Sydney’s 2010 Dreamteam Preview

Posted on 16 March 2010 by

The big question for Sydney in 2010 is can they make the finals one more time for Paul Roos before he leaves & John Longmire takes over?? Yes, Roos is doing a Pim Verbeek & leaving the Swans at the end of 2010 with a list unlikely to make the finals any time soon.

The bookmakers have their chances pretty much right to win the flag & a draw that gives them a 40.9% chance of success.

The Swans list averaged 1052 per player at a cost of around $286,500.

Goodes has been named in the midfield & forward line this year. Will you use the dual position to your advantage?

Best Buys

Adam Goodes (midfield & Forward) $434,800 – The duel Brownlow medallist averaged 99.0 in 2009with his best game at 30 disposals & an equal career high 15 handballs .vs. Western Bulldogs in round 10.

Goodes was ranked 5th in inside 50s per game, 7th in inside 50s, 17th in goals contributed, 19th in goals & 20th in goal assists & Dreamteam scores per game.

Goodes is just under the elite salary & is an estimated $18,000 bargain. It’s amazing such a decorated player isn’t more expensive.

Ryan O’Keefe (forward) $425,400 – O’Keefe will arguably be the star of the Swans forward line averaging 96.8 in 2009 & amazingly racking up 30 or more disposals 3 times with a career high 41 disposals & an equal career high of 26 kicks .vs. Collingwood in round 12, 21 handballs .vs. Nth Melbourne in round 14 & 14 tackles .vs. Carlton in round 16.

O’Keefe ranked 12th in tackles per game & 13th in tackles & comes with an estimated $23,800 discount. What more could you want than a forward that gathers midfielders stats??

Jude Bolton (midfield) $414,200 – Bolton excelled himself in 2009 with a 94.3 average with career highs of 19 handballs .vs. Collingwood in round 12 & 13 tackles .vs. Fremantle in round 5.

The 2nd stat is important considering Bolton was ranked 3rd in tackles & tackles per game with tackles worth 4 points & comes with an estimated $17,200 discount.

Brett Kirk (midfield) $384,900 – Kirk is the inspirational player to watch year after year with no physical power or presence, just sheer hard work. Kirk averaged 84.3 in 2009& racked up 30 or more disposals 3 times with a career high 41 disposals & equal career high 19 kicks .vs. Collingwood in round 12. Kirk also had career highs of 25 handballs .vs. Nth Melbourne in round 14 & 14 tackles .vs. Richmond.

If we thought Bolton was impressive, Kirk ranked 1st in tackles & tackles per game & comes with an estimated $27,100 discount that says that the price makers believe he’s not going to have a good year.

Rhyce Shaw (defence) $378,500 – Many thought Shaw’s playing days were numbered, but getting out of Collingwood was the best thing he’s done averaging 86.1 in 2009 & racking up 30 or more disposals 3 times with an equal career high of 21 kicks .vs. Geelong in a losing 5 point thriller.

Shaw was ranked 4th in kicks & kicks per game & comes with an estimated $17,300 discount. The question is can Shaw keep away the 2nd year blues??

Martin Mattner (defence) $317,200 – The long kicking former Crow averaged 72.2 in 2009 with an ironic career high 30 disposals .vs. Adelaide in round 13. With an average of 16.5 disposals per game, Mattner could be classed as a risk with an estimated $47,000 discount, but he could also be a hidden gem.

Daniel Bradshaw (forward) $310,100 – Bradshaw was brought in partly because he was upset at the Lions getting Fevola & because the Swans need a forward focal point without Hall or O’Laughlin there.

Bradshaw averaged 70.6 in 2009 & was ranked 5th in goals, 6th in goals per game, 9th in goals contributed per game & 10th in goals contributed.

Bradshaw’s probably grinning with the problems Fev has on his plate & you too could be grinning with an estimated $10,500 discount.

Risky Bargain Buys

Heath Grundy (defence) $287,400 – Grundy played all 22 games with a 65.4 average. But, 2009 was marked with career highs in all bar the goals category. It seems Grundy is enjoying his time in defence rather than being the forward where he started & is an estimated $45,500 discount. Grundy’s a cheap defender that plays every game & could be on a second wind of his career.

Lewis Roberts-Thompson (defence) $285,000 – Is “LRT” one of those players that you fear getting the footy, but somehow gets the job done?? LRT Averaged 64.9 in 2009 with career highs of 25 disposals & 15 handballs .vs. Richmond in round 6, 14 kicks .vs. St Kilda in round 14 & 12 hitouts .vs. Brisbane in round 22.

Yes, he is going to be used in the ruck in 2010 & with an estimated $37,000 discount, his points could rise if in the midfield.

Craig Bolton (defence) $272,900 – Bolton didn’t have the year much like Jude, but he did have the tasks on some big forwards that dropped his average to 62.1 in 2009 with a career high 13 handballs .vs. Port Adelaide. With an estimated $37,800 discount, hopefully Bolton can be freed up a bit to gain some points.

Kieren Jack (midfield) $272,400 – Son of a rugby player, Jack averaged 62.0 in 2009 with career highs of 22 disposals & 17 handballs .vs. Adelaide in round 13.

Jack comes with an estimated $51,100 & played all 22 games in 2009 & hopefully he can go back to the levels that made him a great Swan story.

Paul Bevan (defence) $270,100 – Bevan averaged 61.5 from 19 games with an equal career high 12 handballs .vs. St Kilda in round 1. Didn’t look impressive in the NAB Cup, but with a $27,200 estimated discount, could he be worth a punt as a cheap defender that does play forward??

Sydney Top 10 2009

  1. Adam Goodes (midfield) $434,800
  2. Ryan O’Keefe (forward) $425,400
  3. Jude Bolton (midfield) $414,200

Born in Warragul, West Gippsland, Victoria. I’m married with 2 beautiful young girls & a cat (Hirdy). One is at school & the other has autism. I support Essendon but I’m not the one-eyed feral type. Played footy for 1 year in under 15s. Was roped in, actually, as my brother was in the team & they were short of players. Terrible team, mind you. Coach had his sons in the midlfield & they were dreadful. What I do?? Not a lot, unfortunately. Cutting a long story short, illness for 24 years this year (ended footy career) & Johnny’s “workplace” laws forced its hand even more. Love to work, but unfortunately part time is the go these days. Now, spend my time doing community radio sports show on Saturdays & wife suggested I build excel programs on sports leagues & other calculations. Enjoy my “twittering” that I recently discovered.

  1. Jermayn Says:

    Im undecided on Goodes…
He costs a pretty penny but he always get free kicks and looks to be kicking more goals this year as he plays more forward.

Jetta also looks ok, but with I will go for the Freo rookie as he gets more of the ball and is the same price.

Dennis-Lane has not done much either, so im ditching him for Hitchcook from PA.

Have enough room in my cap for both Jetta & Morabito for Freo. Saw Gary Rohan & he looks a starter. Took him as well.

    Jermayn Reply:

But how much of a game will Rohan get? He looks a player tough.
