The Year It Was

  • Finished: 4th with 15 wins
  • Kick2Kick Season Prediction: top four

What Went Right

I don’t know how Micky and his motley crew of staff do it but they continually recruit good youth without sacrificing their year.

Alan Didak had a great season and like his team mates, needs to be more consistent come finals time.

Alan Didak had a great season and like his team mates, needs to be more consistent come finals time.

While other clubs usually write off a year in an attempt to get the best picks, Collingwood are able to draft very well and pick up a bunch of decent young players. Malthouse does have a habit of recycling players not wanted at other football teams.

This year Leon Davis and Alan Didak together with Dane Swan were able to step it up during the regular season and play significant roles in the midfield.

Malthouse challenged his young and developing side to play key roles in defense and forward and as a result players like Tyson Goldsack, Dayne Beams, Cameron Wood and Steele Sidebottom showed that they are going to be key players in years to come.

Brent Macaffer also looks to be the key forward the Pies have been searching for. Big Lee Brown had a stellar year and as a captain Nick Maxwell showed the leadership that the Coaching staff believed he had when appointing him Skipper.

Defensively Collingwood were solid.

What Went Wrong

An injury to Scott Pendlebury was pretty much the cherry on a very bitter cake for the Pies after a disastrous finals campaign.

Tactically it was a flaw of Malthouse to bring back Anthony Rocca for a swansong and a lot of players went Missing in Action when it really counted.

We all know Davis, Didak and Swan are talented but they need to convert their mercurial best into more consistent efforts come finals time..

The forward line failed for Collingwood this year with Paul Medhurst, Daisy Thomas and Travis Cloke having very average years by their standards.

Player(s) that Stepped Up

Leon Davis had a breakthrough year and rightly so got a All Australian Guernsey. Dane Swan also showed that he is the premier midfielder at the club with an even better season than last year. I was impressed with the whole defensive backline of Collingwood. Simon Prestigiacomo, Harry O’Brien and Nick Maxwell were crucial to the Pies defensively.

Sharrod Wellingham and Jack Anthony together with the other young players showed they are part of the new breed that Buckley can build a premiership around when his time comes to coach them.

Trade Bait/ Goodbye’s

Anthony Rocca says goodbye and is almost certain to join his big brother for some NFL punting duties.

I would like to see either or both Travis Cloke and Josh Fraser traded. Both the club and the players mentioned might benefit from a new lease of life. Both probably are signed or have have signed for the Pies. I think for Collingwood to move forward they need to shed these players they seem to carry. They had all three Cloke brothers for too long and the Magpies have a problem with being too sentimental with certain players (Shaw brothers).

Improvement Needed by

Collectively around finals time the Magpies need to lift. They are a better team than the one that got pumped by Geelong last week.

The forwards in Dale Thomas and Travis Cloke need to shape up or ship out. Dale Thomas in particular needs to rethink his style of play…no longer is he the pinch hitter but Daisy has become their main target up front.

Paul Medhurst needs to take a set shot…and find the form that made him a star in big games like the ANZAC day clash. Alan Didak has the speed and skill and he is a match winner when on fire but he needs to do it week in week out.

Yes Collingwood will make finals but will they be a force? No, not until they get rid of the dead wood including Mike Malthouse will they have a chance of adding to their premierships….

So maybe we should push for Malthouse to stay longer as I am sure the other 15 clubs supporters would not mind :)

Collingwood will never win a flag under Malthouse…there i said it.

even though i do not want collingwood to EVER succeed, i think for their sake Malthouse needs to give up the coaching role at the end of next year and then they will have a chance of a flag in the coming years after next.

but like germ said, i would rather malthouse stay for 10 more years…lol

by the way jermayn…i was thinking maybe you should do a season review in answer to the season’s predictions which included rising star, coleman medalist final 8 and so on, and include everyone who posted their answers and then compare it to what actually happened

@Mike yep I will do that next week after the Grand Final result and we can see who was the best ‘crystal ball predictor’ out of all of us. Good suggestion…
