i don't think weight has a lot to do with it jimmy. We have a guy with a great big gut on our team and he can kick it well over 65 meters. He can actually kick it 50 metres with one step!!! The key is he has such great purchase of the footy.

when I kick the ball tends to land on the ankle joint rather than the toe of my boot. I kick straight but up and with hardly any penetration?

I just started AFL and i've been told i have a good tackle so im gonna tell you what i think.

DONT BE SCARED.

I dont see the guy with the ball as a 'player', i see him as roadblock. As in, i sprint as fast and hard as i can at, not the guy, but the ball, the guy is just there to slow me down enough to pick up the ball, the harder i hit him the more chance there is that the roadblock will get out of the way of teh ball. Of course i dont wanna stop the car and put it in reverse so i dont tackle head high or endanger the person. If your scared your gonna get hurt put it this way, if you tackle them hard they're gonna be afraid to tackle you back, less tackles, less injuries. =)

People see a tackle as kind of the endgame for the 2 players, once you tackle the guy with the ball it is NOT over for you, get up and chase, dont put your hard work in the bin by letting the opponent pick it up again.

Watch the hips they show where the roadblock truly inends to go!

@Andrew!
Thanks for your comment and you are 110% correct in saying that you must follow the hips when tackling, they are the true identification of direction where the person is going.

We will be adding more skills and coaching tips in the off season and this will definitely be one of them. If you would like to help in anyway, please feel free to do so.

To do a goo tackle you should watch their hips because people dont turn of walk without turning their hips. so if you are facing them you should watch around their stomach area.

@sammy - Thanks for your question and I hope I can answer your question in some way.

I think the number one suggestion would be to practice, practice and practice.

When pressure is upon you as you kick, the true nature of the kick comes out, so I would suggest you take your kicking action back to the basics and break down the various stages of your kick. Video tape it, watch it in the mirror etc.

In regards to your questions:
1) I would not think you push the ball onto your foot as that will most likely cause even more problems. Kicking needs to become a natural action, like breathing or eating.

2) The bottom 1/3 of the ball on a roughly 45 degree angle hits the boot in the middle between the shoe laces and edge of the boot.

3) The best way to control the ball is by your guiding hand (ie: left hand for left kicks and right for right kicks).

I need urgent help with kicking an afl football. i can kick fine while standing i.e accurately and directly. but under any sort of pressure and on the run, my kicks spin backwards too much and there isnt penetration on them and they are up and under kicks. also, when i kick it on the run or under any sort of pressure, i notice that they hit the end of my boot. I desperatly need to know how to control the ball with you're hand on the run that is, how do u hold it? do u push down on the football?? what angle should the ball land on ur foot?? how to control the ball all the way to ur foot etc. Thanks
