Chris Masten had an injury troubled 08 but he showed enough promise on why he was picked at #3 last year.

Chris Masten had an injury troubled 08 but he showed enough promise on why he was picked at #3 in the 2007 draft.

Year It Was

  • Finished: 11th with 8 wins and 93.30%
  • Kick2Kick Season Prediction: 14th to 10th

What Went Right

The future of West Coasts midfield is alive after having the best in 2005-2007 and then having the worst after personnel left the club.

Ebert, Masten, Swift, Nit Nat, Scott Selwood, McGinnity & Rosa all showed enough that when you add Priddas, Embley, Kerr & Cox, they will again have a midfield to build the side on.

Almost all positions on the field have capable players who got games into them and the whole club would have gained confidence in their  four wins out of the last five games.

What Went Wrong

Injuries to key senior players in Daniel Kerr, Beau Waters, Brent Staker & Dean Cox who all struggled to play a season between them, the upside was that the youngsters stepped up especially in the last half of the season.

The other big worry was the fact that the Eagles could not win away games, several games where lost by a quarter or ten minutes of bad play. They ended up winning a big away game against the Bulldogs to just miss out on the all time loosing away games record currently held by Sydney from the early 90s.

Player(s) that Stepped Up

Mark LeCras stepped up from a promising player to a star where he should win All Australian along with Josh Kennedy who stamped himself as a 10 year old  CHF for West Coast.

Trade Bait/ Goodbye’s

David Wirrapanda, Chad Fletcher & Adam Hunter have already said goodbye along with Brent Staker & Mark Seaby asking to be traded. Along with these 5 going, others who also could be traded or delisted are:

  • Sam Butler – Had a better second half of the season playing in defense.
  • Ashley Hansen - Has kicked several bags in the WAFL league and could be a target for several clubs looking for KPP forwards.
  • Jamie McNamara - Would be lucky to get a contract extension.
  • Mark Nicoski – Injuries have not been lucky to him but Hurn and others has meant he is down the pecking order for running defenders.
  • Matthew Spangher – Could be a carrot for some clubs looking for KPP backmen.
  • Tyson Stenglein – A defensive midfielder/ tagger who has been over taken with the promising year by Butler, McGinnity etc

Improvement Needed by

Tony Notte played two games last year but has not done enough in the seconds this year. If Butler, Hansen, McNamara, Nicoski, Stenglein & Brendon Jones stay on the list, they must step up to get into the starting 22 to save her careers.

Some promising signs for the Eagles with some real talent in the midfield.
Can’t wait to see how nit nat develops.
Definitely think winning games on the road is the Achilles heel for the WCE.
They did beat the Bulldogs quite convincingly though.

i hardly think they beat the bulldogs convincingly on the road.

however in saying that they did do alot better than most expected. i think next year will give us a better idea on how they are developing

trade week for the eagles will probably be quite interesting.

@Mike – maybe the win was not convincing but the first half was and their attitude was.

Agree that next year will give us a better view if they have improved or the last month was just a fluke. I’ld like to remind you guys of Hawthorn in the season 2006 where they won the last 4 games, finished a few games outside the 8 and two years later they won the GF.

If the Eagles can get top 20-30 picks or a good young pacey midfielder/ forward player for Staker & Seaby it will help a lot.

yes for sure they were very good in the first half and so was their attitude. do you think the game may have been dramatically different if the dogs hadn’t been so inaccurate? i just wonder if the eagles would have crumbled had the dogs been more accurate

maybe the dogs should be interested in Hansen and maybe offload Griffen to the West?

  5. Jermayn Says:

@Deano, if you read my comment I said that the first half was convincing by the Eagles and their attitude was a lot more convincing than the Dogs all day.
