Hawthorn won by 20 odd points which for many was a surprise but with four years in planning their time was due. Hawks won the game but the Geelongs forward line kicked the game away with their poor goal kicking.

First round down and 21 to go. Highlights of the round was Judd coming back successfully but without a win and some close games with one new coach winning his first game.
