You couldn't hope for a better Grand Final with 1st versus 2nd Collingwood v Geelong. Get out the Defibrilators 'cos this is going to be a heart stopping finale to a fantastic 2011 AFL season.

Collingwood v Geelong

Saturday MCG,
Last time: Geelong 22.17 (149) d Collingwood 8.5 (53), round 24, 2011 at the MCG

Collingwood Ins: Alex Fasolo Outs: Dayne Beams (groin)
Geelong Ins: No change Outs: No change

Collingwood just managed to scrape by Hawthorn last week by 3 points in a basically a match where they were outplayed for most of the game but put together a ‘champion’s’ quarter in the last, to hold out the Hawks. The other final taking place was at polar opposites with Geelong annihilating West Coast by 48 points and giving the young boys from the west a good football lesson.

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/2011-afl-grand-final-tips-collingwood-v-geelong/dane-swan-2/"rel="attachment wp-att-5990" >
Master and Apprentice. Can the Pies in Mickey's last hurrah cap off Swan's Brownlow win and go back to back premiers?

Grand Finals are always a much anticipated affair but this one holds especially true with so many factors and interesting bylines. Collingwood are looking to successfully defend their premiership from last year, something they haven’t been able to do since way back in 1936. It will probably be Micky Malthouse‘s last game as coach as Collingwood and in his debut season of coaching, Chris Scott‘s first Grand Final campaign for the Cats.

These two teams have been the best in the AFL in recent years and this is evident by these two being the last two premiers ( Magpies in ’10 and Cats in ’09). Geelong have been one of the best teams this decade with only Brisbane of the early 2000s still a slither ahead in terms of greatness. They might not get the hat-trick of premierships of the Lions/Bears but if Geelong can win come Saturday they will certainly make a case for best team of the last 10 years.

Dane Swan for Collingwood also took out the ‘Charlie’ for Fairest and Best this year. An interesting fact that many also dig up come Grand Final Weekout of the past 20 years, 5 times the Brownlow Medal winner has come from losing Grand Final side of that same year. On the flipside it has also occurred 5 times, that the Brownlow medallist has gone on to win a premiership medallion that same year. So as far as facts go it is even stevens.

This year Geelong have had the knockers on Collingwood, winning both matches this year, a reversal of 2010 where Collingwood won their two encounters and then went on to claim the premiership.

Unlucky for Collingwood’s Dayne Beams (groin) who will miss this year’s GF but in comes a worthy replacement in Alex Fasolo who has been a revelation this season for the Pies. Geelong are not giving anything away but have a list of emergencies ( Shannon Byrnes, Darren Milburn, Cameron Guthrie ) that could easily slot into their 18 if needed.

It is hard to split the difference between these two teams and although Geelong have the better record this season against the Pies, Round 24′s 96 point thrashing by the Cats almost does not come into the equation.

Battle of the Midfields

Looking at both teams on paper it is amazing the depth the Cats and Pies have at hand. Geelong have a midfield machine with 6 players averaging more than 20+ possessions a game. ( Selwood, Corey, Kelly, Chapman, Ling and Bartel ) and with Mitch Duncan, Andrew Mackie in support the Cats can certainly get the job done.

Collingwood have ball magnet Dane Swan who seemingly gets to run free every match by the opposition, Scott Pendlebury, Daisy Thomas and Luke Ball are all averaging 20+ possessions per game. Heath Shaw plays like an extra midfielder coming off the half back line and Jarryd Blair does a fine impression of Mighty Mouse.

Gamebreaking Forwards

Travis Cloke has come of age, with such a consistent year he really showed why he is All Australian material with his big mitts and long boot making crucial appearances in last week’s cliffhanger sudden death final against the Hawks. Alan Didak is always a danger up forward and still can pinch hit when needed.

For Geelong James Podsiadly, Travis Varcoe and Stevie Johnson ( if fully fit ) are a triple threat of that X Factor when they are hot they are red hot. J Pod has finally been able to kick a few bags outside the realm of Kardy Park and both Varcoe and Stevie J can be ridiculously good or just plain ridiculous.

Defence Defence Defence

With all the attacking options of Geelong we forget just how good their defence is with the Cats ranked 2nd in opponents scoring the least amount of points against them. The number 1 ranked team with that same stat is of course, Collingwood. So obviously trying to find differences is as easy as splitting hairs…To me Collingwood are very adept at spreading their defensive options with O’Brien, Shaw and Maxwell counter-attacking and rebounding. Geelong have some very fine key position players in Scarlett and Taylor and usually have their midfield dropping back to pitch in.

Who will win?

Both teams have great ruckmen in Darren Jolly (Collingwood) and Brad Ottens (Geelong) and are so even in every facet it is uncanny. I still feel like Geelong show a lot of hunger and look a better team even without a superstar like the Great Garry Ablett jnr. High on emotion Collingwood have every reason to win and are not minor premiers for nothing. It won’t be another drawn Grand Final, but my heart will skip a beat and Geelong will just get there.

Geelong by 1 point

They say the ladder never lies and in the second last weekend of the season, the best four teams at the end of the regular season are the last men standing. Collingwood and Geelong have definitely earned their stripes, the Hawks have been the best of the rest and West Coast are living the fairytale from going from cellar dwellers to finals contenders!

Collingwood v Hawthorn

Friday Night MCG,
Last time: Collingwood 15.16 (106) d Hawthorn 9.11 (65), round 15, 2011 at the MCG

Collingwood Ins: Dale Thomas, Ben Reid Outs: Tyson Goldsack, Alex Fasolo
Hawthorn Ins: No change Outs: No change

The luxury of winning your first week of finals means that the Magpies are like a prime cut of beef in a steakhouse – well rested. Being the best team of the 2011 regular season Collingwood have immense depth in the playing list and the unlucky duo of Tyson Moneybags and Alex Fasolo have to make way for Daisy Thomas and Ben Reid.

After sealing the deal with a 20 point win over the Eagle boys, Collingwood now turn their attention to an inspired Hawks outfit fired up from a 36 point victory against Sydney last weekend. The Hot Pies needed a rest considering a few of their players ( Nick Maxwell (thumb), Leon Davis (hamstring), Ben Reid (groin) and Chris Tarrant (ankle) ) have been less than fully fit in the latter stages of the season.

Quite simply put Buddy Franklin was inspirational last round against the Bloods, looking like a lame duck after tweaking his knee in their loss to Geelong he was reborn with 17 disposals and 4 goals. Who will match up on him? Chris Tarrant looks the most obvious choice but the Maggies’ defence spread so well Maxwell, Shaw and O’Brien will have it more than covered.

On the other side of the coin, it will be interesting to see how Hawthorn’s defence handles the forward press from the Collingwood forward line. Travis Cloke is having his best season yet leading the way in marks and goals for his club but most importantly his marking is the best in the league.

Who will win? Collingwood are deservingly the favourites on form, but the Hawks do have that unknown quality of producing something special. There are the likely candidates in Rioli and Hodge but what has impressed me most is the form of the guys that go under the radar like Grant Birchall and David Hale.

Collingwood by a whisker (2 points)

Geelong v West Coast

Saturday MCG,
Last time: West Coast 14.12 (96) d Geelong 13.10 (88), round 16, 2011 at Patersons Stadium

Geelong Ins: Joel Corey Outs: Daniel Menzel (knee)
West Coast Ins: No change Outs: No change

The history between these old modern day rivals is not pretty! Cat fans still lament the lost premiership years of 1992 and 1994 against West Coast. Geelong have deservingly been the second best team of the year and really only look like the team capable of knowing the Magpies off their perch ( As they did in twice this year ).

With a week off it could only benefit the weary, battered bodies of the veteran Geelong players, but it was promising youngster Daniel Menzel who injured his knee in the Hawks’ clash who will miss the rest of the finals series and then some.

