Besides the obvious question of whether the Dees can off the bottom of the ladder, another 2 questions come to mind.

Will Trengove and Scully be in your Dreamteam?
- Will there be some noticeable “tanking” in 2010 considering GC17 have from memory the first 4 draft picks??
- Have the Dees got it right at the draft after the perceived failure of Jack Watts compared to the No2 pick Nick Naitanui??
The Dees have the 3rd worst draw in the AFL (0.501) so with that comes absolutely no excuses for their performances this season. They average 981 points with a cost of around $423,400 per player.
Best Buys
Brent Moloney (midfield) $388,600 – Now back to a near full season in 2009, Moloney averaged 88.4. Moloney racked up 30 or more disposals 3 times including career highs of 37 disposals & 25 handballs .vs. Western Bulldogs in round 8.
Not a lot in terms of a bargain, but with his best year in 5 seasons, he can’t be overlooked when fit.
Cale Morton (midfield) $386,000 – Morton had a break out year averaging 87.9 & racked up 30 or more disposals 3 times in 2009 with career highs in every department. Morton is ranked 19th in marks & marks per game, doesn’t mind mixing it with the big boys & can kick a goal.
Arguably the Dees best bargain for mind.
Matthew Bate (forward) $348,200 – Bate averaged 79.2 & equalled his career highs of 4 goals .vs. Western Bulldogs in round 8 & 3 hitouts .vs. Collingwood.
Bate ranked 18th in goal assists per game & 20th in goal assists. He can also take a grab & has a good inside 50 average telling me he can play up the ground.
Joel MacDonald (defence) $299,800 – MacDonald got snaffled in the draft after being used as part of the Fevola deal & averages 68.2.
MacDonald had career highs of 33 disposals & 19 handballs .vs. St Kilda in round 9 & 12 marks .vs. Geelong in round 15.
MacDonald will be out to prove a point in 2010 so watch not only for the player that switches clubs, but the player that switches with added motivation on his mind.
Brad Miller (forward) $275,000 – Miller has a drop in price this season after averaging 62.6, but as a key forward, winning wasn’t in the game plan.
Miller managed to equal a career high 14 marks .vs. Collingwood in round 2 before all this “tank” talk began, so keep him in the back of your minds.
James Frawley (defence) $242,500 – Defenders are difficult to enjoy when your team is on a hiding to nothing, but Frawley is good to watch. Averaging 55.2, Frawley had career highs of 20 disposals .vs. St Kilda in round 22, 14 kicks .vs. Geelong & 11 handballs .vs. Collingwood in round 2.
Frawley also enjoys a run down the ground so a cheap dashing defender is something we’re all looking for.
Risky Best Buys
Brad Green (midfield) $379,700 – Green is an interesting buy. Green only played 12 games in 2009 at an average of 86.4 with 30 disposals & 20 kicks .vs. Hawthorn in round 9.
Whether or not his injury was genuine or part of Dean Bailey’s “tanking” policy, we’ll never fully know, but he’s a good cheap midfield buy.
Lynden Dunn (midfield) $318,700 – Dunn played 13 games in 2009 at an average of 72.5. Arguably Dunn’s best season with career highs of 27 disposals, 11 handballs & 10 marks .vs. St Kilda in round 22 his best performance.
Is this a clue that Dunn’s not a “tanker”? Most coaches believe in momentum so he logically should get selected early.
Adam Maric (forward) $229,200 – Maric averaged 52.2 in just 6 games, but he played against Geelong, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn & a trip to West Coast.
Maric took a career high 7 marks .vs. West Coast & his contributions to goal were more than doubled the 5 his scored in 2009.
Tom McNamara (defence) $209,700 – It’s obvious that the price makers expect something from McNamara in 2010 after averaging 59.7 in 3 games & the retirements of Wheatley & Whelan.
Mcnamara’s best game was the round 21 clash .vs. Carlton & is a disciplined defender who also loves a run down ground. With 16 disposals that game, despite the belting they got, Mcnamara could be a handy grab.
