Today we introduce you to another new Kick2Kick writer Craig who will also preview Essendon published on Saturday, 14th March.

This season, in Victoria we have the “Supercoach Blackbook”. Provided by the HeraldSun Supercoach, it details how “experts” advise you on how to set up your team.

For those who play Supercoach, here are some of the dos/don’ts that the booklet advises you to do. It will also help you if you do DreamTeam instead as well.

Select 2 bargain basement players –valued at $120,000 or less- in each position.

Not possible. Why? It also advises you to watch out for the high draft picks. Without giving too much away, I had to put 3 bargains in each position bar the ruck, which has 2 spots. 3 of the 11 are under $120,000.

Selecting players with injuries can be risky.

This is true. One fact I found, purely by accident, was that the more games a player had played the season before, the better the chances are of making a profit on that player. The aim is to get 22 fit players on the park using a mixture of superstars & workhorses.

Is Jarryd Roughead a better pick than Buddy Franklin for your DreamTeam and Supercoach teams?

Is Jarryd Roughead a better pick than Buddy Franklin for your DreamTeam and Supercoach teams?

Fix your midfield first.

Wrong. The forwards are more important to get right in any AFL fantasy competition. The cheapest forward I have in my starting 6 is around $456,000 in “Supercoach” & $362,000 in “Dreamteam”. Forget the Franklins, Riewoldts, etc. In my opinion, Jarryd Roughead is a better buy than Franklin.

Judd, Black, Ablett, Cooney, Bartel, Deledio, etc

Wrong. Like I stated earlier, players need to play 22 games & if you’re prepared to pay $712,000 (Supercoach) for Ablett, you better hope he plays more than the 18 games he played last season.

Simon Black is also classed as depreciated in my opinion. Judd is yet to convince me he’s 100% & Adam Cooney is the luckiest Brownlow winner breathing. I’ve banked on Brett Kirk & Simon Goodwin as my “marquee” signings to lead my “Supercoach” midfield.

Remember, backing the Ablett’s or Judd’s is like putting $100 on every Cup runner Bart Cummings has ever had. You’d end up only $800 in front.

Picking 3 Big Guns

True, but with a twist. Big guns can be defined by price or by earning potential. A Drew Petrie or a Jared Brennan are not as expensive. The big guns are your ammunition that will fight week in & week out at prices more reasonable than “The Big Guns”.

When it comes to Trades

Two words of advice. Don’t Panic!! This is not a sprint but a Melbourne Cup. You have 20 trades to last 22 weeks. You have a bench. If a player gets suspended, try not to dump him. Only in severe cases of injury should you trade early.

My advice?? Try to sit back for 11 weeks & watch your profits grow. You then have 22 trades for the last 11 weeks. You can “max out” every week from then on in.

But, some of us will have itchy trigger fingers & we’ve all been through that before. If you really have to, then sit back & think. Load up the team page, make a coffee, pace the floor a bit & make things sure in your head before you commit “trade sacrifice”.

Finally, remember these 3 rules.

  1. Don’t listen to the “experts”,
  2. treat these games like a stock market &
  3. use the high draft picks as easy return for your dollar.

Meet craigeyles

Born in Warragul, West Gippsland, Victoria. I’m married with 2 beautiful young girls & a cat (Hirdy). One is at school & the other has autism. I support Essendon but I’m not the one-eyed feral type. Played footy for 1 year in under 15s. Was roped in, actually, as my brother was in the team & they were short of players. Terrible team, mind you. Coach had his sons in the midlfield & they were dreadful. What I do?? Not a lot, unfortunately. Cutting a long story short, illness for 24 years this year (ended footy career) & Johnny’s “workplace” laws forced its hand even more. Love to work, but unfortunately part time is the go these days. Now, spend my time doing community radio sports show on Saturdays & wife suggested I build excel programs on sports leagues & other calculations. Enjoy my “twittering” that I recently discovered.

    Great post. Some good tips.

Research research research. that is the key. The amount of resources available out there for dreamteam and supercoach is incredible and the AFL have caught on and are finally giving dreamteam the pump up it deserves.

Nice article. My Dreamteam is slowly coming along, and I find myself continually making changes – almost every time I look at it.

I’ve never got into SuperCoach, but I’ve always had a team. Not this year though – I love my Fantasy leagues but when it comes to SuperCoach, there’s too much thinking to do (effective kicks versus non-effective kicks etc).

To me, a kick is a kick.

So it’s just DreamTeam for me this year.

Again, good work and I look forward to more of your articles.

Thanks for your post Craig, definitely has helped me as I pick my team.

I like the thought of doing your forwards first…
When I first choose my side i did the defenders first especially these days with heaps of possessions in the backline.

For the argument Buddy vs Roughead who lays more tackles (4 points)? I know Buddy probably gives away more free kicks (-3 points) but he does kick more goals. I went for Pavlich as my main forward target, as he plays midfield and tends to get 20+ possessions a game. What are some other forwards???

I also like the idea of saving your trades for the last 10 rounds as thats when you need to make your move.

Also find it interesting that you say not to pick Ablett, Cooney etc and the other top midfielders, I have picked both Ablett & Cooney.

Lastly you say not to listen to the ‘experts’ but you have the experts handbook??

Yes, I do have the “experts handbook”, but it’s a quick & easy guide to every players price. Alot quicker than clicking a mouse several times.

Luckiest Brownlow winner breathing!! Are you for real, the guy wins contested footy, runs and carries, is near perfect by hand and foot and kicks goals, what more do you want, for him to leap buildings in a single bound. He is the best midfielder in a team that was a couple of kicks away from a grand final. Lucky my balls… If shane woewodin is not the worst brownlow winner of all time i don’t know who is…

    re jermayn & other forwards.
for star prices can’t go past Steve Johnson, “Aker” or sneaking Brent Harvey.

  8. Jermayn Says:

Agree that Woewodin was probably the worst brownlow however he did have a good year in 2000 and he is a gero boy (my home town)…

Surprised by you naming Aker as a forward you would choose, guess he is a bit of a “cherry picker” and he does like to kick.

  9. craig eyles Says:

“Aker’s” price is down, yes he’s a year older, but if he plays as good or better, his shorter price is worth the risk.

great post…I agree with big guns…often names like judd, wells, etc are exciting players but are not accumulators…..Simon Black over the the years has been a real ‘Top Gun’ for me and just look at his Brownlow polling.
