2009 Round 1 DreamTeam Wrapup

Posted on 30 March 2009 by

Having only one game with their teams selected before the lockout was a bit harsh. Most coaches had players short and is not the ideal way to start along with the big name rookies not even picked to play.

On a personal note, my team was disappointing this week to say the least, but I’m looking for cash at this stage.

Michael Hurley (ESS) on debut scored well with 69. With a game against the hapless Dockers this weekend, & with a starting price of $134,600, I can see another good score this week.

On the other hand, Nth Melbourne’s Jack Ziebell was disappointing on debut. Can’t comment on the reasoning, but was it the case of the lower team dragging the better team to their level??

Lewis Roberts-Thompson (SYD) also had a good game with a score of 80 & was surprised not to see him in the best for the Swans. A $233,600 bargain that this weekend will face up to the Buddy/Roughead show at ANZ Stadium.

Leigh Harding played a brilliant game against Melbourne with a DreamTeam score of 150

It’s only the 1st week so I’ll give a lot of the $300,000+ players the benefit of the warm up.

Overall, Nth Melbourne’s Leigh Harding at $292,800 leads the way in my DreamTeam rankings. Here is how the rankings will work.

Meet craigeyles

Born in Warragul, West Gippsland, Victoria. I’m married with 2 beautiful young girls & a cat (Hirdy). One is at school & the other has autism. I support Essendon but I’m not the one-eyed feral type. Played footy for 1 year in under 15s. Was roped in, actually, as my brother was in the team & they were short of players. Terrible team, mind you. Coach had his sons in the midlfield & they were dreadful. What I do?? Not a lot, unfortunately. Cutting a long story short, illness for 24 years this year (ended footy career) & Johnny’s “workplace” laws forced its hand even more. Love to work, but unfortunately part time is the go these days. Now, spend my time doing community radio sports show on Saturdays & wife suggested I build excel programs on sports leagues & other calculations. Enjoy my “twittering” that I recently discovered.

I’m not sure I follow the formula decent lists though.

Yeh im also a bit confused on the formula Craig, bit more of an explanation including an example could be really helpful…

    Thanks :D

  3. Luke Says:

Add me to the list of people slightly confused.

Roberts-Thompson got a good score, but I’d still never consider buying him in a million years because he plays for Sydney and due to his history of less than impressive scores.

Harding wont be allowed to run free as he did for much longer. He was sensational, but he is just a player – and his run will come to an end sooner or later I would think.

As for the rankings, would you be suggesting the players in the Top 15 are potential “buys”? It will be interesting how the season progresses, as I still wouldn’t want several of those players in my side.

Great wrap-up – I look forward to more of this throughout the season!

    Cheers.

sorry, find it hard to explain in writing thanby speaking, so I’ll try again.
    Take Leigh Harding for example.
He scored 150 in round 1. Times that by .25 & you’ll round it off to 38.
I feel some players always start the season off on a flyer & gradually wear down by the latter rounds.

Let’s take Jimmy Bartel’s 2008 season. Last year, he played all 22 games. Every 5.5 games he plays, multiply his DT score by .25, then .5, .75 & 1. He would have scored 1631 last season.

Joel Corey played the same games & scored 1509. Corey had a better start to the season than his last games.
I hope this clears thing up, guys.

    thanks, Luke
I bought Roberts-Thompson for some quick cash & an 80 from him was pretty good.
Yes, Leigh Harding won’t be that good, but he was the best in round 1 so I guess that makes him the yearly leader.
The top 15 are the best of the year & the prices so far.

  6. deano Says:

this was my first attempt at dream team so i was pretty happy with the way things went. i found that some of my value buys in Morton, Higgins, Urquhart and Skipworth outperformed my ‘guns’ in Riewoldt,Harvey and Mackie. must say i am still a little confused about formula used above but that is sweet I plan to stick to my own theories anyway. just a quick question on trading, is it better to save them up for later or use them early??

    Jermayn Reply:

Yes Craig’s formula has created some confusion so with our dream team wrap ups, we will just leave out the results of the formula and just display his top 10/15..

This also is my first year of DreamTeam but im getting the hang of it after learning a few harsh realities last week, ie: make sure your emergencies are actually listed to play in case one of your starting 22 does not play. IE: I had Hayden Ballaynte as my forward emergency last week….

just a quick question on trading, is it better to save them up for later or use them early??

Yes I would say so unless you have someone who wont come back etc (ie: im getting rid of Liam Anthony for another rookie or my wife got rid of Croad). We only got 20 interchanges and towards the end is the rush.

  7. deano Says:

yeah, i traded Raines and also Scott Thompson who i didn’t reaslise was injured(lucky my emergency in Mitch Robinson had a cracker) for Gary Ablett Jnr. I thought little Gaz might drop off this year but he looks better then ever. i was hesitant because of his price but he really is worth it.

    Jermayn Reply:

Yeh I think Ablett, Cox and either Corey or Bartell is a must. At least you know you will get a minimum of 100 points a game..

  8. deano Says:

i thought Cox was a bit over priced and went for Ottens and saved a bit of cash for elsewhere. Paid off this week but it is a long season…

    Jermayn Reply:

Yeh thats why I went for Cox as he consistently scores high unlike Ottens who personally I think is over rated and Hawthorn does have a weak ruck division…

  9. Princess of the Cats Says:

I would have thought Daniel Rich wouldve gotten better than that – he played really well – that well my hubby had to tell me he was a Rookie

  10. craig eyles Says:

other rookies played better for their price tags, IMO. let’s see how Rich goes here in Vic.

  11. deano Says:

never count your chickens…Ottens gooone. Good to see Rich performed well again. Rich, Higgins and Skipworth would all have to be the steals of the season.
