Brisbane (away), Essendon & Adelaide (away).

Adelaide defeated Richmond by 63 points

Look on the bright side Richmond supporters. You wont finish 9th

Adelaide are starting to hit some form and maybe a few weeks ago they went through their hard training that Neil Craig is so stern about (even though its made them loose countless final series). A good sprad of goal kickers will also put a smile to the coaches face with lesser known big boys of Gill, Stevens and Moran kicking goals.

Adelaides run home: Essendon (away), St Kilda (away) & Bulldogs.

West Coast defeated Essendon by 10 points

West Coast has had a better second half of the season with some solid form. Worsfold has tried some things which has payed off in the last few weeks with Lynch and Staker playing midfield and again Lynch starred with 11 inside 50s. McKinley also has risen to be an important goal kicker with a career high 7 goals (against Fletcher), however what has been better is his pressure in the forward line.

Next week West Coast play Melbourne and if West Coast wins, they loose on their extra draft pick with more than 4.5 wins…

Heading towards the pointy end of the AFL season and its time for the contenders to get serious about squeezing into the top 8.

MELBOURNE v GEELONG

Gary Ablett comes back into the Geelong line up after being out from injury. For Melbourne they have lost Aaron Davey (foot) but in comes Nathan Carroll, James Frawley and Nathan Jones for the clash with Geelong on Friday night.

Even with some handy inclusions for the Demons, they will be no match for the Cats who should use this game to fine tune their efforts for the up coming finals.

Geelong win.

Andrew McLeod plays his 300th game this weekend.

CARLTON v PORT ADELAIDE

Carlton need to win to keep some hope of making it into the final eight and these are games they should win if they are to be contenders and not passengers. Port Adelaide have been one of the major disappointments this season. How can you go from Grand Finalists to scraping the bottom of the barrel?

They could of won last week against the Saints but they show they lack some engine and heart to really grind out a win. Carlton lost to Adelaide at AAMI last week which is to be expected but they got close to an upset.

In comes Jason Saddington for the Blues which should bolster their defense for what I’m predicting should be a comfortable win.

Carlton win.

HAWTHORN v BRISBANE LIONS

The Brisbane Lions’ final campaign seems to be sinking quicker than decommissioned Navy ship. Recent losses to the Kangaroos and Richmond shows that something is lacking in the Lion’s gameplan. With players like Simon Black, Bradshaw and Brown in a team you think they would be doing a lot better than they are.

But it is the support team that is lacking. Guys like Drummond, Sherman, Brennan and Rischitelli need to step up. Some of these players are talented but don’t put in enough hard work to fully reach their potential.

Hawthorn have named an unchanged line up after beating Collingwood convincingly last week.

Hawthorn win.

COLLINGWOOD v ST KILDA

A hat trick of losses and some major off field issues have Collingwood looking as ordinary as Joffa’s haircut. Are Collingwood trying to emulate the West Coast Eagles of the past few years? I know Mick Malthouse is struggling for ideas but surely he could come up with a more original concept.

The Magpies definitely have some <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/the-worst-culture-afl-football-clubs"title="The Worst culture clubs exposed" >club culture issues to address but at least it has stopped Mick ‘the man with an opinion on everything’ Malthouse from talking. Sometimes silence can be golden.

I don’t think the off field misdemeanors have distracted the Magpies too much, they just have’nt been good enough to compete at a high level in the past month. The Saints had a good win over Port last week but will miss Luke Ball (hamstring) for the next few weeks.

It should be an interesting game with both teams sitting in similiar postions on the table, but I’m tipping a Collingwood win.

Collingwood win.

SYDNEY SWANS v FREMANTLE

The Dockers had a spirited win, in a Derby that no one really took an interest in last week. It was good to see them win for one of their club’s longest serving players, in Shaun McManus. Here is a guy who kicked liked a drunken donkey at times, but had more heart and determination than a draught horse.

A lot of his team mates could learn from him and his other friend in retirement Peter Bell. Names like Headland, Haselby and Farmer might not be as inept as Shaun was but definitely lack his ‘draught horse’ characteristics.

