Gary Ablett jnr won last night the 2009 Brownlow Medal, most people thought he would win it but he was favourite for the last 3 years and the previous two years he was always left without one. So people were not holding their breath for it to happen this year, even Ablett was unsure 2 rounds left, 7 votes ahead.

Gary Ablett jnr finally wins a brownlow after 3 years of dominance
We always thought one day the umpires would get it right by giving him a Brownlow, he has been good but usually its duds that win it.
Ablett had to win and go against history. The last time someone has won the Brownlow and missed more than 3 games in the last 40 years has been Tony Liberatore when he won the Brownlow in 1990.
Congratulations to Gazza jnr but lets looks at the top 10 as I would like to highlight a few things.
30: Gary Ablett (Geelong)
22: Chris Judd (Carlton)
20: Lenny Hayes (St Kilda)
19: Simon Black (Brisbane Lions), Jonathan Brown (Brisbane Lions)
17: Adam Goodes (Sydney), Nick Dal Santo (St Kilda)
16: Joel Selwood (Geelong)
15: Bryce Gibbs (Carlton), Marc Murphy (Carlton), Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
You want further proof this is a midfielders medal? Nick Riewoldt and Jonathan Brown may have finished in the top 10 but when someone can kick 8 goals and not get a vote surely, it raises a question.
Also disposals mean nothing, proof? Look at Dane Swan, he got the most disposals in a year EVER and he only got 12 votes, just scrapping in the top 20.

everybody knows what i think about gary ablett, but all my personal feelings aside for a moment.
Congratulations to Gary.
However I have a few problems with him winning it, not because he didn’t deserve it, he probably did, but the brownlow voting system has got to be the most unreliable unbelievable system i have ever seen.
THE UMPIRES SHOULD NOT CONTROL WHO THE BROWNLOW GOES TO!!!!
And I’ll tell you why in the article I am writing currently

I think its safe to say he did deserve the Brownlow and to be honest he probably deserved it more than Cooney last year as well.

Well I’ve wiped my fair share of egg off my face, congrats Gazza and well deserved.
I cannot say I agree with removing the voting from the Umpires. Half the “romance” if you will surrounding the Brownlow is that the best player is not always the winner and despite this anomaly there are so many “player of the year” awards in the media including print and radio that the great players get recognised and rewarded handsomely anyway. Taking the voting away from the umpires would further sterilise what is becoming a very sanitised league. But the AFL loves fixing things that aren’t broken so nothing surprises me anymore.

am i clutching at straws by suggesting that the AFL wanted a Cats v Saints GF and a Gary Ablett Brownlow and employed the only people that could make it happen to carry it out???
