The mechanics of the fantasy football competition has evolved over the years. It started in the Australian newspaper with simple rules. You Selected a group of players, each with a score from 2 to 10, with a cap of 140 points. The catch then was no more than 2 players per team. That was pre-stat days.
We then had the original “Dreamteam” competition done over the phone. It had the same scoring system, but was salary cap & trade restriction free. You had a player booklet with positions more defined than the 9 defenders, 8 midfielders, etc. Full Backs, Ruck Rovers, Rovers, etc.
Now, with the advent of the internet, fantasy football has become the rage. This is more evident since former Carlton player, Ted Hopkins, started ChampionData & was the original “Sun newspaper” computer tipster. Now, we not only have the “Dreamteam” in its new form, but “Supercoach“, a game based purely on what I believe is the judgment of ChampionData rather than cold hard stats.
The price side of both games comes from VirtualSports, who assess a players performance on his last 3 games. This leads to some confusion from the fans as it’s difficult to remember how your player performed 3 matches ago & his price goes down after scoring 100+.
Let’s hope the day doesn’t come that the rules, like the US, place our designated leagues into a restricted draft system instead of the freedoms we have to select anybody.
