Delisted Players hanged out to dry

I was looking at this years delistings and I was wondering surely the players that are unlucky and delisted could be told about the knife hanging over their head before the trade week.

Kane Tenace is one of 10+ players who were delisted who could have easily been traded to another club for a low pick

Yes we all know the AFL is a cut throat competition and business, just ask Tasmania who continually get over looked at having an AFL team, just because West Sydney is a safer money business idea. However surely the clubs could show more heart by looking after out of favour players.

The Bulldogs did this with their delistings of Wayde Skipper, Paul O’Shea & Cameron Wight. They told them they will try and find homes for them during the trade week. Richmond and Melbourne told Russel Robbertson, Nathan Brown & Mark Coughlan about their futures before the season finished.

I think this is something that every club should do, just sit them down and say something like “Your likely not going to be on our list next year, so which club would you like us to talk to?”.

I say this because surely some of this years delistings in Robert Shirley, Scott Harding, Kane Tenace, Mitch Thorp, Cameron Cloke, Matt Maguire, Sam Power and Jamie McNamara could all have been traded to another club for a low ‘throw away’ draft pick.

Yes the clubs may not use the picks but surely the benefit of players staying in the game by getting another chance is worth claiming a ‘throw away’ pick. This will also imo keep free agency away which will only ruin the game more.

What do you think? Would you be happy with your club trading your 60 odd pick for a ready made midfielder in Kane Tenace or a big boy in your thin defence in Maguire or a previous top 10 draft pick in Thorp for your forward line? I can think of a Hawthorn who have 3 picks over pick 60 who could do with either a Cloke or Maguire.

And how much good did this do for these particular players? I don’t think any of them found new homes did they? All this did was prove to other clubs that these blokes are no longer of any value. The AFL is a business now and players are used as currency. What would Geelong’s bargaining power have been with Kane Tenace during trade week if they had come out and admitted that he was not a required player. There is a certain amount of smoke and mirrors type action that has to happen, clubs have to pretend that their players are worth something in the HOPE of gaining any sort of valuable commodity from them.

Hawthorn did attempt to trade Mitch Thorp but no interest was shown in him.

@Shugo and Deano, yes the Hawks and Dogs did shop those players around but the question must be asked about the value or cost they had on them. I know the Hawks was not accepting anything less than a 2nd round pick for Thorp and that is probably why no one took a nibble…

Its similar as the Magpies offering a 3rd and 6th round for Luke Ball, gone are the days when you can pull the wool over a club (Freo have smarten up).
