Port Power’s 2010 Dreamteam Preview

Posted on 26 February 2010 by

I guess the big questions for the Power is all off field?? Can they get out of the black?? Can they build crowds??

The Power have the =4th best draw (0.478) & the battle for that elusive 8th spot will rage on between them, Essendon & Hawthorn.

Kane Cornes may be out of the leadership team still is one of the best buys for Port Adelaide

The Power list averages 983 points @ 65.4 with an average cost of around $284,000 per player.

Best Buys

Kane Cornes (midfield) $418,400 – Now out of the leadership group, Cornes is free to build on his 95.2 from 2009. He racked up 30 or more disposals 6 times last season with his best 37 disposals .vs. Adelaide in round 6.

Cornes ranked 13th in disposals per game, 14th in handballs, 16th in handballs per game & 19th in disposals. Cornes would have to be seriously considered as an automatic inclusion if you have the cap room.

Danyle Pearce (midfield) $337,500 – After being elevated from the 2004 rookie draft, Pearce hasn’t looked back averaging 76.8 & racking up 30 disposals or more 3 times in 2009. Pearce has career highs of 35 disposals & 22 kicks .vs. Brisbane in round 14.

Pearce ranked 11th in inside 50s per game & 12th in inside 50s. Currently an estimated $17,000 bargain & a midfielder that gets you inside 50s has the footy a fair bit.

Warren Tredrea (forward) $336,200 – Arguably, Tredrea is the best valued forward in the competition. Averaging 76.5 in 2009, Tredrea is ranked 6th in goals contributed per game, 7th in goals contributed, 9th in goals & goals per game, 16th in goal assists & 18th in goal assists per game.

The best steal for the price range & there are plenty of them as we’ve discovered a pricing glitch.

Robbie Gray (forward) $321,200 – He was one of Jermayn’s favourites at one time last season averaging 73.1 in 2009 with career highs of 26 disposals & 14 handballs .vs. Nth Melbourne in round 22.

Gray ranked 6th in both goal assists & goal assists per game & is an estimated $11,000 bargain currently. Will Jermayn go around with him again?

Dean Brogan (ruck) $315,900 – Brogan is currently in my Supercoach team & averaged 71.9 in 2009 with career highs of 23 disposals .vs. Brisbane in round 21& 15 handalls .vs. Melbourne in round 3.

Brogan ranked 6th in hitouts & 9th in hitouts per game & is near the best Dreamteam ruck bargain there is currently estimated at a $17,900 bargain.

Troy Chaplin (defence) $312,000 – For a defender, Chaplin’s average of 71.6 in 2009 isn’t bad with a career high 15 marks .vs. Brisbane in round 14.

Chaplin also doesn’t mind a run down field contributing to inside 50s, assisting in goals & doesn’t mind the odd goal himself. A dashing, scoring defender is always handy & a cheap one is better.

Brett Ebert (forward) $283,400 – Ebert logically should be in the same boat as Westhoff (read below) but got 20 games in 2009 at an average of 64.5. Ebert did have career highs of 14 marks .vs. Brisbane in round 14& 5 tackles .vs. Richmond in round 8 showing he’s versatile in contrasting games.

Can be a very damaging forward when on song & would be the go to man after Tredrea.

Jacob Surjan (defence) $251,500 – Surjan averaged only 57.2, but he played all bar 1 game in the 2009 regular season with equal career highs of 15 handballs .vs. Melbourne & 13 kicks & 7 tackles .vs. Fremantle in round 11.

Surjan is nearing the form of 2006-07 & with a current estimated $2,900 discount, he could be that cheap defender ready to break out of a possession slump.

Alipate Carlisle (defence) $224,700 – At only 22 years of age, Carlisle averaged 51.1 in 2009 & had career highs of 21 disposals & 16 handballs .vs. Melbourne in round 3. Carlisle also had a career high 5 tackles .vs. Nth Melbourne that could indicate that he can play well when the chips are both up & down. Not even some of the best can do that so watch him over the 1st couple of rounds as he is currently estimated a $17,600 discount.

Best Risky Buys

Jason Davenport (midfield) $353,300 – Davenport played 10 good games last season at an average of 80.4 with his best being 26 disposals, 15 handballs, 8 marks & 2 goals .vs. West Coast in round 16.

Almost certain to get a game first up with the slight list clean out. Factor him in for a cheap midfielder.

Justin Westhoff (forward) $283,600 – Westhoff burst onto the scene halfway through 2008 as a spectacular skinny forward. Averaging 64.5 in 2009, Westhoff needs to recapture that formline if he gets a chance with only 13 games last season. Keep in the back of your mind & watch the selection table.

Matt Thomas (midfield) $283,000 – Thomas is another of those players in the price range at a good discount. He averaged 64.4 in 12 games with career highs of 25 disposals & 17 handballs .vs. Adelaide in round 6 & 10 marks .vs. Hawthorn in round 4.

Thomas looks a good in & under type player relying more on his handball, but can tackle as well. Thomas may be a small thought for a cheap midfielder.

Josh Carr (midfield) $264,700 – Well, most would say Carr’s career is nearing the end of the road, but at 60.2 in 12 games, Carr’s free kick count is good (16-8), had 45 tackles & is the older head when it comes to the in & under game. With a current estimation of a $20,100 saving, the only concern is if the selection team gives the older players a run.

Michael Pettigrew (defence) $216,000 – It’s hard to make a solid case after averaging 49.2 in 14 games & with an estimated $2,500 discount, but he had an equal career high of 12 kicks .vs. Western Bulldogs.

John Butcher (forward) $129,500 – I never normally endorse 1st year players, but when you’re an eye witness to see what this kid can do, take advantage of it. Butcher was outstanding in the local WGLFL Grand Final thriller with his strong leading & marking against men. I’m definitely taking him as the cheap 1st year forward.

Your Feedback

Will you be having any Port Adelaide Power players in your Dreamteam this year? Or will Dean Laidley moving to the Power have the same consequences that he had at the Kangaroos?

Born in Warragul, West Gippsland, Victoria. I’m married with 2 beautiful young girls & a cat (Hirdy). One is at school & the other has autism. I support Essendon but I’m not the one-eyed feral type. Played footy for 1 year in under 15s. Was roped in, actually, as my brother was in the team & they were short of players. Terrible team, mind you. Coach had his sons in the midlfield & they were dreadful. What I do?? Not a lot, unfortunately. Cutting a long story short, illness for 24 years this year (ended footy career) & Johnny’s “workplace” laws forced its hand even more. Love to work, but unfortunately part time is the go these days. Now, spend my time doing community radio sports show on Saturdays & wife suggested I build excel programs on sports leagues & other calculations. Enjoy my “twittering” that I recently discovered.