For West Coast there was no week off last round and after such a draining 3 point win over Carlton, it will be interesting to see if they can maintain the levels of intensity they showed when they beat Geelong earlier this year in Perth.

Both teams do share remarkable similarities in playing style with more than capable midfields, rock solid defence and mobile big men. As we saw against the Hawks two weeks ago Geelong have a dynamic forward line that can explode with numerous outbursts of goals at the drop of a hat. Varcoe, J-Pod, Christensen, Johnson, Tomahawk and even Ottens (that’s pretty much their whole forward half) offer plenty of goal and marking opportunities when given enough space.

One thing the Eagles don’t lack is defensive pressure with their trademark style of the forward press just an extension of coach John Worsfold‘s overall defensive philosophy. After last week’s taxing encounter West Coast will be hoping Cox, Kerr and some of the more matured Eagles can hold up for this battle on Saturday.

It really will be a surprise to me if the ‘youthful’ Eagles can beat a more battle hardened, experienced side like Geelong. A lot of people tend to look at the negatives of Geelong having more than a few players heading towards the twilight of their careers. But you have to admit experience in finals is an invaluable thing and the Cats have proven that they are still hungry for success.

Geelong by 15 points

Almost overshadowed by the talk off field there is actually two cracking matches of do or die finals this weekend guys! Hawks v Sydney should be a grinding affair and in the West, the Eagles battle it out with Carlton.

Wow the football this weekend has been slightly overshadowed by the game of musical chairs down at Fremantle, but yes there is a finals series still in place and it kicks off tonight with what could be another arm-wrestle.

Hawthorn v Sydney

Friday MCG,
Last time: Hawthorn 15.16 (106) d Sydney Swans 8.12 (60), round nine, 2011 at SCG

Hawthorn Ins: Benjamin Stratton Outs: Luke Breust
Sydney Ins: No change Outs: No change

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/2011-afl-finals-week-2-semi-finals-tips/adam_goodes_350_x_504/"rel="attachment wp-att-5889" >
Pardon the pun but how Goodes is he? 300 games this weekend and still a dominant force for the Swans.

The Hawks last week were battered by the Cats last week in more ways than one, first on the scoreboard and secondly when Buddy Franklin seemed to have done some serious damage to his knee – but he has been named to start so we can only assume that obviously it was only a heartlage. I don’t think Buddy will play because the injury was definitely on the more severe side of things and if Franklin plays he can’t be close to 100%.

That aside there are 35 other players out there on the park and that really doesn’t excuse the fact the Hawks were pretty lackluster last week against a dominant Cats side. Cyril Rioli really struggled to get into the game and is one of those players that needs a few early touches of the Sherrin just to get a feel for it. Luke Hodge looked a little proppy with a possible corked thigh and a few players like Sammy Mitchell, Jordan Lewis and Shaun Burgoyne were very quiet.

Now to the Swans who whether they like it or not ( I’m pretty sure they revel in the fact ) they go under the radar even when there is only a handful of games played last weekend.

The Bloods managed to in their accustomed unfashionable style overcome the Saints by 25 points and seem to be getting the most out of the vintage form of veterans Adam Goodes and Ryan O’Keefe.

It is Goodes‘ 300th AFL game this weekend so the Swans will be going hell for leather trying to beat the Hawks at the MCG where they are 1 win from 13 matches. That coupled with the fact the Hawks actually play the Swans pretty well ( 3 wins from past 4 matches ) will make it a tough day at the office for the Swans.

Hawthorn by 12 points

West Coast v Carlton

Saturday Patersons Stadium,
Last time: West Coast 15.13 (103) d Carlton 10.7 (67), round fourteen, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

West Coast Ins: Daniel Kerr Outs: Bradley Ebert
Carlton Ins: No change Outs: No change

Fortress Subiaco is where this match will take place and no matter what you think, you have to admit the Eagles look a lot better in front of a home crowd than they do playing the Blues in Melbourne. That’s why Woosha knows the importance of that second bite at the cherry as a reward for fourth place, and playing a home final is like a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

The Eagles were valiant in defeat to the Magpies and got within a whisker of beating them before succumbing by 20 points by the end of the match. If it is even possible the Eagles have kept improving just when most expected them to fade and their pressure on the contested football at breakdowns is starting to worry even the best of oppositions.

It is an added bonus West coast have been able to rest Daniel Kerr to have him back for this important final. When you put his name together with Luke Shuey, Matthew Priddis, Andrew Embley, Nic Naitanui, Dean Cox, Adam Selwood, Scott Selwood, Chris Masten, Patrick McGinnity and Andrew Gaff the Eagles have a lot of run in their midfield to counter Carlton’s stellar engine room.

Carlton were impressive in their whipping 62 point win over the Bombers last week but lets face it Essendon were merely making up the numbers in the top eight this year. The Blues need to find the same intensity that made them the team to beat a few rounds back earlier in the season. It will be a monumental task trying to beat the Eagles in the West but they have a great record on the road and have won at Subi this year against Fremantle.

The ground should suit their type of wide running play and Chris Judd knows it very well ‘from doin time’ with the Eagles back at the start of his career. A big game is needed by Robert Warnock in the ruck to shoulder the responsibly of going head to head with the best one two Ruck combination in the business.

It is a tough ask for the Blues but they are a chance if they bring their ‘A’ game, the only problem is West Coast are a certainty to put it on the table and put it on the line in front of a home crowd.

West Coast by 26 points

Can they beat their bogey team Hawthorn tonight?

Geelong had a massive win over Collingwood for their their last match of the regular season by 96 points and while not much can be read into the win for the benefit of Pie supporters, a win of that magnitude simply can’t be ignored and just showed why Geelong have been the most consistent team in recent years. Their ability to reinvent the wheel while maintaining momentum has seen the Cats introduce some young talent (Mitch Duncan, Allen Christensen, Trent West and Daniel Menzel ) and not lose stride.

Hawthorn did enough to beat Gold Coast last week but seem to be a much wiser group of players than the one that took them to the GF victory over Geelong in 2008. Resting a number of players including stars Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli the Hawks should be at their optimum to challenge anything Geelong send their way.

It should be a very close match with the last 5 encounters going in Geelong’s favour but at an average winning margin of 7 points.

Geelong by 8 points

Collingwood v West Coast

West Coast Ins: Daniel Kerr, Will Schofield Outs: Ashley Smith, Pat McGinnity

While Collingwood fans would of been a little bewildered by last week’s showing West Coast’s grew quietly confident with a powerful 95 point display against a season weary Crows outfit. It still perplexes me the turnaround from 16th last year to 4th at the end or the regular season for the boys from the west, but Woosha obviously saw the talent he had at his disposal.

For the Eagles it is a good blend of the youth living up to potential ( Luke Shuey, Jack Darling and Nic Naitanui ) with a mix of the senior players ( Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr, Andrew Embley ) having a resurgence of vintage form.

The Magpies have been by far and away the benchmark this season and like the Eagles have the perfect blend of youth and experience but have so much depth, that even without betting buddies Nick Maxwell and Heath Shaw someone like an Adam Fasolo or a Jarryd Blair can stand up and grasp their limited opportunities with much gusto.

With the game at the MCG Collingwood should win but the result should be alot closer than last time these two met here.

Collingwood by 14 points

St Kilda v Sydney

6th v 7th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Sydney Swans 10.23 (83) d St Kilda 10.8 (68), round 22, 2011 at ANZ Stadium

St Kilda Ins: David Armitage Outs: Michael S. Gardiner
Sydney Ins: Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Sam Reid Outs: Nick Malceski, Lewis Jetta

St Kilda have done a Lazarus and not only resurrected their season just in time but have made a strong case as the best of the rest with a season ending victory over Carlton last round. Last time these two teams met Sydneygot over the line but the Saints were without key players Justin Koschitzke and Zac Dawson.

