This was probably the most boring week off all previous trade weeks with clubs over pricing players (Warnock and Seaby worth first round picks??).
O'Keefe did not get traded, so does he now remain a Swan or go into the Pre Season Draft?

Trade Week can be a time for clubs to fill gaps in their list and although 2007 saw 20 trades, 2008 was a non event. Why? These days clubs much prefer to fill in the gaps of their list by the National Draft instead of reclyced players especially with Hawthorn wining the 2008 premiership through high draft picks.

2008 Club Trades

Adelaide, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne & West Coast did not partake in the 2008 trade period.

Brisbane:
GAINED: draft pick 93
LOST: Anthony Corrie

Carlton:
GAINED: Robert Warnock & draft pick 69
LOST: draft picks 24, 56 & 72

Collingwood:
GAINED: Anthony Corrie & draft pick 46
LOST: Rhyce Shaw & draft pickS 61 & 93

Essendon:
GAINED: Brent Prismall
LOST: draft pick 39

Fremantle:
GAINED: draft pickS 24, 56 & 72
LOST: Robert Warnock and draft pick 69

Geelong:
GAINED: draft pick 39
LOST: Brent Prismall

Port Adelaide:
GAINED: draft pick 42
LOST: Adam Thomson

Richmond:
GAINED: Adam Thomson
LOST: draft pick 42

St Kilda
GAINED: Farren Ray & draft pick 48
LOST: draft pick 31

Sydney Swans
GAINED: Rhyce Shaw & draft pick 61
LOST: draft pick 46

Western Bulldogs
GAINED: draft pick 31
LOST: Farren Ray

imo the winners of this trade week are:

  • Essendon: Although Prismall will miss alot of 2009, he is a quality midfielder who will add class, experience and it only cost them a 3rd round pick.
  • Collingwood: Swapped Shaw for a similar styled player in Corrie and gained pick 46.
  • Western Bulldogs: Received pick 31 for a hack in Ray who was not even a regular player for the Dogs.

Room for an AFL Free Agency?

Gale the boss of the AFLPA has been pushing a Free Agency program for a few years and I would have to say that with this years farce of a players trade, he may have a point.

I however have not seen a good suggestion for the rules yet. IF a free agency comes in, you would want it to be far were the club who has put five odd years development and the player is not disadvantage in anyway.

What I find strange is when a player wants to leave (Judd and Warnock for example) they nominate a club. Is this NOT already like a Free Agency? Why does it need to be changed? Is it because players like Green, Lovett, Seaby and O’Keefe missed out this year to switch clubs?

Are you happy with your clubs trades?

So are you happy with the trades your club did? Did they met what your club needed? Who do you wish they picked up? and do you think we now have room for a free agency and if so, what should the rules be?

Surprised to see a huge amount of tall key position players in Seaby, Warnock, McIntosh, Boyle, Hansen and Dawson etc all offered up and we only saw Warnock get picked up.

I personally think the Dogs did the right thing by not picking up Hall, Boyle or Hansen and sticking by the three key position players they have drafted by father & son this year and the two last year. Smart move imo…
