Melbourne Demons 2011 Season Review

Posted on 13 September 2011 by

It was a season to forget for the oldest AFL club as they lost their coach, one of their best players and the club continues to be rocked with controversial’s after controversial. It is not a happy club down at Demon land, no wonder why Tom left… If you would like to help out by writing your own sides season review, please contact me.

Jack Watts has improved but Melbourne needs a cultural change, a coach with guts and a key crash and bash forward for season 2012

The only way this year can be deemed as somewhat of a success is if they manage to get a coach like Ross Lyon or Mick Malthouse. At the time of writing Lyon was foremost in their vision and he would crack this over rated and under performed list that has potential but we all know, potential means nothing. St Kilda got to three Grand Finals on work ethic and failed in 2004-2006 when the team was purely based on potential.

After removing seasoned players in 2012, it was another year of giving debuts to kids Tom McDonald, Max Gawn, Michael Evans, Sam Blease, Daniel Nicholson, Jeremy Howe and Luke Tapscott while Brett Moloney had an up and down season on and off field but when he is switched on, he is captain material and through him and Trengrove, Marric and Jones Melbourne has a solid midfield with their defense. This leaves the issue on their forward line…

Jack Watts improved a lot in season 2011 but you get the feeling that while Nic Naitunai is around he will always be under pressure about being picked ahead of him. While he has added some bulk and size to his body, he is not a crash and bash Jon Brown CHF type and this is what Melbourne needs. They have an exciting forward line with Jeremy Howe, Brad Green, Liam Jurrah, Jack Watts and others floating through but apart from Watts they are all under sized. Jack Gunston has promise and while I am unsure if he is the answer surely he could be worth a look at.

Trade Bait

Matthew Warnock: Has requested a trade and maybe a swap for him (and a pick) for Jack Gunston to Adelaide could benefit both sides.
Matthew Bate: This kid has guts and a great work ethic but maybe he and Petterd have fallen behind the likes of Howe but I expect him and Petterd to be looked at by clubs who want handy 20-30 goal 3rd tall forwards. I can think of Essendon, Richmond and interstate clubs Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Gold Coast who could be interested in either.