Sydney unfashionably grind out their matches, but looking at their past month of football since their lost to Richmond it has been all wins the most notable being a shocking victory over Geelong at Skilled stadium.

Not much has separated these two teams in recent encounters but it is a case of St Kilda’s more refined style versus the dogged determination and big hearts of the Bloods- Sydney.

Another close encounter but St Kilda just for me.

St Kilda by 5 points

Carlton v Essendon

5th v 8th Sunday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Carlton 24.9 (153) d Essendon 12.7 (79), round 18, 2011 at MCG

Carlton Ins: Paul Bower, Andrew Carrazzo, Bret Thornton, Michael Jamison, David Ellard Outs: Jordan Russell, Matthew Kreuzer (foot)
Essendon Ins: Ricky Dyson, Dustin Fletcher, Heath Hocking, Sam Lonergan, Tom Bellchambers Outs: Andrew Welsh, Cale Hooker

Everyone loves a grudge match don’t they and when these two fierce rivals clash they always dig some little niggle out of the dusty drawer to just add some spice to the match. But history aside both teams leading into this match have been less than impressive.

Carlton dropped out of the top 4 and finished off their season with losses in their last two matches, while Essendon did beat Sydney, they struggled against Collingwood, Carlton and West Coast.

Desperation is the key here and the team who wants the win the most will win. Essendon when they have that hunger can pull over a victory while the Blues have had too many disappointing seasons to let another one slip away.

Carlton by 16 points

Collingwood v Geelong

1st v 2nd Friday MCG,
Last time: Geelong 8.17 (65) d Collingwood 9.8 (62), round 8, 2011 at the MCG

The Magpies have gone from strength to strength since their lost to Geelong in round 8, with their latest win being a bone crunching 80 point win over Fremantle. But Geelong shocked everyone last round with their loss to Sydney and of all places at Skilled Stadium!

Collingwood looked the much stronger team going into this clash and while the Cats are not to be underestimated with finals literally next week, both teams will tentatively be battling it out.

Collingwood by 7 points

Gold Coast v Hawthorn

16th v 3rd Saturday Metricon Stadium,
Last time: Hawthorn 19.15 (129) d Gold Coast 8.10 (58), round 13, 2011 at Aurora Stadium

Gold Coast Ins: Josh Fraser, Josh Toy, Jacob Gillbee, Joel Tippett Outs: Sam Iles, Tom Hickey, Seb Tape, Nathan Ablett
Hawthorn Ins: Chance Bateman, Xavier Ellis, Rick Ladson, Sam Mitchell, Paul A. Johnson, Jordan Lisle, Benjamin Stratton, Kyle Cheney Outs: Max Bailey (rested), Grant Birchall (rested), Lance Franklin (rested), Luke Hodge (rested), Jordan Lewis (rested), Brad Sewell (rested), Cyril Rioli (rested), Shaun Burgoyne (rested)

The Hawks have taken the resting approach not wanting to risk injure and/or trying to get an advantage on next week’s opponents, but have some suitable replacements in Bateman, Ellis and Sammy Mitchell. The Gold Coast will be hoping just to get through the game with a strong showing but knowingly will be looking to a brighter start in 2012.

Hawthorn by 43 points

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle

10th v 13th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Fremantle 12.13 (85) d Western Bulldogs 11.12 (78), round five, 2011, at Patersons Stadium

Western Bulldogs Ins: Ben Hudson, Easton Wood, Mitchell Wallis Outs: Dylan Addison, Josh Hill, Ayce Cordy (Hand)
Fremantle Ins: Antoni Grover, Benjamin Bucovaz, Justin Bollenhagen, Alex Silvagni, Jayden Pitt Outs: Garrick Ibbotson (shoulder), Rhys Palmer (groin), Nathan Fyfe (shoulder), Peter Faulks (jaw), Nick Lower (suspension)

The Bulldogs were good for a half of football last week against a much better side in Hawthorn and definitely will take that confidence with them into their match against Fremantle. Held together by Duct tape and WD40 the Dockers fell out of the 8 with just too many injuries (22 and counting) and obviously the depth of the list was thoroughly tested.

Footscray by 36 points

Sydney v Brisbane

7th v 15th Saturday SCG,
Last time: Sydney Swans 17.14 (116) d Brisbane Lions 7.9 (51), round 11, 2011 at the Gabba

Sydney Ins: Jarrad McVeigh Outs: Brett Meredith
Brisbane Ins: James Hawksley, Ryan Harwood Outs: Luke Power (retired), Brent Staker (knee)

Just when you start to doubt Sydney, like a Red dog to a bone they keep on grinding away and their surprise win against Geelong last round is the Bloods personified. Sydney will be pressing for a win to take some of that momentum into the first week of finals and have won their last 3 encounters against the Lions.

Brisbane have shown some fight in recent weeks and almost pulled off an upset getting close to West Coast last weekend, but I expect Sydney to continue their good run against Brisbane.

Sydney by 14 points

  West Coast v Adelaide

4th v 14th Saturday Patersons Stadium,
Last time: Adelaide 10.7 (67) lost to West Coast 15.16 (106), round 12, 2011 at AAMI Stadium

West Coast Ins: Sam Butler, Jack Darling Outs: Will Schofield (cheek), Ashton Hams
Adelaide Ins: Michael Doughty, Ricky Henderson, Richard Tambling, Ian Callinan Outs: Andy Otten (concussion), Brodie Martin (groin), Aidan Riley, Jack Gunston (shoulder)

After notching up that vital win to secure 4th spot and a double bite of the finals cherry you could excuse the Eagles for taking it easy going into this match. But adding Butler and Darling to an already full strength side just shows you the intent West Coast have leading into this match.

The Crows have been better under caretaker coach Bickley winning a few games against the lowly sides of the competition, but the Eagles at home is a hard task for any team regardless of form.

West Coast by 56 points

   Carlton v St Kilda

5th v 6th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Carlton 11.18 (84) d St Kilda 12.9 (81), round 7, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

Carlton Ins: S.O’hAilpin , K.Lucas , Z.Tuohy Outs: B.Thornton (soreness), D.Ellard (omitted), M.Davies (omitted)
St Kilda Ins: M.Gardiner Outs: D.Armitage (suspension)

Collingwood v Geelong should be a great match but I think this game could be match of the round as both the Blues and Saints are at fairly even levels at the moment.

With contrasting starts to the season you wouldn’t think two teams could be so similar but both Carlton and St Kilda have an Achilles heel facing opposition within the top 8. The Blues had a loss before last week’s bye, while the Saints were able to snap their 2 game losing streak (Collingwood,Sydney) with a win over the Kangas.

Who will get the job done? It is a tough one but I still think the Blues have the better midfield and can do enough to contain any counter attack by Riewoldt and associates up front.

Carlton by 13 points

Port Adelaide v Melbourne

17th v 12th Sunday Adelaide Oval,

Last time: Melbourne 17.11 (113) d Port Adelaide 14.8 (92), round 17, 2011 at TIO Stadium

Port Adelaide Ins: Dean Brogan, Kane Cornes, Aaron Young Outs:
Melbourne Ins: Matthew Bate, Rohan Bail, Jack Fitzpatrick, Daniel Nicholson Outs: Liam Jurrah (wrist)

Both Port Adelaide and Melbourne gave a lot better performances last round. The Power came within a couple of goals of beating Essendon and the Dees looked comfortable in their 30 point win over Gold Coast.

With the last match of the season for both clubs, both hoping to end the season on a little positive note – a win. Port are the home team but the game is at Adelaide Oval not their usual hunting ground.

Last time these two teams met it was in the N.T but regardless I think Melbourne are the better team on paper.

