Inside everyone’s mind that plays DreamTeam, they all have an idea on who makes the “perfect” selection for their teams. Sometimes we’re right, sometimes we get it drastically wrong, but everybody doesn’t have the exact solution, myself included.

But, to give the fans out there some sort of different insight, I’ve spent some time compiling a list of the best “pound for pound” players in the AFL. This list did not include rookie listed players.

What didn’t surprise me was the shortage of real talent there is in this competition. Of the best in each weight class, only 44 players are better than the average score for that position. That doesn’t include the best backs (18) & ruckmen (7) that we had to include, even though they didn’t win a weight class.

So, all up, 69 professional AFL footballers can theoretically fit the current bill as champions of the game, even though there’s some great up and comers in the future we can see. What this says for the future expansion into 18 teams is quite obvious.

Another huge surprise was the lack of power forwards or forwards of any note. These days, it seems teams are relying more on the midfield or mid size goal kickers.

The lists were compiled as such.

  1. Each player was put in their weight category which was:
    • 154-160 pds
    • 161-168 pds
    • 169-175 pds
    • 176-200 pds
    • 201+ pds
  2. For that weight group, each player was put in their position & their stats were put into 3 groups:
    • DreamTeam score
    • price
    • weight
  3. Each group of 2 a,b & c were given an average.
  4. The winner of each weight class was the position with the best DreamTeam average. For example:
    • 176-200 pound class
    • Backs 63 DT average
    • Midfield 79
    • Rucks 70
    • Forwards 68

Therefore, the midfield would win the weight class. Backs were determined on best weight class as they didn’t win a class outright.

Before we get to the players, here are the results in DreamTeam averages.

154-160 pounds

  • Backs NA
  • Midfield 64
  • Rucks NA
  • Forwards 64

161-168 pounds (midfield won by 0.5)

  • Backs 59
  • Midfield 66
  • Rucks NA
  • Forwards 66

169-175 pounds

  • Backs 63
  • Midfield 72
  • Rucks NA
  • Forwards 70

176-200 pds

  • Backs 63
  • Midfield 79
  • Rucks 70
  • Forwards 68

201+ pounds

  • Backs 63
  • Midfield 72
  • Rucks 61
  • Forwards 67

Here’s the list of midfielders 176-200 pounds that passed the test with their DreamTeam averages.

To make the cut, this list of 37 out of the 135 players had to:

  1. Average 79 DreamTeam points
  2. Minimum $311,900
  3. Weigh over the average 186 pounds.
Ablett (Gee) 120.5 Bruce (Melb) 92.8

  • Wells (Nth Melb) 79.5
  • Collins (Rich) 77.9

Midfield 201+ pounds

  • Richardson (Rich) 89.0

We were forced to include the best backs & ruckmen even though there stocks are pretty thin, especially the rucks.

Best backs (176-200 pounds)

Duffield (Fre) 94.2 McPhee (Ess) 79.8
Bowden (Rich) 92.9 Ryder (Ess) 77.1
Enright (Gee) 88.7 McMahon (Nth Melb) 76.1
Embley (WCE) 84.3 Mattner (Syd) 72.9
Mundy (Fre) 83.8 MacDonald (Bris) 71.8
Houlihan (Carl) 83.4 Lovett-Murray (Ess) 71.4
Drummond (Bris) 82.5 Pratt (Nth Melb) 70.7
Mackie (Gee) 82.4 C. Bolton (Syd) 68
Gram (StK) 80.2 Guerra (Haw) 67.1

Best rucks (201+ pounds) as there was only one ruckman in the 176-200 pds.

  • Cox (WCE) 110.9
  • McIntosh (Nth Melb) 97
  • Sandilands (Fre) 93.6
  • Petrie (Nth Melb) 89.1
  • Jolly (Syd) 86.8
  • Johnson (Melb) 74.0
  • Ottens (Gee) 65.5

The best forwards came from the 169-175 pounds class, but none passed the 3 averages.

What do you think of this list & are who do you think should’ve made it/not made it?? Any other questions or explanation needed, fire away.

Meet craigeyles

Born in Warragul, West Gippsland, Victoria. I’m married with 2 beautiful young girls & a cat (Hirdy). One is at school & the other has autism. I support Essendon but I’m not the one-eyed feral type. Played footy for 1 year in under 15s. Was roped in, actually, as my brother was in the team & they were short of players. Terrible team, mind you. Coach had his sons in the midlfield & they were dreadful. What I do?? Not a lot, unfortunately. Cutting a long story short, illness for 24 years this year (ended footy career) & Johnny’s “workplace” laws forced its hand even more. Love to work, but unfortunately part time is the go these days. Now, spend my time doing community radio sports show on Saturdays & wife suggested I build excel programs on sports leagues & other calculations. Enjoy my “twittering” that I recently discovered.

Have to be honest that this took a few reads to fully get my head around it. Think a post like this would be awesome at the start of the year for the players who have played at least one season.

There are some names in the list that I would have never thought of placing in my Dream Team..