The Swans are staring down the barrel at a possibility of 3 losses in a row, but I can’t see that happening. Leo Barry and Adam Goodes are very handy ins for the Swans and they usually play the SCG well.

Sydney win.

NORTH MEBOURNE v WESTERN BULLDOGS

This could be a really interesting game. Both teams are playing into some form with the Bulldogs having a solid win against the Swans last week. The Kangaroos have won 4 in a row and are sitting pretty in 5th. Both teams play a similar brand of football. But what impresses me with the Kangaroos is guys like Petrie and Wells are taking what seems like, the next step up.

I am tipping a Western Bulldogs win in close game.

Western Bulldogs win.

ADELAIDE v RICHMOND

Congratulations to Andrew McLeod in reaching AFL 300 games for Adelaide Crows. Not only is he a great player of the game but is a good role model for other Indigenous players aspiring to play at the highest level. To think that he could of been a Docker but was overlooked, just goes to show that you shouldn’t judge people on first impressions. But what Freo lost was Adelaide’s gain.

Adelaide seem to be settling after last month’s hiccup of losses. Some solid wins against Carlton and Sydney have them back on track for a finals berth. The inclusions of Johncock and Tippett should make their line up even stronger.

Richmond have been very competitive but I can’t see them winning this week in Adelaide against the Crows.

Adelaide win.

WEST COAST EAGLES v ESSENDON

West Coast’s lack of skill almost looks like a disease with no cure during last week’s Derby. Some kids playing AusKick at half time would put them to shame and were probably more entertaining. But seriously it doesn’t look inspiring at the moment the way West Coast play.

Their last win against the Saints was a surprise but the concept of stringing two wins together seemed to abandon them last week. Essendon have had two wins on the trot and looked really good against the Demons last week. Matthew Knights is trying to inject some life into the club after its staleness in recent years and slowly they will get there.

Essendon win.

Hands up if you think the AFL is a joke? Hands up if your a fan who is sick and tired of incosistent tribunal decisions and double standing by the AFL handing out their decisions? I am….

The difference between Halls and Solomons whack is the broken jaw, what a JOKE!

Scenario one: Ben Cousins.

He did not get caught breaking any laws, I agree that it was fair by the West Coast Eagles to sack him as that was part of the deal, no trouble with the cops. However to see the AFL suspend him for 12 months for bringing the game into disrupt for what? He did not get charged with anything or even caught by the AFL for his drug taking.

Scenario two: Hall vs Solomon.

I wont comment on the difference between the Barry Hall and Solomons hit as the difference on why Solomon was that he broke someones jaw. I do NOT think the decisions should be based on who was injured how bad or not.

Scenario three: Round 18 tribunal decisions.

Milburn gets 4 weeks for slinging Richmond’s Shane Edwards yet Ports Surjan’s tackle on Harvey was unsighted and what gets me is that it was very similar as Richmonds Moore’s tackle on Nick Riewoldt which twisted his knee but only Milburn got sighted.

Shaw leaves the track after a wild weekend of drinking and lieing to the club

Maybe its because this is the only way Geelong could came back down to the level of the other clubs.

Scenario four: Collingwood vs West Coast.

We all know the trouble that West Coast got into last year by their undisclipine club, which I do think the AFL got it right. HOWEVER they seem to over look Collingwoods undisclipine…

This is Collingwoods rap sheet in the last few years.

2008 - Sharrod Wellingham caught drink driving.

2007 - Didak had a wild night out with Melbourne CBD killer Christopher Wayne Hudson.

2007 - Ben Johnson and then forward Chris Tarrant were also involved that year in a vicious brawl that left one man unconscious and led to a police investigation.

2006 - Chad Morrison booked for drink driving

2006 - Brodie Holland guilty of driving without a licence and assaulting a woman over a taxi

2006 - Didak charged with being drunk and disorderly.

2004 - Cameron Cloke fined $10, 000 for speeding

2003 - Dane Swan guilty of affray (what ever that is).

I think its time the club, Mcguire, Malthouse and the players get their act together and the AFL? Just because they are the AFLs baby, you cannot play favourites so pull your finger out..