Melbourne by 11 points

Richmond v North Melbourne

11th v 9th Sunday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Richmond 17.10 (112) d North Melbourne 14.19 (103), round 5, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

Richmond Ins: Matthew White, Matt Dea, Ben Nason, Dean MacDonald Outs: Jake King (suspension)
North Melbourne Ins: Hamish McIntosh, Daniel Pratt, Ben Warren, Ben Cunnington, Aaron Black, Jamie Macmillan, Shaun Atley Outs: Daniel Wells (shoulder), Lachlan Hansen (shoulder), Levi Greenwood (suspension), Jack Ziebell (suspension)

There is potential for this match to be a beauty with Richmond in decent form winning their last 3 games, highlighted with a win over Sydney and the Kangas blowing their final chances last round but still worthy opponents.

Missing a few players like Wells and Ziebell could hurt Norths and Richmond could just sneak past them on this one.

host of injuries it is not looking any better tonight when they take on the Magpies. Collingwood meanwhile continue on their merry way doing enough last week to overcome a spirited Brisbane side.

Forget about no Pavlich no Dockers, its more like no team = no Dockers with an injury list of 18 and counting….

Collingwood by 42 points

Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs

3rd v 11th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Hawthorn 13.13 (91) d Western Bulldogs 9.8 (62), round 10, 2011, at Etihad Stadium

Hawthorn Ins: Shane Savage Outs: Chance Bateman (soreness)
Western Bulldogs Ins: Josh Hill, Luke Dahlhaus Outs: Christian Howard, Nathan Djerrkura (general soreness)

Both teams are coming off a win the more significant being the Hawk’s victory over fellow contenders Carlton. For the Bulldogs a win is a win but playing against Port Radelaide you are pretty much guaranteed at the moment.

The Hawks are on a 6 game winning streak and don’t look like stopping at the moment as they make a strong case for challengers to the Geelong/Collingwood duopoly at the top of the heap.

Hawthorn by 35 points

Geelong v Sydney

2nd v 7th Saturday Skilled Stadium,
Last time: Geelong 11.15 (81) d Sydney Swans 7.12 (54), round 4, 2011 at the SCG

Geelong Ins: Andrew Mackie, Matthew Scarlett, Tom Hawkins, Trent West Outs: Joel Corey (groin), Cameron Mooney (suspension), Mitch Duncan, Nathan Vardy (hip)
Sydney Ins: Brett Meredith, Luke Parker Outs: Jarrad McVeigh (personal), Lewis Jetta

Every game is important for Sydney as they try and hold out their position in the top eight. Their win last week against the Saints was a crucial one but facing Geelong in Catland is mission impossible.

Geelong should be too strong against the Swans who haven’t won at Skilled Stadium since 1999.

Geelong by 38 points

St Kilda v North Melbourne

6th v 9th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: St Kilda 12.7 (79) d North Melbourne 10.10 (70), round 15, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

St Kilda Ins: Justin Koschitzke, Zac Dawson Outs: Steven Baker, Tom Lynch
North Ins: No change Outs: No change

This is possibly match of the round, with a close result more than likely as North Melbourne coming over a 98 point win over the Dockers face a Saints team trying to snap a 2 game losing streak. St Kilda have faced tough opposition in recent weeks ( Collingwood, Sydney ) and need to secure at least one more win in the next two weeks to lock in a top eight slot.

The Kangas need to win pretty much their last two matches which seems like a mammoth task but a win this week and the following week against the Tigers is probable given the way Norths have been playing.

It should be a pretty interesting battle in the midfield with Daniel Wells and Andrew Swallow leading a Kanga outfit that has a few players like Grima, Bastinac, Ziebell that have been more than handy this season.

The Saints definietly have that finals grit and determination but can’t let the Kangaroos out to a bolter if they are to win.

St Kilda by 8 points

Brisbane v West Coast

15th v 4th Saturday Gabba,
Last time: Brisbane Lions 10.10 (70) d West Coast 9.11 (65), round 19, 2010 at Subiaco Oval

Brisbane Ins: Bryce Retzlaff Outs: Mitch Clark (knee)
West Coast Ins: Patrick McGinnity Outs: Daniel Kerr (back)

Quite simply if the Eagles win they lock down a top four spot and a double chance in the finals, so they will be giving it a fair crack this weekend against a side they haven’t beaten in the past 4 seasons. Kerr will be rested after a bruising sling tackle, but in comes Yo Mama McGinnity who is capable of playing a solid game when his football does the talking.

In the past two weeks Brisbane have at least shown their coach Michael Voss that there is still some fire in the belly with a win over the Gold Coast backed up with taking it up to the reigning premiers Collingwood in last round’s game.

That saying West Coast are a complete team at the moment and will not let dismal record at the Gabba affect the way they play.

West Coast by 15 points

Adelaide v Richmond

14th v 12th Sunday AAMI Stadium,
Last time: Richmond 15.10 (100) d Adelaide 11.14 (80), round 18, 2010 at the MCG

Adelaide Ins: Ivan Maric, Brodie Martin, Ricky Henderson Outs:
Richmond Ins: Matthew White, Ben Nason, Jamie O’Reilly Outs:

Both teams have had a late season revival but as often the case it is too little too late for both teams to see any finals action. It still is quite encouraging to see the Tigers have solid wins over Sydney and Melbourne.

Adelaide meanwhile have won 3 of their past 4 matches and will be home ground favourites going into this round. Scott Thompson for the Croweaters has been in vintage form this season racking up possessions along halfback and if the rest of his team can take his lead the Crows should prevail.

Adelaide by 18 points

Melbourne v Gold Coast

13th v 16th Sunday MCG,
Last time: Melbourne 23.21 (159) d Gold Coast 9.15 (69), round four, 2011 at the Gabba

Melbourne Ins: Tom McNamara, Neville Jetta, Luke Tapscott, Jack Fitzpatrick, Tom McDonald, Daniel Nicholson Outs: Aaron Davey (suspension), Colin Sylvia (suspension), Ricky Petterd (quad)
Gold Coast Ins: Zac Smith, Josh Toy, Brandon Matera, Jack Hutchins, Sam Iles, Josh Caddy, Jacob Gillbee Outs: Josh Fraser (Illness), Joseph Daye, Steven May, Joel Tippett

Melbourne have nothing to play for but pride and possibly for a lot of the players at the Demons – their futures at the club with a huge number of players bound to come under the microscope at season’s end. At leat at the Gold Coast there is a silver lining in their clouds with a lot of players showing the potential to be the teams the Demons should of been by now.

With the game at the MCG at GC’s sluggish starts I’m tipping Melbourne but only just.

Melbourne by 5 points

Essendon v Port Adelaide

8th v 17th Sunday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Essendon 16.10 (106) defeated by Port Adelaide 17.7 (109), round 7, 2010 at Etihad Stadium

Essendon Ins: Ricky Dyson, Tayte Pears, Cale Hooker, Michael Hurley, Travis Colyer Outs: Heath Hocking (suspension), Stewart Crameri (shoulder)
Port Adelaide Ins: Brett Ebert, Matthew Broadbent, Jason Davenport, Aaron Young, Cameron O’Shea Outs: Cameron Hitchcock, Ben Jacobs (ankle)

Lets keep it brutally simple here – Esssendon are desperate for a win after last week’s thrashing by West coast and simply must to stay afloat in the top eight, Port Adelaide are looking forward to Mad Monday.

Essendon by 53 points

Expect some closer games this round with a cracker tonight to kickstart round 22, Blues v Hawks.

Carlton v Hawthorn

4th v 3rd Friday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Hawthorn 16.14 (110) d Carlton 8.12 (60), round nine, 2010 at Etihad Stadium

Carlton Ins: Michael Jamison Outs: Zach Tuohy
Hawthorn Ins: No Change Outs: No Change

It’s no easy road to the finals for the Blues, while they might be sitting in 4th at the moment their last few games of the regular season this

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/2011-afl-round-twenty-two-tips/cyril-rioli/"rel="attachment wp-att-5687" >
Can Cyril Rioli and the Hawks do enough to beat Carlton when 3rd takes on 4th in a blockbuster Friday night game.

one and the Saints the following week will really test them. Hawthorn haven’t played the hardest of teams coming off their bye but 4 wins in a row is nothing to sneeze at, and if they can carry some momentum into their last few games they will be well set for a strong finals campaign.

