More injuries to clubs has the question raised: is five weeks to long for a pre-season? Added to last weeks major injuries you have Brad Dick and Swans Thornton with knees and Brian Lake (aka Harris) with a hip injury. I would rather see my teams players get injured in the regular season rather than the pre-season competition.
If the AFL is serious about adding new clubs by 2012 they need to really think about this pre-season competition. Is it necessary? What do you think? Please add your views below.
Adelaide, Hawthorn, St Kilda and Essendon are still alive in the NAB cup and have hit form at the start of the year. Playing under limited interchanges may affect their longevity for the year which will be interesting to watch.
Dissection of St Kilda – St Kilda will only get better (After beating Geelong by 5 points) with Nick Riewoldt to add to the pace and tall timber in the ruck and forward line. Their backline is still thin.
Dissection of Hawthorn – Awesome forward line, however leading by 54 points at quarter time and then only winning by 34 points (Carlton) could be a worry. Hawks tend to go missing in games.
Dissection of Adelaide – Great coaching and planning for the future has seen them play their young midfielders in the midfield and left the old timers (McLeod, Edwards and Goodwin) out. Beat Fremantle by 17 points.
Dissection of Essendon – Essendon are not as bad as the last few years say they were. Quite simply the problem was Kevin Sheedy and his dictatorship over a club. No individual is bigger than the club (just ask West Coast). Essendon look like they are now enjoying their football which winning (beat Bulldogs by 54 points) helps.
Losers of NAB Round 2
- Fremantle lack skill and over focus on Pavlich, sounds like nothing has changed?
- Carlton still have a long way to go. Yes they have the best midfielder but Judd and Fev cannot score all the goals. Maybe getting rid of their only center half forward (Kennedy) was a mistake.
- Bulldogs, get a forward line and stop recruiting flankers and midfielders and then think about a premiership.
- Geelong will not be worried at all, they will be top 2 this year.
Results from NAB Challenge games
- Richmond defeated Melbourne by 35 points.
- North defeated Brisbane by 32 points.
- West Coast defeated Collingwood by 33 points.
- Sydney defeated Port by 69 points.

Another knee injury this time to promising key position player Mitch Brown for the Eagles, he injured his knee during the same game that Brad Dick did his.
Too many knee injuries already with Fremantle onballer Paul Hasleby, Adelaide ruckman Rhett Biglands, Sydney defender Nick Malceski and young teammate Kristen Thornton all needing reconstructions.
In other news Nick Malceski has had his reco using a new different technique called “ligament augmentation and reconstruction system” (LARS) and could be playing AFL again this year.
In other Kick2Kick and knee reconstruction news, we will be releasing a series of articles detailing what it is like to recover and return playing from a knee reconstruction.

RealFooty has a good article about knee injuries and highlights a good data image (below).
If you look at the last few years I would have to say that Knees are up. Which could be due to the drought in Australia as the grounds are a lot harder than normal.