Fans reactions and thoughts

So what do you as a fan of the club or even the AFL think? Do you think Collingwood should sack Didak and suspend Shaw even if effects their finals chances? And if Didak does get cut from the Magpies list would you want him to play at your club next year? And what about Cousins? Could he fit into your club?

8 points between spots 4 and 10 means the run home to the finals will be interesting with several big teams struggling in Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood.

The race to the finals is looking very tight and what will please many Victorians is that Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane the only non-victorian teams currently in the race all look shaky. What also will please 15 other teams is that Collingwood is really struggling at the moment and only 2 points away from missing the top 8.

Hawthorn defeated Collingwood by 54 points

Collingwood were never in the contest and are in real danger of missing out on the top 8, while Medhurst, Thomas and Didak are dangerous on the ground their problem lies in the fact that they do not have any tall players who can take a mark and provide a contest with Fraser and Rocca injured and the lack in the quality of their ruckman.

While Bulldogs wrapped up a top 3 spot this week, I still think only Hawthorn (and Buddy) can be the team who can challenge Geelong for the premiership.

Hawthorns run home: Brisbane (Tasmania), Richmond, West Coast (Subiaco) and Carlton.
Collingwoods run home: St Kilda, Port Adelaide (AAMI), Sydney and Fremantle (Subiaco)

Lloyd winds the years back with marks and goals

Essendon defeated Melbourne by 16 points

One of the games that really meant nothing with both teams struggling but Essendon do look a lot better especially with Llyod kicking 8 and taking a hanger.

I really like what Mathew Knights is doing at the Windy Hill and also what is happening at the Demons since Stynes took over. Lets hope that Melbourne’s rise financially will enable the team to be off the ‘endangered list’.

Adelaide defeated Carlton by 8 points

Carltons loss looks like they will miss on the finals this year but this break through year will hold them in good step for next year with Judd free from groin problems and the midfield looking dangerous. They still have a problem down back and would suggest they leave Kerr alone and go for a good backman, as they will help more than Kerr.

Adelaide may have unheralded their new Tony Modera with Moran kicking four which along with Maric and Tippet may be the forward line and ruck division that Adelaide have tried to get since their last premiership.

Adelaides run home: Richmond, Essendon (Telstra), St Kilda (Telstra) and Bulldogs.

Geelong defeated Richmond by 63 points

Looked good for the first 15 minutes but after that Geelong awoke and smashed the Tigers. They are looking awesome and do not forget that Ablett will probably return this weekend after a 3 week holiday.

Richmond will, I am sorry Tiger fans but will probably just miss out on the finals… yet again.

Geelongs run home: Melbourne, Sydney (Sydney), Kangaroos and West Coast
Richmonds run home: Adelaide (Adelaide), Hawthorn, Fremantle and Melbourne

Kangaroos defeated Brisbane by 8 points

Brisbane came back awesome in the third quarter to hit the lead and then they went back to sleep and could have cost themselves a top 8 spot, they are now out of the 8 and the Kangaroos are now the same number of points of being fourth. Top four two years in a row is not bad for a side no one rates.

Brisbane seem to lack a second game plan and if the twin Bs are not kicking them, who is left?

Kangaroos run home: Bulldogs, Carlton, Geelong and Port Adelaide.
Brisbane’s run home: Hawthorn (Tasmania), Bulldogs, Carlton and Sydney (SCG)

Bulldogs defeated Sydney by 16 points

Sydney are also in danger of loosing their fourth spot but means they may miss playing Geelong..

Bulldogs started slow but once warmed up they showed why people really rate them this year and beating Sydney (twice), Hawthorn, Kangaroos (draw) and Adelaide shows they are a real serious chance to challenge Geelong.

Bulldogs run home: Kangaroos, Brisbane (Gabba), Essendon and Adelaide (AAMI)
Sydney’s run home: Fremantle, Geelong, Collingwood (Telstra) and Brisbane.

St Kilda defeated Port Adelaide by 8 points

St Kilda looked like they would loose twice to bottom four teams after pulling off one of the upsets of the year beating Hawthorn in <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/afl-2008-round-16-wrapup"title="Round 16 wrapup" >round 16 BUT then Port realised that a win would damage their chances of having a better pick in this years draft so they <a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/tanking-afl-style"title="more about Tanking" >tanked for a quarter…

McManus is the type of player who more should aim to be like.