The Challenger cup – both teams are breathing down the neck of the top 2 Collingwood and Geelong and look like the only other alternatives to challenge for a Grand Final. The Blues with a bye next week must win to at least hold out for fourth place from the Eagles. Both teams are on fire in terms of form but the likes of Cyril Rioli, Buddy, Sammy Mitchell tearing things up and some handy cameos from most of their playing group the Hawks look a better attacking option.

Hawthorn by 12 points

Gold Coast v Adelaide

16th v 14th Saturday Gold Coast Stadium,
Last time: Adelaide 20.10 (130) d Gold Coast 9.19 (73), round eight, 2011 at AAMI Stadium

Gold Coast Ins: Karmichael Hunt, Luke Russell, Rory Thompson, Tom Hickey, Joel Tippett, Nathan Ablett Outs: Zac Smith (rested), Nathan Krakouer, Joseph Daye, Charlie Dixon, Joel Wilkinson, Tom Lynch (back)
Adelaide Ins: Richard Douglas, Ben Rutten, David Mackay, Kurt Tippett Outs: Chris Knights (quad), Ivan Maric, Ricky Henderson (groin), Brodie Smith

The Gold Coast have had an admiral season and have something to build on for next year, but Adelaide don’t look as promising after a disappointing season in all areas.

Since the Crows axed Neil Craig or visa versa, they have won 2 games they should of always won and got close to beating Geelong which is surprising. With a lot of players for Adelaide playing for their futures and trying to impress potential future coaches, they won’t be bothered about playing up in Queensland where they had great success against Brisbane a few rounds back.

Gold Coast kicked themselves out of contention with some woeful kicking for goals last week and have been making a habit of being hugely inaccurate in front of the big sticks.

Adelaide by 23 points

West Coast v Essendon

5th v 7th Saturday Patersons Stadium,
Last time: Essendon 16.10 (106) d West Coast 12.18 (90), round 7, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

West Coast Ins: Darren Glass, Beau Waters Outs: Mitch Brown, Patrick McGinnity (suspension)
Essendon Ins: Nathan Lovett-Murray, David Myers, Tom Bellchambers Outs: Ricky Dyson, Tayte Pears (soreness), Michael Hurley (soreness)

A real pre finals final with both teams having strong rivalries in recent years. The similarities in the Eagles and Essendon’s start to the year makes this match an interesting comparison to see just how much both have improved as the season has gone on. With the experience of Glass and Waters to return for the Eagles, Patrick ‘Yo Mamma’ Mc Ginnity won’t be missed too much.

The Eagles also have a huge advantage at home with their last loss being round 3 against Sydney. Attacking wise the Bombers are definitely an exiting team to watch but defensively they seem to let through as many goals if not the same. The Eagles should prevail at home.

West Coast by 15 points

  North Melbourne v Fremantle

10th v 9th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Fremantle 18.19 (127) d North Melbourne 14.14 (98), round four, 2011 at Patersons Stadium

North Ins: Lachlan Hansen, Nathan Grima, Aaron Mullett Outs: Robert Tarrant (Knee), Cameron Richardson, Shaun Atley
Fremantle Ins: David Mundy, Rhys Palmer, Adam McPhee, Jayden Pitt Outs: Paul Duffield, Clancee Pearce, Peter Faulks, Nick Lower

Another crunch time game with Fremantle needing to keep their slender chances of a finals berth alive and the same applies to the Kangaroos also needing to win every game from here on. The Dockers have now gone cold with 4 losses in a row at the wrong time of the year and are barely treading water to remain in the hunt for a top 8 spot.

An injury list of 14 players has tested the Docker’s shallow quality player depth and now they face a Kanga’s team who have enough grit and determination to fight this one out. North are coming off a bye and two losses before that, but against better teams (Carlton, Hawthorn) they have shown enough that says they can beat a declining Docker’s outfit.

North Melbourne by 7 points

   Collingwood v Brisbane

1st v 15th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Brisbane Lions 13.10 (88) d Collingwood 11.14 (80), round 10, 2010, at the Gabba

Collingwood Ins: Alan Toovey, Lachlan Keeffe, Ben Sinclair, Tom Young Outs: Nick Maxwell (Thumb), Ben Johnson (Soreness), Sharrod Wellingham (Groin), Luke Rounds
Brisbane Ins: Daniel Rich Outs: James Hawksley

Collingwood just keep on impressing with a strong showing against challengers the Saints last week and are now eyeing their 13th straight win, against a Brisbane side full of confident winning last round’s Banana Bender Cup.

The Lions may have won their last game but there isn’t much to cheer about with that being their only win in four matches, a big plus is the inclusion of Dan Rich this week but I can’t see Brisbane making a dent on the scoreboard.

Collingwood by 46 points

Sydney v St Kilda

8th v 6th Sunday ANZ Stadium,
Last time: St Kilda 15.6 (96) d Sydney Swans 13.10 (88), round 1, 2010 at ANZ Stadium

Sydney Ins: Nick Malceski, Jesse White, Mark Seaby, Gary Rohan, Matt Spangher Outs: Tadhg Kennelly, Lewis Roberts-Thomson (calf)
St Kilda Ins: Steven Baker, Tom Lynch, Ryan Gamble Outs: No Change

The Swans have lost 3 out of their last four matches with 2 losses in a row and desperately need to keep the wolves at bay with a strong reply against a St Kilda team marching strongly into finals action with 4 wins from their past 5 games.

Another pre final final with Sydney desperate for a win to stop their losing streak but facing the Saints at ANZ stadium is going to be a tough ask. Just like their last clash expect another tight result with both teams a mirror defensively of each other.

St Kilda by 3 points

Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs

17th v 12th Sunday AAMI Stadium,
Last time: Western Bulldogs 12.11 (83) d Port Adelaide 7.5 (47), round 16, 2010 at TIO Stadium

Port Ins: Dean Brogan, Daniel Motlop, Daniel Stewart, Tom Logan, Cameron O’Shea Outs: Kane Cornes, Nick Salter (calf)
Bulldogs Ins: Jarrad Grant, Ayce Cordy, Jason Tutt, Patrick Veszpremi, Ed Barlow Outs: Dale Morris (leg), Ben Hudson

Port Adelaide have been woeful with a 165 point loss the exclamation mark on a really sub par season, but will be hoping for some glimmer of hope against an Eadeless Bulldogs’ squad. Back in round 16 I thought Port were a chance to win against the Dogs but not saying the Doggies are any better since then but Port Adelaide are a mess eyeing up beating last year’s record of 9 straight losses, with a 10th this week they should break it.

Western Bulldogs by 53 points

      Melbourne v Richmond

11th v 13th Sunday MCG,
Last time: Melbourne 17.16 (118) d Richmond 13.13 (91), round 14, 2011 at the MCG

Melbourne Ins: Brad Green, Jamie Bennell, Neville Jetta, Liam Jurrah Outs: Luke Tapscott (soreness)
Richmond Ins: Matthew White, Jeromey Webberley, Ben Nason, Jamie O’Reilly Outs: Jake Batchelor (shoulder)

The Demons must be hoping for a quick end to season 2011 with last week’s lost to the Eagles making it 4 in a row, meanwhile the Tigers will be full of beans with a stunning win over Sydney last round. a potentially close battle depending on what Demons team shows up but with the inclusion of Green, Bennell, Jetta and Jurrah it should help Melbourne’s cause.

Richmond looked impressive last week against a Sydney team desperate for a win and need to show consistency here, with a back to back win here to give them some hope for the future. Bachar Houli and Brett Deledio have been outstanding and if Big Jack can kick away the Tiges should do enough to warrant a win.

