The pre season is an important element to any successful competition, not only does it get the fans excited about a new season but it also allows teams to try new players and moves while it allows the AFL to continue to fiddle with the rules of the game. The current pre season is called the NAB which is a major sponsor of the AFL but the Pre Season competition has not always been called that with other sponsors like Ansett and Wizard. The Pre Season cup used to be called the Night Premiership and before 1992 was played during the normal competition and consisted of interstate teams as well.

It is interesting to see that some teams place importance to this competition while many others do not. What else is interesting is that of the 16 plus years only a few of the winners actually played finals that year.

I went to the 92 final at Waverley. Hawthorn killed Fitzroy in the first half, by memory. It was Fitzroy’s last finals appearance at any level.