St Kilda’s run home: Collingwood, Fremantle (Subiaco), Adelaide and Essendon.

Fremantle defeated West Coast by 33 points

McManus got his grand final win after all by beating the worst team in the competition this year. Good on him for getting the best out of his body and skill level, if only more players played with heart and gave their best like him.

The finals are drawing closer and teams are battling it out for the final few placements in the 8.

Round 18 kicks off on Friday night with a big clash between Collingwood and the third placed Hawks. The final few games for the season will determine the final few spots for the eight with 7 teams still very much in the hunt to make up the final four spots in the Eight.

Collingwood vs Hawthorn

Collingwood are pretenders and have lost some very valuable games lately. They don’t have what it take to win a premiership and i stand by my comments in that they need to replace Mick Malthouse. However they should provide a contest against the Hawks on Friday night.

The Hawks have missed some oppurtunities to move into second spot but are still looking fairly good for September. They should get the job done against the 6th placed Magpies.

Hawks win

Essendon vs Melbourne

The bombers are barely in contention for the finals provided that they continue to win games. They will more than likely have to win all their games to have a chance, and they need to win this week against the bottom placed Demons.

Melbourne haven’t been too bad over the last few weeks. They were easily accounted for last week but their future does look somewhat hopeful for the coming years. A win here would instill some pride and all but end Essendon’s chances of a finals berth. However I think the Bombers should take the victory.

Bombers win

Adelaide vs Carlton

Brendan Fevola has commited to Carlton during the week

Two teams who are still fighting it out for a spot in the 8. Adelaide had a fantastic win over Sydney in Sydney last week. Porplyzia placed magnificently and really is a shining light for the Crows at the moment. They should be able to beat Carlton in Adelaide.

Carlton had a very hard fought comeback win over the Bulldogs last week. Fevola was a key to the win and with the signing of his contract during the week he should be on fire again this weekend. If he and Judd can really get going then the Blues will be a real chance.

Adelaide win

Geelong vs Richmond

Geelong have fended off the Bulldogs and the Hawks in successive weeks and are yet again the team looking to take the premiership. They are literally unstoppable and the Tigers should be an easy task for them.

Richmond have a tough final couple of weeks and need to dig in if they’re to make the finals. An upset win over the reigning premiers would really get them going but i don’t think they have the depth to defeat the Cats.

Cats win

Kangaroos vs Brisbane

Another two of the finals hopefuls face off this weekend and what a big game it will be. A North Melbourne win will see them comfortably nestled in the top 8 but a loss allows them to be overtaken. They are a good team but I don’t know if they will beat Brisbane on the Gold Coast.

Brisbane are still very much in the hunt for the finals but they need to put last weeks loss behind them and move forward and win some games. They are literally at home at Carrara and I think they might just take down the Kangaroos.

Brisbane win

Western Bulldogs vs Sydney

The Bulldogs have lost two straight and I think that they might come out this rounds with a reals sense of hunger. A few players need to work harder but I think that they can bounce back and take the Swans.

Sydney had a bit of a shock losing to Adelaide at home and they should bounce back reasonably well. However I think that the Bulldogs might just pip them.

Bulldogs win

St Kilda vs Port Adelaide

St Kilda had a bit of a wake up call at Subiaco last week losing to the lowly Eagles. If they want to be a finals threat they need to win those games, and they will be looking to rectify on Sunday against Port Adelaide.

Port Adelaide tried hard but couldn’t make it two in a row against Fremantle. What a fall from power. To go from grand finalists and to not even making the finals this year. I doubt they will upset the Saints.

St Kilda win

Fremantle vs West Coast

What a unexciting affair this will be. Both teams have been absolutely rubbish this year and while it should be a good game seeing as they both sit in the bottom four, not many people will look at it with much interest. The only good thing is, is one of these teams can make it two ina row after both won last week. Fremantle lose their most experienced player Shaun McManus and should win it for him.

Fremantle win