Richmond by 16 points

Geelong Bye

With some big margins in recent rounds, the chance for a close Round 21 Friday night clash St Kilda v Collingwood is much anticipated.

St Kilda v Collingwood

1st v 6th Friday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Collingwood 16.12 (108) d St Kilda 7.9 (51), round 11, 2011 at the MCG

St Kilda Ins: Zac Dawson Outs: Ryan Gamble
Collingwood Ins: Heritier O’Brien,Sharrad Wellingham Outs: Cameron Wood, Simon Buckley

Grand Final replay take two and a much more settled Saints side takes on a Collingwood outfit that has only fallen once this season. (Way back in Rnd 8 against Geelong) The Saints are seemingly reborn after a nightmare first half of the season and have been on a roll since round 15 winning their last 6 games and now face their 3rd Friday night clash in 4 weeks.

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/2011-afl-round-twenty-one-tips/cjones/"rel="attachment wp-att-5649" >
Can the Saints capitalise on recent form and upset the Magpies tonight?

Collingwood made light work of Port Adelaide and will be relishing this chance to take on more challenging opponents in the lead up to finals. The Magpies have a depth of players to choose from and will be bolstered by the return of Harry O’Brien. Developing players Alex Fasolo and Luke Rounds have been exciting to watch but Malthouse will have to make the tough decision to squeeze them in with the return of Didak and Dawes eminent.

St Kilda’s main culprits Goddard, Dal Santo, Milne have been in scintillating form but it is the quiet achievers like Clint Jones and Farren Ray who have played important support roles when needed. Can they step and challenge Collingwood? Definitely but can they win I’m not so sure.

Collingwood by 23 points

Hawthorn v Port Adelaide

2nd v 17th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Hawthorn 15.14 (104) d Port Adelaide 10.12 (72), round 7, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

Hawthorn Ins:Chance Bateman, Ryan Schoenmakers, Cameron Bruce Outs: Rick Ladson (Soreness), Michael Osborne (Soreness), Kyle Cheney
Port Adelaide Ins: Alipate Carlile, Troy Chaplin, Jacob Surjan, Matt Thomas, David Rodan, Jay Schulz, John Butcher, Thomas Jonas Outs: Chad Cornes (Retired), Brett Ebert, Michael Pettigrew, Hamish Hartlett (Shoulder), Jason Davenport, Daniel Stewart, Jasper Pittard (Glute), Cameron O’Shea

The Hawks are going from strength to strength after their bye and there is now sign of slowing down against Port this week. Last round then challenged against the Roos, Hawthorn lifted and although not convincing still held out for a win. Sammy Mitchell could be doing a Corey McKernan this year at the Brownlows with his form and on field leadership a key to the brown and gold’s success.

Port were woeful last week and Matty Primus has got out the broom and made sweeping changes this round but the result will still be a hiding to nothing.

Hawthorn by 56 points

Fremantle v Carlton

9th v 4th Saturday Patersons Stadium,
Last time: Fremantle 13.15 (93) d Carlton 13.9 (87) round 22, 2010 at Patersons Stadium

Fremantle Ins:Ryan Crowley, Aaron Sandilands, Peter Faulks Outs: Kepler Bradley (Groin), Dylan Roberton, Adam McPhee (Suspension)
Carlton Ins: Andrew Carrazzo, Dennis Armfield Outs: Ryan Houlihan, Brock McLean

It might be a case of too little too late for Fremantle, who showed some fight last week against the Saints in their loss, but the week before couldn’t find the courage pills in their home game against the Hawks.Slipping out of the eight Fremantle have to win their remaining games just to have a chance of scraping by, but facing Carlton this week is a tough ask.

The Blues showed they are equal to the task of dismantling a Demon team already in shambles and they showed that killer instinct that is needed in the one sided matches. We all know Judd is a jet but Marc Murphy with younger legs has the acceleration and Bryce Gibbs is a ball magnet. And the always underrated Andrew Walker has been marking and kicking goals to be the Blues’ leading forward.

Bigtoes Sandilands comes back into the side as Harvey gets desperate but he has to be happy with Tendai Mzungu‘s game last week, as the Dockers will need a repeat of his efforts if they are to win.

Carlton by 18 points

Western Bulldogs v Essendon

12th v 8th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Essendon 16.17 (113) d Western Bulldogs 8.10 (58), round one, 2011, at Etihad Stadium

Bulldog Ins:Shaun Higgins, Dale Morris, Christian Howard, Lukas Markovic, Nathan Djerrkura Outs: Tom L. Williams (Foot), James Mulligan, Andrew Hooper, Justin Sherman (Foot), Ed Barlow
Essendon Ins: Tayte Pears Outs: Michael Ross

The Bulldogs welcomed their bye last round just to stop the rot of 3 successive losses in a row and will looking to rebound against the Bombers, who just snuck past the Swans for a 1 point win. The Bulldogs ahve left their run a little too late but with battered and bruised bodies will be aiming to keep faint finals hopes alive.

The Bombers are treading water in the top 8 and need a win just to keep a float. On form and fight the Bombers look the best.

Essendon by 14 points

Brisbane v Gold Coast

15th v 16th Saturday Gabba,
Last time: Gold Coast 18.16 (124) d Brisbane Lions 17.14 (116), round seven, 2011 at the Gabba

Brisbane Ins:Josh Drummond, Matt Maguire, Mitchell Golby Outs: Joel Patfull (Hand), Amon Buchanan, Josh Dyson
Gold Coast Ins: Gary Ablett, Joseph Daye, Charlie Dixon, Matt Shaw, Dion Prestia Outs: Hayden Jolly, Rory Thompson (Illness), Daniel Harris (Groin), Campbell Brown (Pelvis), Jeremy Taylor (Groin)

Pineapple Cup take 2 first time round the new kids on the block got bragging rights but the simmering grudges between this new rivalry could last decades. The Lions probably should have won last week but complacency led to Adelaide coming back into the game and snatching a 5 point win.

The GC are still getting a resounding beating each week but show more fight than a Melbourne/Port Adelaide team combined. Brisbane should win on form but there’s not much between 15th and 16th.

Brisbane by 12 points

Melbourne v West Coast

11th v 5th Sunday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: West Coast 15.16 (106) d Melbourne 6.16 (52), round 6, 2011 at Patersons Stadium

Melbourne Ins:Mark Jamar, Colin Sylvia, Cale Morton, Sam Blease, Tom McDonald, Daniel Nicholson Outs: Matthew Bate, James Strauss (Leg), Jordan Gysberts (Schapoid)
West Coast Ins: Eric Mackenzie, Josh Kennedy, Bradd Dalziell, Brad Sheppard, Ashton Hams Outs: Darren Glass (Soreness), Matthew Rosa (Knee)

The Demons were looking for redemption last round after a soul searching week with upheaval aplenty behind closed, somewhat ajar doors down at the Melbourne clubrooms. Instead it was much of the same with Carlton handing them a 76 point thrashing.

West Coast were expected to win against Richmond and did so quite easily and to keep their top four chances alive they will be eyeing up a big victory over the Demons.

West Coast by 45 points

Richmond v Sydney

14th v 7th Sunday MCG,
Last time: Sydney Swans 9.21 (75) d Richmond 9.11 (65), round 12, 2011 at the SCG

Richmond Ins:Matthew White, Jayden Post, Jeromey Webberley, Jake Batchelor Outs: Reece Conca (Leg)
Sydney Ins: Paul Bevan, Jarrad McVeigh, Brett Meredith, Mark Seaby Outs: Nick Malceski

Richmond had a promising start to the season but maybe being a young team has taken a toll with the talent and potential still there but the Tiges look a little battle weary. Sydney are well conditioned against tough matches, so much so that it is almost like a trademark of their style as seen in last week’s 1 point loss to the Bombers.

Sydney will be looking to hold steady in the top eight and usually don’t lose the important matches.

Sydney by 36 points

Adelaide v Geelong

14th v 7th Sunday AAMI,
Last time: Adelaide 10.13 (73) lost to Geelong 19.11 (125), round 14, 2011 at Skilled Stadium

Adelaide Ins:Shaun McKernan, Luke Thompson, Richard Tambling Outs: none
Geelong Ins: Shannon Byrnes, Corey Enright, Brad Ottens, Steven Motlop, Daniel Menzel, Nathan Vardy Outs: Darren Milburn (Achilles), Matthew Scarlett (Knee), Tom Hawkins (Calf)

Adelaide only had to have their coach resign to inspire to a win away from home up in Brisbane, it’s that type of season the Crows are having after a season to forget it’s going to be hard work against a Cats team who has handed out some pastings in recent weeks.

Geelong by 72 points

North Melbourne Bye

It's the pointy end of the season and amongst the hiring and firing there is actually games of football this weekend, Round 20 begins tonight Saints v Dockers.

St Kilda v Fremantle

7th v 8th Friday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: St Kilda 15.12 (102) d Fremantle 7.14 (56), round 10, 2011 at Patersons Stadium

St Kilda Ins: Jason Blake, Nick Riewoldt Outs: Tom Lynch, Zac Dawson (suspension)
Fremantle Ins:Luke McPharlin, Clayton Hinkley, Kepler Bradley, Nick Suban Outs: Ryan Crowley, Rhys Palmer (Ankle), Matthew de Boer (Knee), Jack Anthony

It’s crunch time for the Dockers after their self destructive loss last week to the Hawks, the freo faithful will be hoping for a win at a ground the Dockers are yet to play at this year.

<a href="http://www.kick2kick.net/afl/2011-afl-round-twenty-tips/mcpharlrd8s246-2/"rel="attachment wp-att-5611" >
The Dockers need a rebounding win to stay a float in the top 8 tonight.

The Saints are on one hell of a winning streak with their most significant victory being over West Coast and it looks like they have recaptured their best form after a dismal start to the year. If Nick Riewodlt can get amongst the goals tonight St Kilda should beat the Dockers who have been pretty disappointing of late.

St Kilda by 18 points

Geelong v Gold Coast

2nd v 16th Saturday Skilled Stadium,
Last time: Geelong 21.13 (139) d Gold Coast 10.13 (73), round 10, 2011 at Metricon Stadium

Geelong Ins: Josh Hunt, James Podsiadly Outs: Corey Enright (soreness), Brad Ottens (knee)
Gold Coast Ins:Daniel Harris, Sam Iles, Joel Wilkinson, Seb Tape Outs: Karmichael Hunt (illness), Gary Ablett (hamstring), Matt Shaw, Dion Prestia (achilles)

Geelong absolutely smashed Melbourne last week but what was most impressive about the demolition was the fact the Cats never took their foot off the accelerator. It was a perfect game for old man Mooney to kick 5 goals and Stevie J was sublime with his 7 goals, not to mention Joel Selwood‘s day out with 43 possessions.

Gold Coast may be sitting lower than the Dees on the table but they are a young team with heart rather than a team full of passengers. That saying it should’nt be hard work for the Cats.

Geelong by 62 points

Carlton v Melbourne

4th v 11th Saturday MCG,
Last time: Carlton 13.15 (93) d Melbourne 6.10 (46), round 10, 2011 at the MCG

Carlton Ins: Aaron Joseph Outs: Ryan Houlihan
Melbourne Ins:Clint Bartram, Aaron Davey, Tom Scully, Max Gawn, Joel Macdonald Outs: Mark Jamar (Foot), Colin Sylvia, Addam Maric, Liam Jurrah, Daniel Nicholson

The Blues are continuing to win with West Coast breathing down their back and now face a down and out Melbourne team with no coach.

It will be interesting to make comparisons between this game and Melbourne’s last for a number of reasons. If the Blues are to be serious contenders for the flag this year they need to show the same intent and drive Geelong showed last weekend.

Melbourne also need to make a statement on the field as there is plenty of distractions behind the scenes, it would be good to see that the Demon players can show a bit of spirit even if it is too little too late.

Carlton by 45 points

Essendon v Sydney

9th v 6th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: Sydney Swans 14.14 (98) d Essendon 13.15 (93), round 2, 2011 at ANZ Stadium

Essendon Ins: Dustin Fletcher, Heath Hocking, Michael Hurley Outs: Tom Bellchambers, Brent Prismall (knee), Travis Colyer (foot)
Sydney Ins:No change Outs: No change

A must win for Essendon with 2 heavy defeats coming from top 4 sides, they now have a chance to push for a top eight spot if they can get over the line against Sydney.

The Swans had a bye last round but the week before that came out of the blocks guns blazing to resoundingly thrash a Bulldog’s outfit that some favoured to win. Just like this game the Swans may go in not as favourites even though they are the higher ranked team. I do think however with the Don’s backs to the wall they have the character and determination to win this one.

Essendon by 21 points

Port Adelaide v Collingwood

17th v 1st Saturday AAMI Stadium,
Last time: Collingwood 24.11 (155) d Port Adelaide 12.8 (80), round one, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

Port Adelaide Ins: Daniel Stewart, Jasper Pittard Outs: Tom Logan (foot), Jay Schulz (foot/back)
Collingwood Ins:Alan Didak, Dale Thomas, Cameron Wood, Luke Rounds Outs: Harry O’Brien (knee), Brent Macaffer, Lachlan Keeffe, Ben Sinclair

Two teams literally at polar opposites to each other with Collingwood sitting pretty on top of the heap and Port Adelaide just being pretty ugly in general.

Collingwood by 65 points

Brisbane v Adelaide

15th v 14th Sunday Gabba,
Last time: Brisbane Lions 15.11 (101) d Adelaide 8.13 (61), round 10, 2011 at AAMI Stadium

Brisbane Ins: Ryan Harwood, Josh Dyson, Rohan Bewick Outs: No Change
Adelaide Ins:Myke Cook, Tony Armstrong, Shaun McKernan, Luke Thompson Outs: David Mackay (knee)

The only thing that stopped Brisbane from losing last week was a bye but they now face a Crows team angry for a number of reasons ( no coach, no Phil Davis ), but I don’t even think that could produce a win for Adelaide up in Queensland.

Brisbane by 27 points

Hawthorn v North Melbourne

3rd v 10th Sunday Aurora Stadium,
Last time: Hawthorn 10.10 (70) defeated by North Melbourne 12.10 (82) round 5, 2010 at Aurora Stadium

Hawthorn Ins: Luke Hodge, Jordan Lisle, Will Sierakowski, Cameron Bruce Outs: Xavier Ellis (soreness)
North Melbourne Ins:Lindsay Thomas, Cruize Garlett, Jamie Macmillan, Shaun Atley Outs: Leigh Adams (knee)

Hawthorn showed that rain, hail or shine and without their usual suspects starring ( Buddy going scoreless ) they can battle it out for a tough win like they did last week against the Dockers. It’s positive signs when in trying conditions in supposedly a tough away game, the Hawks brought their ‘A’ game.

North Melbourne have been in solid form and seem to be headed for a top 8 chance but against the better teams like last week against Carlton, they just can’t match it.

Hawthorn by 34 points

West Coast v Richmond

5th v 13th Sunday Patersons Stadium,
Last time: Richmond 19.12 (126) d West Coast 11.11 (77), round 12, 2010 at the MCG

West Coast Ins: Daniel Kerr, Brett Jones Mitch Brown, Chris Masten, Nic Naitanui, Bradd Dalziell, Brad Sheppard Outs: Beau Waters (elbow), Thomas Swift, Scott Lycett
Richmond Ins:Mitchell Farmer, Matt Dea, Jeromey Webberley, Shaun Grigg, Brad Miller Outs: Chris Newman (Knee), Jake Batchelor (shoulder)

West Coast avoided another final quarter fadeout to just get over the line against the Bulldogs after only just pipping the Dockers the round before. Still the Eagles have 7 wins from their last 8 outings and no one could of predicted how well they would of gone this year, even surpassing the most optimistic of their supporters’ opinions.

Richmond are barely treading water and recorded their 7th loss from their last 8 games and will be hoping for a glimmer of a chance that West Coast continue their trend of final quarter fadeouts.

West Coast by 55 points

Western Bulldogs Bye

Last week our tipster got 8 correct, however round 19 is a new weekend so lets focus on the winners. Make sure you read to find out who will win and why between North/ Carlton, Geelong/ Melbourne, West Coast/ Doggies, Gold Coast/ St Kilda, Fremantle/ Hawthorn, Collingwood/ Essendon and the Showdown Port and Adelaide.

Our normal expert tipster fresh from 8 on the weekend had a big week getting his free burger from the Kick2Kick tipping competition and is now sick – serves him right! So I will try and live up to his high success rate and give you the winners for the weekend.

Fremantle & Hawthorn play in the game of the round where a loss will have big consequences in their fight to play finals in two consecutive years.

North Melbourne v Carlton

10th v 4th Friday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: North Melbourne 14.13 (97) d Carlton 10.8 (68)

Kangaroos Ins: Ben Cunnington Outs: Ben Warren
Carlton’s Ins:Ryan Houlihan, Brock McLean Outs: Ed Curnow, Wayde Twomey

North Melbourne get their chance to show the AFL public what they are capable off, earlier this week we discussed whether they should get more Friday night football. However every time they have had the opportunity to show they can play with the big boys, they get spanked… North cannot afford that if they want to play finals for 2011.

Carlton also cannot afford to loose if they want the double finals chance with them fighting to keep 4th spot against the Eagles. Their midfield is strong, in fact according to Brad Scott the best in today’s competition. Norths midfield generally is slow but with Bastinac and Wells giving Harvey a chop out and in form I see them capable of challenging Judd and co.

To me the game will be won or lost in the forward line. If Drew Petrie fires, North wins – however if Betts and Gartlett fire, it will be a Carlton win.

Carlton win by 28 points

Geelong v Melbourne

2nd v 11th Saturday Skilled Stadium
Last time: Geelong 18.13 (121) d Melbourne 10.7 (67)

Geelong’s Ins: Steve Johnson, Cameron Ling, Cameron Mooney, Brad Ottens Outs: Shannon Byrnes (calf), Josh Hunt (back), Josh Cowen, James Podsiadly (soreness)
Melbourne’s Ins: Liam Jurrah Outs: Jamie Bennell

This should be a no brainier – Melbourne have struggled to defeat Geelong for 30 odd years. Geelong look like they are warming up nicely and hopefully someone can challenge Collingwood come finals time and if so Geelong needs to spank Melbourne!

Geelong win by 56 points

Western Bulldogs v West Coast Eagles

12th v 5th Saturday Etihad Stadium,
Last time: West Coast 26.19 (175) d Western Bulldogs 8.4 (52)

Western Bulldogs Ins: Ryan Hargrave, Robert Murphy, Brennan Stack, James Muligan, Jordan Roughead, Justin Sherman, Ed Barlow Outs: Dylan Addison, Adam Cooney (knee), Lindsay Gilbee, Shaun Higgins (knee), Jarrad Grant, Lukas Markovic, Nathan Djerrkura (Achilles)
West Coast Eagles Ins: Thomas Swift, Scott Lycett Outs: Josh Kennedy (eye), Nic Naitanui (soreness)

The Dogs have sacked a third of their side which is a big number in today’s competition – injuries have been cruel for the Dogs in 2011 however this week they see some handy inclusions with Hargrave, Murphy, Roughead and Sherman coming back in.

West Coast also have some injury concerns with Daniel Kerr still missing and Nic Naitanui and Josh Kennedy missing this week with injuries – Josh will never play cricket again! Last time West Coast smashed the Dogs and I expect Shuey and LeCras to have big games rotating through the forward line and midfield.

This will be a roughie for the Dogs to sneak an upset but West Coast should win especially if they are to be a genuine top 4 side.

West Coast win by 25 points

Gold Coast v St Kilda

16th v 8th Saturday GC Stadium
Last time: first meeting

Gold Coasts Ins: Karmichael Hunt, Hayden Jolly, Steven May, Jeremy Taylor Outs: Josh Toy, Rex Liddy, Sam Iles (hip), Joel Wilkinson
St Kilda’s Ins: Tom Lynch Outs: Nick Riewoldt (suspension)

St Nick misses out playing at home, if he was that desperate maybe he should have moved up their with Gary instead or learn that you cannot hit a guy in the face and break his jaw – I wonder if he will be the new ‘Velvet Sledge Hammer’?

St Kilda have a soft draw and I expect them to add to their percentage and cement their spot in the top 8. It has taken 18 rounds but coach Ross Lyon was correct when he said he was looking to add scoring to their game plan!

St Kilda win by 61 points

Fremantle v Hawthorn

7th v 3rd Saturday Patersons Stadium
Last time: Hawthorn 17.9 (111) d Fremantle 13.11 (89)

Fremantle’s Ins: Rhys Palmer, Jack Anthony Outs: Luke McPharlin (suspension), Nick Suban (soreness)
Hawthorn’s Ins: Matt Suckling Outs: Shane Savage (shoulder)

Last weeks loss to the Eagles hurt Fremantle’s chances of making the finals. They have one of the toughest draws and this is another 8 point game – loose and they are 2 games (due to their poor percentage) from the 5th-6th spot and will struggle to play finals for the second consecutive time for the first time in their poor club history. Win and they are still alive…

Interesting to see Jack Anthony play his second game for Fremantle – wonder if its an attempt to stretch Hawthorns defense?

I am looking forward to seeing the battle between Silvagni and Franklin. If Silvagni was in a Victorian team, he would be a star! Hawthorn should win this.

Hawthorn win by 18 points

Collingwood v Essendon

1st v 9th Sunday MCG
Last time: Collingwood 16.11 (107) d Essendon 11.11 (77)

Collingwoods Ins: Dayne Beams, Luke Rounds, Darren Jolly, Ben Sinclair, Kirk Ugle Outs: Cameron Wood, John McCarthy
Essendons Ins: Jobe Watson, Andrew Walsh, Tom Bellchambers, Alex Browne, Michael Ross Outs: Tayte Pears (knee), Michael Hurley (foot)

Can Essendon do it again and defeat the inform team? They defeated Geelong a month ago however does lightening strike twice? They will have to do it without Michael Hurley which hurts as he is one the few big men that could actually match it against the reigning premiers. Yes I am grasping at straws and trying to make a case for Essendon, however I think this will turn ugly.

Interesting to see Dayne Beams back in the side – wonder why we have not seen him much this year? Maybe he needs to spend less time in the tattoo parlor and spend it on the training track.

Collingwoon win by 85 points

Adelaide v Port Adelaide

14th v 17th Sunday AAMI Stadium
Last time: Port Adelaide 14.14 (98) d Adelaide 9.12 (66)

Adelaide’s Ins: Chris Knights, Ivan Maric, Taylor Walker, Aidan Riley Outs: Brad Symes (jaw)
Port Adelaide’s Ins: Justin Westhoff, Matthew Broadbent, Daniel Stewart Outs:

This is going to be a boring game, lets hope a fight or something happens to spice the game up or it may be another case of most just skipping the game like round 18′s Friday night game.

However lets focus on the positives: ummmm yeh cannot find any, lets just go straight to the tip!

Adelaide win by 12 points

Bye Brisbane, Richmond & Sydney

I wonder if Richmonds coach will watch their last few weeks of average football or if it will also be tossed into the bin?
